Short answer: YouTube Music reads album art and metadata from the audio files you upload from a computer. You prepare the file locally, then upload it; the track appears in the Uploads area of your library and remains personal to your account. YouTube Music’s current help documentation does not establish that you can edit an uploaded track’s metadata or cover art in place. Older TeamYouTube and community guidance recommends correcting the local file, deleting the old upload, and uploading the corrected copy.
What YouTube Music does with album art and metadata
A personal upload is an audio file plus the metadata and album art associated with that file. YouTube Music’s help documentation states that “Only audio files and their associated metadata and album art can be uploaded.” In practice, the information shown for your upload is therefore prepared in the file on your computer before YouTube Music receives it.
This is different from a song in YouTube Music’s streamed catalog. The official upload and artist-profile pages explain personal uploads and profile images, but they do not document how the streamed catalog obtains, matches, or corrects its artwork and metadata. You should not assume that editing an MP3 on your computer changes a catalog release, an artist’s official page, or other listeners’ view of a song.

Album-cover artwork belongs with an uploaded recording. A profile photo is a separate artist asset. YouTube’s artist-profile guidance specifically says not to use album art as the profile image, so replacing a profile image will not repair the cover shown for a personal upload.

How to upload music with its artwork and metadata
The documented upload workflow is computer-based. You cannot use a video, PDF, or another non-audio file as the upload source.
- Prepare the local audio file. Use one of the formats listed by YouTube Music Help: FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, or WMA. Confirm that the metadata and the desired cover image are saved in the file before you begin.
- Open YouTube Music on a computer. Go to music.youtube.com and sign in to the account that should own the upload.
- Start the upload. Either drag the files onto the YouTube Music page or open the profile menu and choose Upload music.
- Wait for processing. A successful upload may take time to appear in your library. Do not assume that a missing item immediately after the transfer means the file was rejected.
- Find the result. Open your library and select Uploads. The uploaded track is personal-library content, not a new public release in YouTube Music’s catalog.
YouTube Music’s current help page lists a maximum library size of 100,000 songs. That is the figure on an undated help page, checked October 10, 2026; it is not a dated usage statistic or a promise that every account can exceed the limit.
What happens after an upload
- Playback is private: only the uploader can play the uploaded songs. They do not become a shareable family-plan library.
- Recommendations are separate: YouTube says uploads do not influence recommendations.
- Background, ad-free, and offline playback: the upload page says these are available even without Premium.
- Casting and smart speakers: Premium members can cast uploads and play them on smart speakers and Sonos.
These playback benefits do not change the ownership or visibility of the files. An upload remains tied to the account that submitted it.
How to prepare metadata and cover art before uploading
YouTube Music’s current upload documentation confirms that metadata and album art travel with the audio upload, but it does not provide a complete list of supported metadata fields or a cover-image specification. The safest workflow is to make the local file authoritative before sending it.
Use a desktop metadata editor when needed
A desktop tag editor can open the local audio file, change its descriptive fields, and embed an image. The software is only a preparation tool: it edits your copy of the file and does not modify YouTube Music’s hosted catalog. Save the edited file, close the editor, and use that saved copy for the upload.

MediaMonkey was cited by a YouTube Music community product expert as an example of file-editing software. That mention is an example rather than an official YouTube recommendation, and it does not establish current compatibility or any relationship with YouTube Music.
Embed one deliberate cover image
If a file contains several artwork images, playback software can disagree about which one to display. A 2022 community product-expert answer about missing artwork advised checking whether artwork is embedded and whether the file contains multiple artwork images. It also acknowledged that a bug could be involved. Treat that as troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee about the current interface.
Before uploading, check the file in an audio-tag editor or another player that can display embedded artwork. Remove unintended duplicate images, retain the cover you want associated with the track, save the file, and then upload that copy.
Keep a clean source copy
Store the corrected audio file somewhere you can find it again. If the upload later shows a typo or the wrong image, you will need the local source to make a replacement. YouTube Music does not document a way to download a corrected master from the service itself.
Can you edit metadata or album art after uploading?
The current official upload page does not confirm an in-place editing control for personal uploads. Historical community answers describe a file-replacement workflow instead.

On August 5, 2020, Hazel, a TeamYouTube Community Manager, wrote: “While YouTube Music doesn’t currently support the ability to edit metadata directly in the app, you can always edit your metadata on your computer before uploading (or on Google Play Music before transferring) it to YouTube Music.” The reference to Google Play Music describes the transfer process at that time and is not evidence of a current Google Play Music feature.

Because these are dated community answers, they should be read as historical guidance. The official help page reviewed for this article does not say whether a newer in-place editor is available today.
Replacement procedure for a wrong tag or cover
- Locate the original file on your computer, or obtain a copy that still contains the audio and its tags.
- Open it in a local metadata editor.
- Correct the relevant information and replace or remove unintended artwork images. Save the file under a clear name so you can distinguish it from the old upload.
- In YouTube Music, open Library, go to Uploads, and delete the incorrect personal upload.
- Upload the corrected file through drag-and-drop or Profile menu > Upload music.
- Allow time for processing, then check the replacement in Library > Uploads.
Deleting first avoids leaving two versions of the same recording in your personal library. It also means the old upload is no longer available to you, so verify the corrected local file before removing anything.

The image was never embedded
An audio file can have visible tags without containing an embedded cover image. Open the local file in a tag editor and confirm that an artwork image is present before uploading. If it is absent, add the intended image, save the file, and use the replacement workflow.
The file contains multiple artwork images
Multiple embedded images can create ambiguous results. Keep one intentional cover image, save the file again, and re-upload it. The 2022 product-expert response raised this possibility but did not establish a universal rule for which image YouTube Music chooses.

The upload is still processing
The help page warns that a successful upload may take time to appear in the library. Check Uploads again after processing has completed before changing the file or submitting another copy.
A service bug may be involved
The community troubleshooting answer discussing missing artwork acknowledged that a bug was possible. If the local file clearly contains one valid image and the replacement still displays incorrectly, document the file format and behavior when contacting YouTube support or the community. Do not infer that the image is permanently rejected from one failed display.
You are looking at a different asset
Confirm that you are viewing the personal upload, not a streamed catalog version or the artist’s profile page. Profile imagery is managed in YouTube Studio and follows different guidance; it does not control the album art attached to your private upload.
Rights, privacy, and changes to stored files
YouTube’s stored-music policy says you retain your existing rights and are responsible for having the rights needed to upload third-party material. Uploading a recording to your private library does not give you permission to use music you do not control.

Keep your own master copy if the exact original file matters.
What the official documentation does—and does not—settle
- It explicitly documents audio uploads with associated metadata and album art.
- It documents computer uploads, the five accepted file-format families listed above, processing delay, and a 100,000-song library maximum.
- It says uploads are private to the uploader, do not affect recommendations, and can be played in the background, ad-free, and offline without Premium.
- It does not currently document an in-place editor for uploaded metadata or artwork.
- It does not identify the source, matching system, or correction path for artwork and metadata in streamed catalog releases.
That last distinction prevents a common mistake: a correctly tagged personal file is not a mechanism for correcting an official release elsewhere in YouTube Music.
A practical pre-upload checklist
- Confirm the file is FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, or WMA.
- Review the metadata in a local editor and save the final values.
- Embed the intended cover image and remove unintended duplicate artwork.
- Keep a backup of the corrected local file.
- Upload from a computer by dragging the file to music.youtube.com or using Profile menu > Upload music.
- Wait for processing, then verify the item under Library > Uploads.
- If the result is wrong, correct the local file and replace the upload rather than assuming an in-app editor exists.
Bottom line
For personal YouTube Music uploads, the local audio file is the source of the metadata and album art. Prepare it carefully on a computer, upload it in a supported format, and check the result in your private Uploads library. If a tag or cover is wrong, the documented evidence supports correcting the local file and re-uploading; it does not confirm a current in-place editing feature. Artist profile images and artwork for streamed catalog releases are separate systems with different, partly undocumented workflows.
