The HP1800 is a PWM phase-doubler that helps drive a described single-stage 48 V-to-ultra-low-voltage power topology. It turns one tri-state PWM input into four complementary outputs for two phases interleaved by 180 degrees. It is not a complete converter or the controller: the power stage, controller, drivers, switching devices and magnetic components are still required.
What the HP1800 does in a 48 V power system
In a conventional processor power path, an intermediate bus converter first reduces 48 V to 12 V; a multiphase buck point-of-load converter then steps 12 V down to the processor’s core voltage. Hynetek describes an alternative that removes the intermediate 12 V conversion stage: a single-stage half-bridge current-doubler rectifier (HBCD) converts the 48 V input directly to a low output voltage.
The HP1800 supplies signal logic for that arrangement. Its input is one tri-state PWM signal from an external multiphase controller; its four complementary outputs form two phases offset by 180 degrees. Hynetek says this arrangement can allow a controller used in a conventional second-stage design to drive the new topology without extra PWM channels. That does not mean the HP1800 performs the conversion itself or replaces the controller.
What else the topology needs
A functioning design still needs an external controller, gate drivers, switching devices, magnetic components and the supporting power circuitry. In Hynetek’s typical circuit, the HP1800 outputs drive an HP3010 half-bridge driver, rated by the manufacturer at 120 V/3 A, and an HP3000 dual-channel low-side driver, rated at 30 V/5 A. Those are parts of the example implementation, not components integrated into the HP1800.

Hynetek describes ultra-low output applications spanning 0.6 V to 3.3 V and illustrates a 48 V-to-1.0 V application. The actual output capability, load current, transient performance and suitability for a particular processor depend on the complete circuit and its design; the stated voltage range alone does not establish those capabilities.

How to interpret the efficiency and size claims
Hynetek’s 2026 article reports 90–92% peak efficiency at an operating point for single-stage conversion, approximately 86% typical end-to-end efficiency for the conventional two-stage path after distribution and parasitic losses, up to roughly 75% less active conversion area, and around 40% fewer components. The company does not provide a reproducible test setup, measured curves, load conditions or independent verification in the reviewed material. These are architecture-comparison claims, not guaranteed HP1800 performance or proof of results for a particular board.

A separate Hynetek article from 2025 described the two-stage path as approximately 87% efficient and single-stage efficiency as typically exceeding 90%. The differing rounded two-stage estimates—about 87% in 2025 and about 86% in 2026—should not be combined into a more precise figure. Neither source, on its own, establishes matched performance for a specific implementation.

What to compare before choosing an architecture
The single-stage approach may remove a conversion stage, but whether that helps a given system is an engineering question rather than a conclusion established by the published comparisons. Evaluate the complete design against the conventional path under comparable conditions:
- Measure 48 V-to-load efficiency across the intended input, load and operating range—not just at a peak operating point.
- Check output voltage, load-current capability and transient response against the processor’s requirements.
- Account for distribution losses, magnetic and other component count, and active board area in the actual layout.
- Confirm that the controller can provide the required tri-state PWM behavior and that its PWM-channel arrangement suits the phase-doubler topology.
- Evaluate switching frequency alongside thermal behavior, electromagnetic interference and the selected power-stage components.
- Review fault handling, protection, design complexity and the availability of validated reference designs for the intended implementation.
The published material does not provide matched, independent measurements across these factors. Resolve them with application-specific design work and validation rather than assuming the reported architecture-level benefits will carry over unchanged.

Bottom line
The HP1800 is a signal-logic enabler for a particular way to build a direct 48 V-to-low-voltage power path: it converts one tri-state PWM input into four outputs for two interleaved phases. It can help an existing multiphase controller support Hynetek’s described HBCD topology without adding PWM channels, but it is neither a complete converter nor evidence by itself that a finished design will meet efficiency, thermal, transient or protection targets.
