Uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) collect marine survey data offshore without onboard crews. XOCEAN’s approach links those vessels to remote fleet operations and cloud processing, with the goal of making usable data available near real time. The system—not vessel size alone—is central to how the company says it scales its work.
What an uncrewed surface vessel does
A USV is a surface vessel that operates without an onboard crew. In commercial marine survey work, it can carry equipment to acquire information about the seabed and ocean conditions. XOCEAN describes using its vessels for work including offshore energy, fishing-related applications, and bathymetry, the measurement and mapping of underwater depth.
Survey methods mentioned in the company interview include sonar, echosounding, and magnetometry. The interview does not specify sensor models or assign particular payloads to particular vessels, so those methods should be understood as examples of data-acquisition techniques rather than a fixed equipment list for every mission.

How the data moves from sea to client
- Acquire data offshore. A USV gathers survey information while operating at sea.
- Connect the vessel to remote operations. XOCEAN says its fleet is coordinated remotely, rather than requiring a crew aboard each vessel.
- Stream and prioritize information. CEO James Ives says offshore data is streamed to a cloud-based processing environment, where the system prioritizes what is processed and scaled.
- Process and provide usable results. Cloud infrastructure supports processing and access for clients, with near-real-time delivery described as the goal.
Ives says the operating model uses AWS infrastructure alongside remote fleet operations and data processing. Offshore connectivity is constrained and conditions change, according to the interview, so the end-to-end system is designed around those limitations. The source does not give a bandwidth figure, communications-hardware specification, latency target, or uptime measure. “Near real time” therefore describes the intended workflow, not a guaranteed delivery time.

Why use a fleet rather than rely on one large vessel?
XOCEAN’s rationale is that multiple smaller assets can offer flexibility when weather, permits, or project scope change, and can reduce dependence on a single asset. Ives summarizes the company’s view: “XOCEAN has learned that scale comes from systems, not size.” These are the company’s stated advantages; the interview does not provide measured cost savings, comparative risk rates, or an independent evaluation against crewed survey vessels.
The model shifts some operational work from people aboard vessels to remote coordination and data infrastructure. That can be relevant when assessing staffing and offshore exposure, but it does not establish that USVs can replace crewed vessels for every task. The source provides no direct comparison of the survey capabilities or costs of the two approaches.

What marine data can support
Offshore projects use marine survey information to understand seabed geology and structural stability. The interview also describes needs connected with oceanography and sea conditions, offshore wind farms, subsea cables, climate research, and resource exploration. These are examples of why such data matters, not evidence that XOCEAN serves every application equally or has documented projects in each one.

What the offshore wind figures mean
In a 2026 interview, Ives said XOCEAN had delivered data for offshore wind projects representing approximately 48 gigawatts of capacity across development, construction, and operations. That figure refers to the capacity of projects the company says it has supported; it is not capacity installed or owned by XOCEAN.

Ives also described a forward-looking pipeline of more than 100 gigawatts, based on projects and programs the company was actively supporting with clients. That is a pipeline view, not completed work or a guarantee that those projects will proceed.

Ives describes the objective as “delivering usable data faster,” rather than simply moving more data. For a prospective client, the practical questions are therefore mission-specific: what survey method and data are required, how quickly processed results are needed, and what delivery and service commitments apply to the project. The interview does not supply those contract-level details.
