X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental maps gave conservation scientists a view of a degraded Roman wall painting that ordinary light could not provide. In the approximately 2,000-year-old portrait of a woman from Herculaneum, the maps distinguished separate colour layers and revealed an underlying sketch. The finding shows what chemical imaging can recover from a damaged surface, but the published account does not identify the exact pigments, describe a restoration, or claim that the portrait’s original appearance has been fully reconstructed.
What the elemental maps revealed
A report published by Chemistry World on August 21, 2017, described conservation scientists examining a degraded wall painting of a woman from Herculaneum. The painting was described as about 2,000 years old. Instead of relying only on the colours still visible to the eye, the team used X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to create maps showing where particular elements occurred across the image. Those maps exposed distinct colour layers and an underlying sketch that was difficult to see in the damaged visible paint. Chemistry World’s report is the source for that account.
“Hidden” does not mean that a complete, perfectly legible second portrait was recovered. It means that signals associated with material beneath or within the visibly degraded surface formed patterns that were not apparent in ordinary viewing. The result is a more informative record of how the image was built and altered over time, not a photographic reconstruction of its original colours.

XRF is an analytical technique based on the characteristic X-rays emitted by elements after a material is excited by incoming radiation. Each element can produce a distinctive set of X-ray energies. A detector measures those energies, and software assigns the detected signal to locations on the object. Repeating the measurement across a grid produces an elemental map: a two-dimensional display of where a measured element is relatively more or less abundant.

From excitation to an image
- Excitation: an X-ray source illuminates a small area of the painting. The incoming energy can displace inner-shell electrons in atoms in the paint.
- Emission: as the atoms return to a lower-energy state, they emit secondary, characteristic X-rays.
- Detection: a detector records the energies and intensities of those emissions. The energy pattern is used to associate signals with elements.
- Scanning: the instrument moves across the painting or examines successive positions. Each measurement receives coordinates.
- Mapping: the measurements are assembled into colour-coded maps, allowing researchers to compare elemental distributions with the visible portrait.
The maps therefore describe elemental distributions, not paint names. An element can occur in more than one compound, and a single historical paint layer can contain several elements. Dust, later repairs, salts, and the wall support can also contribute signals. Layered paintings make interpretation harder because the detector may receive information from more than one depth. For that reason, an element map by itself does not prove that a particular named pigment was used.
Why a chemical map can show more than the eye
Visible inspection records the light that reaches the observer after interacting with the current surface. If a paint layer has faded, darkened, flaked, or become covered by deposits, the surviving image may no longer show the boundaries between layers. XRF adds a different kind of contrast: two areas that look similar can have different elemental compositions, while a faint or obscured layer can still produce a detectable signal.
| Question | Visible inspection | XRF elemental mapping |
|---|---|---|
| What is measured? | Light, colour, texture and visible damage at the surface. | Characteristic X-ray signals associated with elements in the measured volume. |
| What pattern may become clear? | Shapes and tones that remain visually distinct. | Boundaries between materials or layers with different elemental distributions. |
| What happened in the Herculaneum report? | The portrait was visibly degraded. | Maps revealed colour layers and an underlying sketch not readily apparent in the visible painting. |
| What cannot be concluded automatically? | Visible colour alone does not identify a chemical recipe. | An elemental signal does not, by itself, establish one exact pigment or the painting’s original appearance. |
This is why the discovery matters even if the face remains difficult to read. The maps can preserve evidence of construction that would otherwise be lost when the surface deteriorates further.

What the portrait can tell historians and conservators
Reconstructing the order of painting
Separate mapped layers can indicate that the image was not applied as one uniform coat. A visible contour may belong to a later layer, while a different elemental distribution underneath may correspond to an earlier stage. In the reported portrait, the maps showed colour layers and a sketch, giving investigators clues about the sequence of marks without requiring the damaged surface to be cleaned or repainted.
Distinguishing design from later damage
A faint line can be mistaken for a crack, stain, or accidental mark when viewed only in visible light. If a corresponding elemental pattern follows a coherent facial or clothing feature, it may support the interpretation that the line belongs to the artwork. That interpretation still requires specialists to compare the map with the painting, its stratigraphy, and other evidence; the news report does not provide a complete catalogue of every mapped feature.
Planning future conservation decisions
Elemental maps can help a conservator decide where the original material may survive and where later deposits or repairs complicate the surface. They can also provide a baseline for monitoring. The available account does not say that a treatment was performed on this portrait, which areas were cleaned, or what the final conservation result was. Mapping evidence should therefore be understood as documentation and interpretation, not as proof that the wall painting was restored.

What “portable macro-XRF” means in the related conference record
The program for the American Chemical Society’s 2017 national meeting lists a presentation titled “Portrait of an ancient woman revealed by high resolution portable macro-XRF scanning.” The listed presenters are E. Del Federico, C. Kehlet, N. Barbi, M. Gironda and R. Alberti. The program is useful corroboration that a closely related study of an ancient woman’s portrait used high-resolution portable macro-XRF scanning. It should not be treated as proof that the program entry is the exact paper behind the Chemistry World news report, nor does it supply the scan settings or a full results dataset. The meeting program is available as a PDF from the American Chemical Society.

A portable instrument can be brought to an archaeological object or museum surface that cannot safely be removed for laboratory analysis. “Macro” describes a scanning arrangement intended to cover comparatively large areas while retaining spatial information useful for an artwork. The conference title indicates that portability and high-resolution scanning were part of that presentation; it does not establish the instrument’s working distance, spot size, scan time, radiation settings, or detector model for the Herculaneum portrait.
How to read an elemental map without overclaiming
Maps are persuasive images, but interpretation has several stages. A responsible reading keeps the measurement separate from the historical conclusion.

- Start with the legend. Identify the element represented, the colour scale, and whether the display shows raw intensity, a normalized value, or a composite. A bright colour generally means a stronger recorded signal within that map, not a literal paint colour.
- Check the spatial relationship. Ask whether a signal follows a visible feature, appears only in exposed damage, or covers the entire wall support. A broad background signal may come from the plaster rather than the portrait.
- Consider depth and overlap. XRF can detect contributions from multiple layers. A signal beneath a surface coating may coexist with a signal from a later retouch or deposit.
- Compare several elements. A pattern becomes more informative when multiple maps and the visible image agree. One element alone is rarely enough to name a compound.
- Separate evidence from interpretation. “Element X is concentrated along this contour” is a measurement-based description. “This contour is a specific historical pigment” is a further identification that requires additional evidence.
The Herculaneum report supports the first-level conclusion: elemental maps exposed colour layers and an underlying sketch. It does not publish the element-by-element assignments needed to go further.
What is established—and what remains unknown
| Established by the available sources | Not established by those sources |
|---|---|
| The object is a degraded wall painting depicting a woman at Herculaneum, described as about 2,000 years old. | The exact findspot, dimensions, current owner, or complete object history. |
| X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was used to produce elemental maps. | The instrument model, beam settings, detector, scan spacing, or total scan time. |
| The maps showed different colour layers and an underlying sketch that was not readily visible. | A confirmed list of pigments or a complete reconstruction of the original palette. |
| The ACS 2017 program lists a closely related portable macro-XRF presentation and names five presenters. | Whether that conference presentation and the news report concern exactly the same project or object. |
| The technique provided evidence about hidden material structure. | A reported restoration, treatment schedule, or final conservation outcome. |
Keeping these boundaries matters. Ancient-paint analysis often combines several methods, but the sources available for this account do not document such a combined campaign. It would be inaccurate to fill the gaps with a confident pigment list or to say that the woman’s original face has been recovered in full.

Roman wall paintings are physical records as well as images. Their meaning can depend on preparatory lines, revisions, colour placement and the relationship between layers. Once a surface has degraded, conventional photography may preserve only the last readable stage. Elemental mapping can retain clues from earlier stages without requiring an investigator to scrape or expose them.

The approach also changes how “damage” is understood. A painting may look almost blank in visible light yet contain a chemically coherent structure. That does not make every faint signal an intentional mark, but it gives conservators a way to test competing explanations while leaving the object in place. For museums and archaeological sites, the resulting maps can become a digital record that other specialists can revisit as interpretation improves.
Limits readers should keep in mind
- Element is not pigment: the same element can be present in different materials, so naming a pigment requires supporting analysis.
- Maps are not ordinary photographs: their colours are visualization choices and should not be read as the portrait’s original hues.
- Signals can overlap: the detector may receive information from paint, deposits, repairs and the wall support at once.
- Resolution has practical limits: a map can reveal a broad layer while remaining unable to resolve every brushstroke.
- Interpretation is conditional: the published account reports the discovery of layers and a sketch, not a complete technical reconstruction or treatment result.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore specific: XRF elemental mapping made otherwise obscure layers of a Herculaneum woman’s portrait visible as material patterns, including an underlying sketch. It expanded the evidence available to conservators and art historians without proving exactly which pigments created every mark or what the painting looked like when new.
