Check an HP printer’s remaining ink from the HP app, the printer’s own control panel, or your computer’s printer settings. Windows users can open HP Printer Assistant and select Estimated Levels; macOS users can open Printers & Scanners > Options & Supplies > Supply Levels. HP Ink Tank and Smart Tank owners should read the transparent reservoir windows and keep ink between the marked minimum and maximum lines. These readings are estimates, so use print quality and the printer’s depleted-cartridge message—not the percentage alone—to decide when to replace a cartridge.
The best method depends on what your printer and device support. A control panel may identify a low color without showing a percentage, while the HP app can show separate estimated supplies after it connects to the printer. Computer utilities may expose information that is not visible on the printer itself, but their menus depend on the installed driver. First identify your exact HP model, then use the method available for that model rather than assuming every HP printer has the same screens.

These methods are alternatives, not competing products. Use the control panel when you are standing at the printer, the HP app when you need a phone or computer view, Windows or macOS tools when the printer is already installed there, and the reservoir windows for tank models. None of the electronic methods should be treated as a laboratory measurement of the ink left inside a cartridge.
Before you check: identify the printer and supply type
Write down the printer’s full model name before troubleshooting or buying supplies. HP sells many closely related models, and the correct cartridge family can differ even when two printers look similar. The model name appears on the printer body, its setup documentation, or the printer queue on your computer. If you are replacing a cartridge, also note the cartridge number printed on the old cartridge or listed in the printer’s documentation.
Distinguish a conventional cartridge printer from an HP Ink Tank or Smart Tank model. Cartridge printers generally report an electronic estimate, while tank models have transparent windows with minimum and maximum fill marks. A laser printer uses toner rather than ink; this guide is focused on HP inkjet printers and tank systems, so follow the toner procedure for a laser model instead.

Many HP inkjet printers show an approximate level on their front panel. Turn on the printer and look for an ink-drop or cartridge symbol on the home or status screen. On other models, open a menu labelled Ink Levels, Estimated Ink Levels, or a similar supplies option. A color display may show separate bars for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges.
There is no universal button sequence: touchscreen layouts, arrow-key menus, and available indicators vary by model. If you cannot find a supplies screen, use the HP app or the computer method below rather than applying instructions from a different HP model. A control-panel warning may identify the color that is low even when the printer does not show a percentage.
Some panels display a generic supplies or toner indicator instead of individual colors. Read the accompanying message carefully and note whether it says low, empty, or a cartridge problem. A low indicator is a planning warning; an empty or depleted message is a stronger replacement signal. If the panel shows no level at all, that is a limitation of the model or its current configuration, not proof that the cartridge is empty.
Use the HP app on a phone or computer
Steps
- Open the current HP app and select your printer, or choose it from the app’s printer list.
- Look beside the printer image for Estimated supply levels.
- Wait a few minutes if the levels do not appear immediately; HP says the app may need time to retrieve the readings.
- Record which color is low before ordering supplies.
The printer must be the one you intend to check, rather than another HP device saved in the app. Keep the printer powered on while the app retrieves its status. If several printers are listed, open each printer’s details and confirm the model name before acting on a low reading.
HP is moving features from HP Smart and myHP into the HP app. The exact screens and available features depend on your operating system, printer, configuration, and region, as explained in HP’s HP app guidance. If the app cannot find the printer or never displays supplies, check the printer through its panel or the operating-system tools instead.

Older instructions may still call the application HP Smart or myHP. The current name is HP app, but a device may continue to show an older application during the transition. Do not install software from an unofficial driver site simply because a menu is missing; use HP’s current setup and support route for your model.
See estimated levels in Windows
HP Printer Assistant
- In Windows Search, enter the exact printer name.
- Open HP Printer Assistant for that printer.
- Choose Estimated Levels in the top menu.
- Read the separate black and color estimates, if your model reports them.
Some installations do not include HP Printer Assistant or its level screen. HP’s setup instructions refer to HP Easy Start and selecting Full Software and Drivers when the complete feature set is needed. Use HP’s official setup route for your model rather than a third-party driver site. If Estimated Levels remains absent, use the HP app or the printer control panel.
What a missing Windows reading means
A missing estimate does not prove that the cartridge is empty. It can mean that the installed driver does not expose supply information, the printer is offline, or the model reports levels only on its own panel. Print a test page only when you need to judge quality; it consumes some ink and does not make the estimate more precise.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows may show more than one queue for the same physical printer. Open the queue created for the HP model, not a generic entry, when searching for HP Printer Assistant. If the assistant is present but has no Estimated Levels item, HP does not promise that every model and installation will provide it; switch to the app or the panel rather than repeatedly reinstalling unrelated drivers.
Check levels on macOS
- Press Command-Space to open Spotlight and search for Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP printer in the list.
- Click Options & Supplies.
- Open the Supply Levels tab.
macOS displays the levels reported by the printer and its driver. If the tab is missing, confirm that you selected the actual HP printer queue rather than a generic or duplicate queue, then check the HP app or the printer’s own display. HP identifies these as estimated values, not a measured volume.
The labels can look slightly different in localized versions of macOS or HP software, but the path remains the same in principle: select the installed HP printer, open its options or supplies information, and look for the supply-level tab. A missing tab is not an empty-cartridge warning. It simply means that this queue, driver, or model is not reporting levels through that screen.
Read the reservoir on an HP Ink Tank or Smart Tank
- Locate the transparent ink windows on the printer’s tank assembly.
- Check each color separately under good lighting.
- Keep every level between that tank’s marked minimum and maximum lines.
- Follow the fill procedure for your exact model if a tank reaches the minimum mark; do not assume bottles or filling steps are interchangeable between models.
Ink below the minimum can lead to poor print quality. Unlike cartridge estimates, the window gives you a direct visual indication of the reservoir, but it still does not tell you how many pages remain because page coverage varies.
Check all colors rather than looking only at the tank that appears lowest. A document with heavy color coverage can consume one color much faster than the others. Keep the ink within the marked range: filling above the maximum or using a procedure from another tank model can create a separate maintenance problem. HP’s general level guide does not replace the model-specific filling instructions supplied for your printer.

Understand what “low” really means
HP calls its ink indicators estimates for planning purposes. As HP states in its Ink Alert or Low on Ink guidance, “Ink level warnings and indicators are estimates provided for planning purposes.” A displayed percentage is therefore not an exact measurement of remaining milliliters or guaranteed pages.
A low alert does not automatically require you to stop. If text and images still look acceptable, you can normally clear the alert and continue printing until the cartridge is depleted or quality is no longer acceptable. Near empty, some printers enter a backup mode and the appearance of a print may change—for example, colors can look less accurate or black areas may become lighter.
Level messages are calibrated for genuine HP cartridges. Refilled or remanufactured cartridges may show inaccurate readings, continue to report an old level, or trigger a warning even when ink is present. Judge those cartridges primarily by the printer’s message and the actual page output.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not convert a displayed percentage into a fixed page count. A page with a small amount of black text uses much less ink than a full-page photo, a chart with large color areas, or repeated cleaning and alignment cycles. The same percentage can therefore support very different amounts of future printing. The estimate is useful for deciding whether to keep a replacement nearby, not for promising that a particular job will finish.
Decide when to replace a cartridge
- Identify the color. Use the panel, app, or computer estimate to see whether black or a particular color is low.
- Check a recent page. Look for missing lines, streaks, faded areas, incorrect colors, or a depleted-cartridge message.
- Continue if quality is acceptable. A low estimate alone is a planning signal, not proof that printing must stop immediately.
- Replace when depleted or unacceptable. Install a cartridge when the printer reports it empty or the output no longer meets your needs.
- Match the exact model. Read the printer’s full model number and the cartridge number printed on the old cartridge or listed in the printer documentation before purchasing replacement ink.
Do not order a generic “HP cartridge” solely because it is branded for HP. Cartridge families differ by printer model, region, and sometimes by the printer’s sales bundle. The safe description is replacement ink cartridges compatible with your exact printer model.
HP recommends having replacement supplies available when ink is low, but that does not mean replacing every cartridge as soon as its bar drops below full. A sensible point to buy is when the warning appears and you know an important print job is approaching. Confirm the color and cartridge number before checkout; broad searches such as “HP printer ink cartridges” are only a starting point, not a compatibility check.
Troubleshoot missing, frozen, or implausible levels
The app shows no supplies
- Give the app several minutes to retrieve the estimate.
- Confirm that the selected printer is the one currently connected and powered on.
- Try the printer control panel or your operating system’s supply screen.
- Check HP’s current app instructions because labels and feature availability can change by platform and region.
If the app lists multiple devices, open the printer image and verify its model before deciding that a reading is missing. The app may also display the printer while waiting for supply data; waiting briefly and then checking a second method prevents mistaking a delayed reading for an empty cartridge.
Windows does not show Estimated Levels
- Search again for the printer’s exact name and open its HP Printer Assistant.
- If the assistant is not installed, use HP Easy Start and the Full Software and Drivers option from HP’s official setup route.
- If the menu still does not exist, use the app or control panel; HP does not expose every feature on every model.
Do not use the absence of Estimated Levels as evidence that the cartridge has failed. It is a software-availability issue until another method confirms the supply condition.

macOS has no Supply Levels tab
- Open Printers & Scanners and select the intended HP queue.
- Reopen Options & Supplies and look for Supply Levels.
- If it remains unavailable, rely on the printer panel or HP app rather than treating the missing tab as an empty-cartridge warning.
The estimate conflicts with the printed page
Use the page quality and the printer’s depleted message as the immediate decision signals. Estimates can lag after a cartridge change, and they are especially unreliable for refilled or remanufactured cartridges. If a new, correctly matched cartridge still produces poor output, follow the cleaning or alignment procedure in that model’s manual instead of repeatedly replacing cartridges.
Look for the specific symptom: a missing color, streaks, faded areas, or incorrect density. A level bar that looks healthy does not guarantee acceptable output, and a low bar does not guarantee that output has already failed. The practical replacement test is whether the printer reports depletion or the page no longer meets your needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan supplies without wasting ink
Check levels before a long print job, but do not replace every cartridge as soon as its bar drops below full. Keep a compatible replacement available when a color is low, particularly if you print forms, photos, or other work that cannot be interrupted. Because page coverage differs dramatically, neither an on-screen percentage nor a tank window can promise a fixed page count.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the estimate after substantial printing and before travel, school submissions, invoices, or photo projects. Planning this way lets you obtain the correct cartridge without discarding usable ink. If a low warning appears while quality remains acceptable, finish a short job if necessary, then replace the cartridge before the printer reaches its depleted state.
Keep the printer’s exact model and cartridge number together in your records. That small check prevents ordering an incompatible color or cartridge family when the low warning finally becomes a depleted-cartridge message.
What these readings cannot tell you
- They do not provide an exact remaining volume.
- They do not guarantee a specific number of pages.
- They do not ensure that a low cartridge will produce identical color or density until empty.
- They may be inaccurate after refilling or with remanufactured supplies.
- They do not eliminate the need to verify cartridge compatibility by printer model.
- They do not make a missing software menu equivalent to an empty cartridge.
For model-specific labels, current app availability, and HP’s supported procedures, consult HP’s level-checking instructions and the support page for your exact printer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the quickest way to check ink in an HP printer?
Open the HP app, select the printer, and look beside its image for Estimated supply levels. If the app is unavailable, check the printer’s control panel for an ink-drop or cartridge icon or an Ink Levels menu.
Why does my HP app not show ink levels immediately?
HP says the app may take a few minutes to retrieve readings. Keep the intended printer powered on, confirm that it is selected in the app, and try the printer panel or computer settings if no estimate appears.

How do I check HP ink levels in Windows 11 or another Windows version?
Search Windows for the printer’s exact name, open HP Printer Assistant, and select Estimated Levels. If that option is missing, use the HP app or the printer control panel; not every model and installation exposes the Windows screen.
Where are HP ink levels on a Mac?
Open Spotlight with Command-Space, search for Printers & Scanners, select the HP printer, click Options & Supplies, and open Supply Levels. The tab may be unavailable for some queues or drivers.
How do I check ink in an HP Smart Tank or Ink Tank printer?
Read each transparent reservoir window and keep the ink between its marked minimum and maximum lines. Follow the filling instructions for the exact model if a tank reaches the minimum mark.

Does a low-ink warning mean I must replace the cartridge immediately?
No. HP describes indicators as estimates for planning. If print quality remains acceptable, you can generally clear the warning and continue until the cartridge is depleted or the output is no longer acceptable.
Can I keep printing with a nearly empty HP cartridge?
Sometimes. A printer may enter a backup mode as ink runs out, and print appearance can change. Replace the cartridge when the printer reports it depleted or when you see unacceptable fading, streaks, missing lines, or incorrect colors.
Why is my refilled or remanufactured cartridge showing the wrong level?
HP’s level messages are calibrated for genuine HP cartridges. Refilled and remanufactured cartridges can retain an old reading or trigger a warning despite containing ink, so judge them by the printer message and actual page quality.
How do I know which replacement cartridge to buy?
Verify the printer’s full model number and the cartridge number on the old cartridge or in the printer documentation. Buy replacement ink explicitly listed as compatible with that exact model rather than a generic HP cartridge.

The Bottom Line
Use the HP app, your printer’s control panel, Windows HP Printer Assistant, macOS Supply Levels, or the visible tank windows—whichever your model supports. Treat every electronic reading as an estimate, keep tank ink between its marks, and replace a cartridge when it is depleted or print quality is no longer acceptable. Always match the replacement to the exact HP printer model and cartridge number.
