To enable Bluetooth on an HP laptop running Windows 10, open Bluetooth and other devices settings from Windows Search and switch Bluetooth on. Then put your accessory into pairing mode and add it from that same settings page. If the Bluetooth option is missing, check Device Manager before assuming the laptop needs an adapter.
Turn on Bluetooth in Windows 10
- Open Windows Search and type Bluetooth and other devices settings.
- Open the matching settings page.
- Set the Bluetooth switch to On.
This works when the laptop has Bluetooth hardware that Windows can use. HP’s FAQ describes this Windows path: HP PCs – Bluetooth Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
Pair headphones or another Bluetooth accessory
- Power on the accessory and put it into pairing or discovery mode. The method varies by device; follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
- On the laptop, open Bluetooth and other devices settings and select Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Select Bluetooth, then choose the accessory when it appears.
- Follow any prompts on the laptop and accessory. If asked, enter the PIN shown by the accessory, and approve any authorization prompt on the accessory promptly.
HP’s connection instructions cover Windows 11 and note that steps for other Windows versions should be similar; the precise screen layout may differ across Windows 10 builds. See HP PCs – Connecting a Bluetooth device (Windows).
Bluetooth is missing: check whether the laptop reports hardware
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for a Bluetooth or Bluetooth Radios category.
- If a Bluetooth category appears, the laptop reports Bluetooth hardware; investigate settings or drivers rather than buying an adapter first.
- If neither category appears, check support information for your exact HP laptop model to establish whether it includes Bluetooth.
If the computer lacks Bluetooth hardware, HP says a USB Bluetooth adapter, also called a Bluetooth dongle, can add Bluetooth. Check compatibility for both the laptop and the adapter before choosing one. An adapter is not a general fix for Bluetooth hardware that is present but disabled or affected by a driver problem. HP’s FAQ explains the hardware check and adapter option: HP PCs – Bluetooth Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

Fix a Bluetooth pairing or connection problem
Try these checks in order; the cause may be the accessory, wireless conditions, or a driver rather than a fault with the laptop.
- Check the accessory. Make sure it is charged or powered on and actually in pairing mode.
- Check Windows wireless settings. Confirm Bluetooth is on and Airplane mode is off. If you intend to use Airplane mode, HP says you can manually turn Bluetooth back on while it is enabled.
- Reduce distance and interference. Move the accessory closer and reduce obstructions or nearby wireless interference. HP describes about 10 m (33 ft) as a typical Bluetooth range, not a guaranteed distance for every device or environment.
- Restart both devices. Restart the laptop and accessory, then try pairing again.
- Check the Bluetooth driver. In Device Manager, check for a driver update. If errors persist, HP also describes uninstalling the Bluetooth device, restarting the laptop, and pairing again so Windows can reinstall it.
These troubleshooting steps and the typical range qualification are covered in HP PCs – Troubleshooting a Bluetooth connection in Windows and HP’s Bluetooth FAQ. Results can vary by laptop and accessory.
