Flexible polymer chains can assemble with zinc into a rigid, porous, crystalline framework. In a 2015 proof of principle, researchers showed that a polymer built with regularly spaced metal–organic framework (MOF) ligands could do what conventional expectations said was unlikely: form an ordered framework even though the starting polymer was amorphous and its chains were flexible.
What is a polyMOF?
A polyMOF is a hybrid material that combines a polymeric ligand with a metal–organic framework. In a conventional MOF, small organic ligands connect metal ions into an ordered structure. The polyMOF approach uses a polymer chain carrying those ligand groups, so the chain itself becomes part of the framework-building material.
The 2015 work was led by Seth Cohen at the University of California, San Diego. The team used polymers made from methylene units, with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid groups incorporated into the backbone at regular intervals. These acid groups are the MOF ligands that can coordinate with metal ions.
How could a flexible polymer form a rigid framework?
The polymer was not a rigid, pre-shaped scaffold. The reported chains were about 20–50 repeat units long, with five to eight methylene spacers between ligand groups. Heating the polymer in the presence of zinc produced a rigid, porous, crystalline material.

The result challenged two assumptions at once: that MOFs need small, structurally stiff ligands to form frameworks, and that polymers are generally amorphous rather than highly crystalline and porous. Cohen described the finding as “a very surprising result” and said it “defies conventional wisdom both for MOFs, which says you need small, rigid ligands, and for polymers, which are amorphous, not highly crystalline and not porous.” Chemistry World reported the findings on 30 April 2015.
What did the 2015 work demonstrate?
- A flexible polymer bearing regularly spaced MOF ligands can form a rigid, porous, crystalline framework with zinc.
- The precursor polymer was amorphous, while the resulting material was ordered.
- Reaction conditions affected the observed morphology: the team reported forms including spheres and films.
The account did not establish a quantitative comparison of those forms in pore size, stability, or performance. It also said that the mechanism by which order emerged from the amorphous polymer precursor was not yet clear.

What might polyMOFs make possible?
The concept could let researchers vary the polymer’s functional groups to introduce properties beyond those of the framework alone. One proposed direction was placing electronically conducting groups in MOF pores. Martin Attfield, a MOF researcher at the University of Manchester, also pointed to possible gains in hydrolytic or mechanical stability and more orderly organization of polymers.

The University of Florida’s Miller Research Group bibliography lists a 2016 follow-up paper titled “polyMOFs as Water Tolerant Materials for Selective Carbon Dioxide Separations,” showing that research continued in this direction; the title alone does not establish commercial performance or deployment. Why the result matters—and what it does not mean
The significance is the materials-design idea: a flexible polymer can supply MOF-binding groups and still participate in forming a crystalline, porous framework. It expands the kinds of building blocks materials chemists can explore. The proof of principle does not, by itself, show that polyMOFs are ready for devices, industrial separation, or other practical uses. Nor does it establish that the material or its ligand is commercially available.
