A Zelda remake rebuilds or reimagines an older game; a remaster or HD re-release updates an existing game while retaining more of its original design; and Nintendo Switch Online gives members access to selected classic versions. The labels are not perfectly consistent across Nintendo releases or regions, so the most reliable comparison is what changed and how you get the game.

What separates a remake, a remaster, and a classic release?

These terms describe different kinds of change and access, rather than a perfectly consistent Nintendo classification system. A remake typically reconstructs or reimagines substantial parts of an older game. A remaster or HD re-release generally preserves more of the original game while updating presentation or platform support. A Nintendo Switch Online classic is an older game offered through a membership library, not a new remake.

  • How much was rebuilt: A remake may substantially change the presentation and selected gameplay systems. A remaster typically makes more limited changes around an existing game.
  • What you play: A remake or re-release is a distinct modern product; a Classics library offers a classic version.
  • How you get it: Remakes and HD re-releases are sold as standalone games. Switch Online classics are available through a membership, with the required library tier depending on the title.

Because Nintendo’s own wording varies, look at a release’s features and access model alongside its label.

How the distinctions apply to Zelda releases

Release type Zelda example What changed or what you access How to get it
Remake or reimagining The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Switch, 2019) Reworked presentation, new soundtrack arrangements, and gameplay changes, including more flexible item equipping and map navigation. Separately sold physical or digital game.
HD update or re-release The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD (Switch, 2021) A Switch release of the 2011 Wii game. Nintendo’s Japanese listing calls it a remake, illustrating that the terminology is not uniform. Separately sold physical or digital game.
Classic through a membership library The Legend of Zelda (NES); Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64) Access to classic games. Nintendo describes the Nintendo 64 collection as reproductions of original games for Switch. Nintendo Switch Online; Ocarina of Time is in the Nintendo 64 library, which requires the Expansion Pack.
Announced rebuilt release Ocarina of Time (Switch 2) Nintendo describes a version built from the ground up, with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and modernized movement and camera features. Nintendo lists November 5, 2026 as the release date; check the listing for current availability.

Why Link’s Awakening is a remake example

The Switch edition of Link’s Awakening is a separate 2019 release based on the classic Game Boy adventure. Nintendo describes it as reimagined and points to updated presentation, new soundtrack arrangements, and gameplay changes. Those changes make it a useful example of a remake: it draws on the earlier game but is not simply the original presented through a classic-game library. See Nintendo’s product listing.

Why Skyward Sword HD shows the limits of labels

Skyward Sword HD brought the 2011 Wii game to Switch in 2021. Its title emphasizes an HD update, while Nintendo Japan’s listing calls the Switch version a remake. That regional difference is why it is better to describe the concrete release—an updated Switch version of the Wii game—than to treat “remake” and “remaster” as strict, universally applied categories. Nintendo’s U.S. product listing identifies the Switch edition.

What Nintendo Switch Online provides

Nintendo Switch Online gives members access to libraries of selected classic games. The NES version of The Legend of Zelda appears in the NES Classics library, while Ocarina of Time is listed in the Nintendo 64 Classics library. The latter requires the Expansion Pack membership tier. These are membership-library releases, not standalone remakes of those games; availability and required tier depend on the title and the current catalog.

Nintendo lists a new Ocarina of Time version for Switch 2 with a November 5, 2026 release date. As of October 13, 2026, that date is still upcoming, so its announced features should not be mistaken for a released product or independently confirmed gameplay. Check Nintendo’s listing for release status and edition details.
