Xbox Game Pass is a recurring subscription, not a game-purchase plan. You can install or stream games included with your tier while you remain subscribed and while each title stays in the catalog. The right tier depends on your device, whether you need console multiplayer, how important day-one releases are, and whether you will use cloud gaming or bundled services.
Xbox changes catalogs, features, regional availability and limits. The figures below are Xbox’s US plan-page claims accessed October 13, 2026; check the live Game Pass overview, plan comparison and checkout for your market.
What Xbox Game Pass includes
Game Pass gives subscribers access to a rotating library of games and plan-specific benefits. Xbox’s rule is simple: access lasts until you cancel or your subscription expires, or until the game leaves the Game Pass library. You do not permanently own catalog games through the subscription. If a title leaves, you must buy it or obtain access another way to keep playing.
The Game Pass catalog page lets you filter by plan and platform and includes a “leaving soon” collection. Use those filters before subscribing if a particular game is the reason you are considering Game Pass.

Download versus streaming
On supported Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, eligible games can generally be downloaded and played locally. Cloud gaming lets you start supported games on compatible devices without installing them, but the title, plan, region and device must all qualify. Cloud sessions still require a suitable internet connection and a supported controller or input method; Xbox sells supported devices separately.
Current Game Pass plans compared
The table uses the current US figures shown by Xbox. “50+,” “200+,” “300+” and “500+” are vendor-reported catalog counts, not permanent guarantees. Libraries and features can change by region, platform and date.
| Plan | Catalog and devices | New releases | Cloud allowance shown by Xbox | Console multiplayer | Notable extras | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games on console, PC and supported devices | No day-one releases | 5 hours per month | Included | In-game benefits | Console players wanting a smaller library and online multiplayer |
| Premium | 200+ games on console, PC and supported devices | Selected Xbox-published games within one year | 10 hours per month | Included | No additional bundle specified on the plan page | Players who want a broader catalog and can wait for selected first-party releases |
| Ultimate | 500+ games | Selected day-one games; Call of Duty titles are excluded from this day-one claim | 15 hours per month | Included | EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics | Multi-device households and players who value day-one access or the included services |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games for Windows | Day-one games | Cloud gaming is not included | Not stated as a console benefit; this is a PC-focused plan | EA Play and in-game benefits | Windows PC players who want downloads and day-one access without console or cloud features |
These counts and cloud-hour allowances come from Xbox’s US plan page as accessed October 13, 2026. Xbox warns that availability and features change, so treat them as current descriptions rather than promises of a fixed catalog.
Which plan should you choose?
If you play only on a Windows PC
Start with PC Game Pass. It is designed around Windows downloads, includes day-one games and EA Play, and does not charge you for console features you cannot use. It does not include cloud gaming, so choose another tier only if you also play on Xbox or a supported streaming device and the additional cost is justified at checkout.

If you have an Xbox and mainly need multiplayer
Essential is the straightforward starting point when a smaller included library is enough. It includes online console multiplayer and the plan page lists 50+ games. Remember that Xbox allows multiplayer for free-to-play games for every Xbox player, so do not upgrade solely to play a free-to-play title online.
If you want more games but can wait for releases
Premium is aimed at players who want a substantially larger catalog and cloud access without paying for Ultimate’s day-one and partner bundles. Its stated release policy is selected Xbox-published games within one year, not immediate access on launch day. That timing is a meaningful trade-off if you follow new releases closely.
If day-one games or several devices matter
Ultimate is the broadest tier. It combines the largest stated catalog with selected day-one games, console multiplayer, cloud access and EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. Xbox specifically excludes Call of Duty titles from the day-one statement, so check each game’s listing instead of assuming every Xbox release arrives immediately.

If cloud gaming is your priority
Compare Essential, Premium and Ultimate by the monthly cloud hours shown for your market. The US page currently lists 5, 10 and 15 hours respectively. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. These are plan allowances, not a guarantee that every catalog game streams everywhere; supported regions, devices and titles vary.

Where you can use Game Pass
Xbox’s comparison page lists downloads and play on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, Windows PCs and supported handhelds. Streaming is listed for Apple and Android phones and tablets, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TVs, Meta VR headsets and a web browser at xbox.com/play. Availability depends on the exact model, region, plan and game.
The official device information reviewed for this guide does not establish model-level compatibility for every handset, television, headset or controller. Before buying hardware for Game Pass, verify the exact model and country on Xbox’s current support pages. A device being in one of the listed categories does not by itself guarantee access.
What you need for a download
- A supported Xbox console or Windows PC.
- An active plan that includes the game and platform.
- Sufficient storage and the normal system updates required by your device.
- Continued subscription access while you play; leaving the service or ending the subscription removes catalog access.
What you need for cloud play
- A plan with cloud gaming in your region; PC Game Pass alone does not provide it.
- A supported phone, tablet, TV, browser, handheld or headset.
- A reliable internet connection and compatible input device.
- A game that Xbox makes streamable in your region and on your device.
How day-one access and catalog changes work
“Day one” means a qualifying game is added to the service on its release date. It does not mean every game from every publisher, and Xbox’s current Ultimate wording excludes Call of Duty titles from that claim. PC Game Pass includes day-one games, while Premium’s stated benefit arrives within one year for selected Xbox-published releases. Essential has no day-one release benefit.

A game can be available for download on one platform but not another, or remain in the catalog in one region after leaving another. Check the game’s plan and platform labels and the “leaving soon” list before starting a long campaign.

Billing, renewal and cancellation
Subscriptions renew automatically by default. Promotional offers can be limited by region and eligibility, may require a payment card, can be taxed, and normally convert to the then-current recurring price when the offer ends. The amount shown in your account-specific checkout is more reliable than a generic price quoted elsewhere.
- Sign in to your Microsoft account and open the Game Pass subscription under Services & subscriptions, or open subscription settings on your Xbox console.
- Select the Game Pass entry and choose the option to manage recurring billing.
- Turn recurring billing off and confirm. Your access normally continues through the period you already paid for.
- Check the next billing date and complete the change before that date to avoid the next charge.
Xbox states that a refund may be requested for the most recent recurring charge when you cancel within 30 days after payment. The stated provision is limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product and is not a universal refund guarantee. Contact Xbox support to check your account’s current eligibility.
How to compare the real cost
Prices vary by country, tax, promotion, account eligibility and timing. Xbox’s public pages can show different localized or cached details, and temporary offers do not establish a stable standard price. Compare the recurring amount displayed at checkout, then value only the features you will actually use.

Common problems and fixes
A game is not available after subscribing
Check the game’s platform and plan filters, your region and the “leaving soon” list. The title may have left the catalog, may require a higher tier or may not be offered on your device.

Cloud gaming is missing
Confirm that you did not subscribe to PC Game Pass alone, that cloud gaming is supported in your region, and that your device appears on Xbox’s current supported-device information. A supported category does not guarantee support for every model.
You were charged after a promotion
Promotional subscriptions normally switch to the regular recurring amount unless recurring billing is turned off. Review the renewal terms in your Microsoft account and disable renewal before the next billing date.
You expected to keep a game permanently
Game Pass access is conditional. If the subscription expires or the title leaves, access ends. Purchase the game separately if you need permanent ownership independent of the catalog.
