There is no universal winner. The MacBook Neo is the simpler choice if you want a compact 13-inch macOS laptop, Apple’s iPhone integration and a clearly defined configuration. An HP OmniBook 3 can be better for Windows software, a 14- or 16-inch workspace, USB-A and HDMI ports, or a particular processor, display and price combination. Because “OmniBook 3” names a family rather than one specification, identify the exact HP SKU before comparing performance, battery life or price.
Quick verdict
Choose the MacBook Neo when you value a small computer, macOS, a 13-inch high-resolution display, predictable 8GB/256GB or 512GB configurations and Apple-device integration. Choose an HP OmniBook 3 when you need Windows, a larger 14- or 16-inch screen, legacy USB-A accessories, HDMI, or a specific HP configuration that offers the right balance of memory, storage and cost.
This is a fit-based comparison, not a claim that one product is faster or better for every buyer. HP sells OmniBook 3 machines in multiple sizes, processor families and markets. A 16-inch model with one processor and an entry-level 14-inch model may behave very differently.

- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
These records demonstrate variation; they do not establish that every OmniBook 3 sold in your country has the same CPU, screen, ports or release date. Before you shop, record the complete SKU from the retailer or HP product page and verify:
- Screen size, resolution, panel type, brightness and refresh rate.
- Processor model, memory capacity and whether memory is upgradeable.
- SSD capacity and whether it is replaceable.
- Battery capacity, charger rating and regional warranty.
- Every port, including the HDMI version and USB-C capabilities.
- Weight and dimensions for the exact configuration.
Retail listings can shorten a model name, omit a suffix or combine photographs from another configuration. Copy the product number and search that identifier on HP’s regional site. If the retailer and HP page disagree on memory, display or ports, treat the discrepancy as unresolved until the seller confirms the shipped unit.
MacBook Neo specifications at a glance
Apple’s UK technical listing identifies MacBook Neo as a 2026 model with an A18 Pro chip, 8GB unified memory and a 256GB or 512GB SSD. The chip has a six-core CPU—two performance cores and four efficiency cores—a five-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine.

| Specification | MacBook Neo |
|---|---|
| Display | 13-inch LED-backlit IPS; 2408×1506; 219 ppi; 500 nits; one billion colours; sRGB |
| Memory | 8GB unified memory |
| Storage | 256GB or 512GB SSD |
| Processor | Apple A18 Pro; six-core CPU, five-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine |
| Battery claim | Up to 11 hours wireless web or 16 hours video streaming |
| Ports | One USB-C USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s, charging and DisplayPort), one USB-C USB 2 (up to 480Mb/s, charging), 3.5mm headphone jack |
| External display | One display up to native 4K at 60Hz while the built-in screen runs at full resolution |
The two USB-C ports are not equivalent. The USB 3 port is the one specified for DisplayPort and reaches up to 10Gb/s; the USB 2 port is limited to 480Mb/s. If you routinely connect a monitor, fast external SSD, camera card reader and wired accessories together, budget for a hub or dock and check which port you use.
The fixed 8GB memory figure makes the purchase decision clearer but also less flexible. You cannot choose a higher-memory Neo configuration in Apple’s listed options, so consider how your workload may grow over the computer’s useful life. A 256GB drive can fill quickly with large photo libraries, downloaded video or development tools; selecting 512GB at checkout may be preferable to relying on external storage later.
Screen size and portability
MacBook Neo: compact workspace
The Neo’s 13-inch panel is sharp and bright on paper: 2408×1506 resolution, 219 pixels per inch and a listed 500-nit brightness. Its smaller footprint is useful on trains, classroom desks and small home work surfaces. The trade-off is less room for side-by-side documents, wide spreadsheets and a large timeline without scaling or an external display.
At 13 inches, text and interface elements may appear dense at the native resolution. macOS scaling can make them comfortable, but scaling gives you less effective workspace. Test the applications you use most—especially spreadsheets and creative timelines—rather than judging only by pixel count. The 500-nit figure is a specification maximum under Apple’s stated conditions, not a promise of identical brightness in every mode.

OmniBook 3: more room, but not one screen specification
The cited OmniBook 3 families include 14-inch and 16-inch variants. A 16-inch display can make spreadsheets and multitasking more comfortable, while a 14-inch model may be a middle ground. Screen quality depends on the SKU: HP lists multiple processor and display combinations, and certain OLED or 2.5K options are restricted to specified configurations.

Do not infer weight or battery endurance from screen size alone. Compare the exact HP dimensions and weight with the Neo configuration available in your market. Also check whether the panel is IPS or OLED, its native resolution and its brightness. Two laptops with the same diagonal measurement can feel very different for reading, colour work or outdoor use.
Operating system and everyday software
When macOS is the better fit
MacBook Neo runs macOS Tahoe and is designed to work with Apple devices, including iPhone integration described in Apple’s launch materials. This can simplify moving between devices and using familiar Apple workflows. Confirm that the applications, browser extensions, peripherals and work portals you rely on have macOS versions. Business tools, specialist Windows-only utilities and some games may require a different setup or may not be available.
For a household already using an iPhone, the convenience is most valuable when it matches a real routine: moving a file between devices, continuing a task or using the phone alongside the Mac. It should not override compatibility requirements. Ask your employer or school whether its VPN, device-management profile, printing system and security software support macOS Tahoe before switching.
When Windows makes more sense
An OmniBook 3 is the safer choice when your employer, school or software requires Windows, or when you depend on Windows-specific drivers and accessories. Windows also aligns naturally with USB-A peripherals and HDMI-equipped classroom or office displays. Check the exact edition and installed software on the listing; the OmniBook family name alone does not identify those details.
Windows may also reduce transition costs when your existing files, shortcuts and collaboration tools are built around Windows. Conversely, if you are moving from Windows to macOS, allow time to learn different keyboard commands, window management and file locations. Neither operating system is automatically better for email, documents or video calls; the deciding factor is the rest of your software and device ecosystem.
Memory and storage: a meaningful difference
Every Neo configuration in Apple’s listing has 8GB of unified memory. That is sufficient for ordinary web browsing, office documents, video calls and light creative work, but many simultaneous browser tabs, large datasets, virtual machines or demanding media projects can make 8GB restrictive. Storage is 256GB or 512GB, so decide capacity at purchase rather than assuming an upgrade later.
Unified memory is shared by the processor and graphics hardware, so the 8GB figure is not directly comparable to a Windows laptop’s memory number without considering the software and workload. It is still a hard capacity limit: a user running a browser with many tabs, a meeting app, a large spreadsheet and an image editor should leave headroom. Close unused applications, use cloud or external storage where appropriate, and avoid buying the smallest configuration solely because its headline price is lower.

Ports and display connections
Port selection can outweigh small performance differences in daily use. Neo provides two USB-C ports and a headphone jack. One USB-C port supports USB 3 data up to 10Gb/s and DisplayPort; the other supports USB 2 data up to 480Mb/s and charging. Apple specifies one external display at up to 4K/60Hz.
The cited 16-inch OmniBook 3 pages list two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, a headphone/microphone combo jack and HDMI. The 16-bu0000 page specifies HDMI 1.4b, while the 16-bs0000 Next Gen AI PC page specifies HDMI 2.1. The 14-hs0000 page also lists USB-C, USB-A, audio and HDMI 2.1. Those are series records, not a guarantee for every regional SKU, so verify the port diagram before ordering.
- Pick Neo if a mostly USB-C setup is acceptable and you need only one external 4K/60Hz display.
- Pick the matching HP SKU if you need built-in USB-A or HDMI without adapters.
- Use a hub or dock when the Neo’s two ports cannot cover your display, storage, charging and input devices at once; check that the hub supports the resolution and refresh rate you need.
Count the devices you connect simultaneously, not just the connectors you own. A wired mouse, keyboard, phone, webcam and monitor can consume every convenient port. On Neo, plugging a hub into the USB 2 port may limit storage or peripheral transfer speeds, while the USB 3 port is the documented DisplayPort connection. On HP, confirm whether both USB-C ports support charging, video output and the same data rate; the family pages do not make one universal promise.

Battery claims: useful, but not a head-to-head result
Apple rates MacBook Neo for up to 11 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 16 hours of video streaming. Apple’s footnote says the tests used pre-production systems in January 2026, Wi-Fi browsing across 25 popular sites and 1080p Safari streaming over Wi-Fi, with brightness set eight clicks from the bottom. Actual runtime varies with software, brightness, network conditions, peripherals and configuration.
“Up to” figures describe a controlled ceiling, not a guaranteed workday. Video calls, high screen brightness, browser-heavy work, external displays and background synchronization can reduce runtime. Charging from a hub, using a peripheral, or running demanding software also changes power draw. Treat Apple’s method as a useful reference point and record your own typical workload when evaluating reviews.
No directly comparable OmniBook 3 runtime is established for the different HP models listed here. Do not turn Apple’s estimate into a claim that Neo lasts longer than every OmniBook 3. For a fair purchase decision, find battery tests for the exact HP SKU and compare test methods, screen brightness, workload and power modes. A larger 16-inch panel, a different processor or an OLED option can materially alter results.
Performance: what Apple’s numbers do and do not show
Apple’s launch release claims MacBook Neo is up to 50% faster on everyday tasks than a bestselling PC using the latest shipping Intel Core Ultra 5, and up to three times faster for specified on-device AI workloads. Apple says the comparisons used preproduction Neo systems tested in January and February 2026 against production Windows comparison systems, with named software and benchmark conditions.
Those are Apple’s scoped claims, not an independent Neo-versus-OmniBook 3 test. They cannot be transferred to an unspecified OmniBook configuration: an OmniBook with a different Core, Core Ultra chip, memory amount, cooling design or display may produce a different result. If performance is decisive, compare the exact CPU and memory configurations using matched workloads such as your browser-and-office routine, video export or development build.

Benchmark labels also matter. A short burst test may reward a fast processor, while a long export can expose cooling and sustained power limits. Everyday responsiveness depends on storage, memory pressure, software optimization and the number of applications running at once. Use Apple’s figures as context for its own product positioning, then seek independent tests of the exact HP and Neo configurations you can actually buy.
Price and availability
Apple announced a UK starting price of £599, or £499 for education, with availability beginning March 11, 2026. Those figures are historical UK launch prices, not a current worldwide price. They may not match today’s retailer pricing, promotions, taxes or other currencies.
A matched current price for a particular OmniBook 3 configuration is not established here. Compare same-country, same-date listings with similar memory and storage, and include sale pricing only when the sale is still available. A low headline price for an HP model may reflect less memory, a smaller SSD, a different panel or an older processor.
Include the cost of making each laptop fit your desk. Neo may need a USB-C hub, HDMI adapter, or additional external storage if your accessories are older or your 256GB drive is too small. An OmniBook with built-in USB-A and HDMI may avoid those purchases, but a higher-memory or OLED configuration can raise its price. Compare the complete setup, warranty region, keyboard layout, charger and return policy—not only the laptop sticker price.
Which one should you buy?
Choose MacBook Neo if most of these statements are true
- You want macOS and Apple-device integration.
- A 13-inch display is large enough for your work.
- 8GB memory and 256GB or 512GB storage fit your workload.
- You can live with two USB-C ports and a headphone jack, or you already use a compatible hub.
- You prefer a clearly specified compact model over comparing several HP variants.
- Your required work, school and creative applications support macOS Tahoe.
- You value a single documented external 4K/60Hz display setup rather than multiple built-in video outputs.
Choose an HP OmniBook 3 if most of these statements are true
- You need Windows applications, enterprise policies or Windows-only peripherals.
- You prefer a 14-inch or 16-inch display for spreadsheets and multitasking.
- You need built-in USB-A and HDMI.
- You have found a specific CPU, memory, storage and panel combination that matches your budget.
- The local price is better after matching specifications and warranty terms.
- You need more than 8GB of memory and the chosen HP configuration provides it.
- You are prepared to verify the exact port layout, battery and weight instead of relying on the OmniBook 3 family name.
Everyday scenarios
For commuting and class: Neo’s 13-inch format can be easier to fit on a small desk or tray table. Check the actual weight and charger size in your market, and remember that a hub adds another item to carry. A 14-inch OmniBook may still be portable while offering more working area, but the exact dimensions decide that trade-off.
For spreadsheets and research: A 16-inch OmniBook can reduce window switching and make wide tables easier to read. Neo can handle ordinary documents and browsing, but you may prefer an external monitor for side-by-side work. Compare the selected screen’s resolution and brightness before assuming a larger panel is automatically better.
For a home office: Neo’s documented 4K/60Hz single-display support is sufficient for one monitor, while its two USB-C ports may require a dock for keyboard, storage and networking. An OmniBook with HDMI, USB-A and USB-C can connect more legacy equipment directly, subject to the specific SKU.
For creative or technical work: Identify the software first, then check memory and storage. The Neo’s 8GB ceiling may be comfortable for light editing but less suitable for large projects or virtual machines. An HP configuration with more memory may be preferable, but only the exact listing establishes whether that option exists and whether the processor and display meet your needs.

A practical buying checklist
- Copy the complete HP model and SKU, not just “OmniBook 3.”
- Record CPU, RAM, SSD, display resolution and panel type for both candidates.
- List every accessory you connect: monitor, printer, storage, camera, headset and network adapter.
- Check whether your essential applications and games run on macOS or require Windows.
- Compare same-country prices on the same date, including education or sale eligibility.
- Verify battery and charger information for the exact configuration.
- Confirm return policy, warranty region and keyboard layout before payment.
- Check the seller’s photograph and specification table against the manufacturer page; do not rely on a generic family image.
- If you need a monitor, confirm the supported video port, cable standard and refresh rate before ordering an adapter or dock.
Bottom line
MacBook Neo is the more straightforward everyday recommendation for someone who wants a compact macOS laptop, Apple integration and a defined 13-inch configuration. HP OmniBook 3 is the better answer for Windows compatibility, a larger screen or a broader built-in port selection—but only after you identify the exact model. The deciding evidence is the specific HP SKU, not the OmniBook 3 name by itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
