Buying an Xbox game does not automatically give you its PC version. The clearest exception is a digital game marked Xbox Play Anywhere: one qualifying purchase covers supported Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, with supported saves and add-ons following you between devices. Game Pass works differently: it provides subscription access to a changing catalog, not permanent ownership.
Does buying an Xbox game also give you the PC version?
Only when the specific game’s entitlement includes both platforms. A matching title or franchise name on Xbox and PC does not prove that one purchase covers both versions. Before checkout, open the exact Xbox Store listing and check its supported platforms and whether it carries the Xbox Play Anywhere badge. Xbox’s Play Anywhere page describes the participating digital games and qualifying digital codes from participating retailers.
Microsoft’s Xbox Developer overview reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere-enabled titles on its program page in 2026. That is Microsoft’s changeable catalog count, not an independently audited total; check the game listing for current eligibility. The same developer page says more than 50% of players today are gaming on multiple devices. Microsoft does not provide a study, method, or publication date for that figure, so treat it as a claim on the Xbox developer page rather than an independently established market statistic.
What one Play Anywhere purchase includes
For an eligible digital title, the same account can access supported Xbox console, Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, and supported Windows handheld versions without paying an additional Play Anywhere charge. Xbox states in its FAQ, “No, there is no additional cost for XBOX Play Anywhere.” That means no extra fee for the cross-device feature; you still pay for the game unless you access it through a separate entitlement such as Game Pass.

Qualifying digital purchases from participating retailers can count, but the program applies to digital games. The FAQ does not extend the cross-purchase entitlement to a disc. Check the store listing and the code’s terms rather than assuming a physical copy or any retailer code unlocks PC access. A code needs to qualify under the program; the fact that it was purchased from a retailer is not by itself proof of cross-platform rights.
Where to find the game after purchase
Xbox says eligible games appear in Ready to Install on console and My Library on PC. Sign in with the account that owns the entitlement. A Windows PC must also meet the publisher’s system requirements; owning the game does not guarantee that a particular computer can run it. Entitlement answers where you have a right to access the game; system requirements answer whether your computer can run that version.
How to check a game before paying
- Open the exact game listing in the Xbox Store. Do not infer rights from another edition, a franchise name, or a listing in a different PC storefront.
- Check the platform information and Play Anywhere badge. If you want one digital purchase for console and PC, confirm the game itself is marked eligible. A PC edition being sold somewhere else does not establish that the Xbox purchase includes it.
- Identify what you are buying. Distinguish a direct digital purchase, a physical disc, a qualifying retailer digital code, and subscription access. They are different entitlements.
- Check PC requirements on the game’s listing or publisher information, then compare them with your computer. Play Anywhere does not waive hardware requirements.
- Consider the add-ons you want. For an eligible Play Anywhere game, Xbox says supported add-ons travel with the player. Check that the base game and add-on are associated with the same qualifying game entitlement; do not assume this behavior extends to unrelated titles or storefronts.
- Verify current terms before checkout. Game availability, subscription catalog membership, and regional offers can change. The current listing and local plan details matter more than an old catalog entry or a page for another region.
Does Game Pass mean you own the game?
No. Game Pass provides access to titles in a changing library under the selected plan. Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules tie that access to the subscription, and Xbox’s subscription page says access lasts until the subscription expires or the game leaves the library. A title appearing in a Game Pass catalog is therefore not the same as a permanent purchase. If either the subscription ends or the title leaves the catalog, that subscription entitlement no longer provides access.
Availability and features depend on the plan, region, platform, and time. Xbox’s plan page distinguishes offerings by supported devices, catalog access, streaming, and other benefits; it identifies PC Game Pass as PC-only and says cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass. The page reviewed is UK-localized, so its offer details should not be treated as universal pricing or terms. Check the current plan details and catalog for your region and device. Do not choose a plan based only on the name: compare the supported devices and benefits that are currently listed where you live.

Game Pass is also not a blanket cross-buy promise. Whether a game appears in a subscription library and whether a purchase is Play Anywhere are separate questions. A catalog title may be available to play under a plan without becoming part of your permanent library, while a Play Anywhere entitlement depends on the eligible game and the account’s qualifying digital purchase or other valid access.
| Access type | What grants access | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Direct digital purchase | The game entitlement bought for the platform or platforms specified by that listing. | Whether the exact listing includes the platform you want; only eligible titles carry Play Anywhere rights. |
| Xbox Play Anywhere digital purchase | One qualifying digital purchase for supported Xbox console and Windows versions. | The Play Anywhere badge, supported devices, and PC system requirements. |
| Game Pass | Subscription access to games in the plan’s changing catalog. | That the plan supports your device and the title remains available in your region and catalog; access is not permanent ownership. |
| Physical disc | The disc-based entitlement for the supported console use described by its product terms. | Do not assume the disc grants the PC version; the Play Anywhere FAQ describes digital games. |
When comparing a one-time purchase with a subscription, consider more than the upfront cost. A purchase gives you the entitlement specified by that product listing, while Game Pass access depends on an active subscription and continued catalog availability. For either route, check the supported platform, whether your progress can carry over, and—if you will use a PC—whether it meets the game’s requirements. Subscription plan prices and benefits vary by market and can change, so consult the current local page rather than relying on a price quoted for another region.
Do saves, add-ons, and achievements carry between Xbox and PC?
For Play Anywhere games, Xbox says game progress, add-ons, and achievements follow the player across supported devices. You can resume a supported save on another device, and DLC bought or earned for a Play Anywhere game you own can be used on supported devices. These benefits are specific to participating games; they should not be assumed for every Xbox title, every PC storefront, or a game that merely shares the same name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe same player cannot be signed into the same game on multiple supported devices at once, according to Xbox’s Play Anywhere FAQ. Cross-device access is for moving between devices, not running the same game simultaneously on several of them under one player’s account. If you switch from console to PC, use the same account and allow the game’s supported progress to follow; do not treat the simultaneous-use restriction as permission for one player to play in parallel on multiple devices.

Play history is not proof of ownership
In August 2025, Xbox announced that play history would sync across console and the Xbox PC app, including cloud-playable games. That history can help you find or resume a game, but it does not establish that you own it: a listed cloud-playable game may be one you purchased or one available through Game Pass, as described in the Xbox Wire announcement. Check the actual game entitlement or subscription catalog when you need to know why you can access a title.
How does household sharing work?
Sharing is separate from Play Anywhere and can vary between console and Windows. Microsoft’s GDK documentation describes a Home Xbox setting that shares games, durable add-ons, and subscription-enabled content with other users on the designated console. Consumable add-ons are tied to the purchaser’s account instead. This distinction matters when a household is trying to share an add-on: a durable item may follow the documented console-sharing rules, but a consumable is account-specific.
Windows uses distinct licensing behavior; it is not simply the same Home Xbox arrangement on a PC. Because entitlements and account setups differ, check Microsoft’s current product terms for the specific devices and users involved rather than assuming console sharing carries over to Windows. Home Xbox sharing does not change the underlying question of which platform a purchase covers, nor does it turn a non-Play Anywhere game into a cross-buy.
Choosing between console, PC, and a subscription
Use the entitlement and the way you plan to play—not just the platform name—to decide:

- Choose a Play Anywhere digital purchase when you want one eligible purchase to cover supported Xbox and Windows devices, and the exact game has the badge.
- Check the listing carefully when you want a game on both platforms but it is not marked Play Anywhere; a separate PC purchase may be required.
- Consider Game Pass access when the title is in your selected plan’s catalog and temporary subscription access suits you. Catalog inclusion is not ownership, and access can end if the subscription expires or the game leaves the library.
- Check the PC’s requirements before relying on a PC version, even if the entitlement covers it.
- Account for sharing and simultaneous play. Home Xbox sharing has defined console rules, Windows licensing differs, and one player cannot run the same Play Anywhere game on multiple supported devices at once.
A practical comparison is to ask six questions before deciding: What entitlement are you getting—purchase, Play Anywhere purchase, or subscription access? Which platforms does this particular listing support? Is there a Play Anywhere badge? Will the game’s supported progress and add-ons carry to the other device? How long will access last, especially if it depends on Game Pass? Can the PC meet the publisher’s requirements, and do the sharing rules fit the people and devices you have in mind? Those answers are more useful than assuming that “Xbox” means one universal license.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need an Xbox controller to play on PC?
No controller is required to buy a game, and a PC player may already have suitable input hardware. If you want a controller, Xbox’s accessories catalog organizes accessories by compatibility categories such as Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and cloud. Check the specific controller’s supported devices and connection method; compatibility is product-specific. An Xbox Wireless Controller is an optional accessory, not part of the Play Anywhere purchase entitlement and not a requirement for PC ownership.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Xbox Play Anywhere cost extra?
Xbox’s Play Anywhere FAQ says there is no additional cost for the feature on an eligible digital game. You still need a qualifying game entitlement, such as a purchase or other valid access; the statement does not mean the game itself or a Game Pass subscription is free.

How can I tell whether an Xbox game is Play Anywhere?
Check the exact game’s Xbox Store listing for the Play Anywhere badge and its supported platforms before you buy. Do not rely on the franchise name, another edition, or a PC listing in a different storefront.

Will an Xbox disc give me the PC version?
Do not assume so. Xbox describes Play Anywhere as applying to participating digital games, including qualifying digital codes from participating retailers; its FAQ does not extend the cross-purchase entitlement to discs.
Do my Xbox saves and add-ons work on PC?
For a participating Play Anywhere game, Xbox says supported progress, add-ons, and achievements follow the player across supported devices. This is not a guarantee for every Xbox game or every PC storefront. The same player also cannot sign into the same game on multiple supported devices at once.
If a game is on Game Pass, do I own it?
No. Game Pass is subscription access to a changing catalog. Access lasts while the subscription is active and the title remains in the library; availability and features can vary by plan, region, platform, and time.

Not necessarily. Microsoft documents Home Xbox sharing for games, durable add-ons, and subscription-enabled content on the designated console, while consumables are account-specific. Windows has separate licensing behavior, so check the current terms for your account and devices.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: If you want one Xbox purchase to cover console and PC, confirm the exact digital game has the Xbox Play Anywhere badge, use the same account, and check your PC’s requirements. Game Pass is temporary catalog access, not ownership; discs, household sharing, and games without the badge follow different rules.
