Whether an HP laptop has a backlit keyboard depends on its exact model and configuration—not just its product-family name. To check your laptop, find its full model or product number and look up the keyboard specification on HP’s product page. If it includes the feature, use the backlight icon on the function-key row to turn it on.
How to check whether your HP laptop has a backlit keyboard
- Find the exact model or product number. Check the laptop’s product label or system information for its identifying details.
- Look up that identifier on HP’s specifications page. HP recommends checking the exact product because, as HP Support explains, “Not all HP notebooks have a backlit keyboard.”
- Check the keyboard description. Look for wording that explicitly says “backlit keyboard.” A family name or a backlight icon on a key is not a substitute for confirming the specifications.
How to turn on the keyboard light
On most supported HP notebooks, press F4 or F5 to toggle the keyboard light. Depending on the laptop, you may need to hold Fn while pressing the key. Look across the whole function-key row for the keyboard-backlight icon: its position can vary by model.
HP’s general guide also identifies F5, F9, or F11 as possible backlight-key positions on different laptops; some require Fn, and repeated presses may cycle through available settings. These are common patterns, not a universal key map. Use the icon and documentation for your exact notebook. See HP Tech Takes’ keyboard-lighting guide.
Why HP family names do not guarantee a backlight
HP lists ENVY, Pavilion, OMEN, Spectre, and select EliteBook and ProBook models among product lines with backlit options. That does not mean every laptop in any of those lines has the feature. Confirm the full product number before relying on a family name.
#1 Best Overall
The same qualification applies within a series. HP’s 15-fd0000 series specifications say that a backlit keyboard is available on select models, rather than on every configuration.
An example of an explicitly verified configuration
HP’s product sheet for the Laptop 15-fd0056ne, product number 9Q4M6EA, specifies a “Full-size, backlit, soft gray keyboard with numeric keypad.” That confirms the feature for that configuration; it does not establish current stock or availability in every market. See the HP product sheet.

If the keyboard-light key does nothing
- Verify that your exact configuration includes a backlit keyboard in HP’s specifications.
- Check for the backlight icon elsewhere on the function-key row, and try the indicated key with Fn if needed.
- Use the documentation for the exact model rather than assuming the same key works across all HP laptops.
If the configuration lacks the built-in hardware, installing software cannot add an integrated keyboard backlight. OMEN notebooks may have separate gaming-related lighting information; consult the support material for the exact model.
