An Xbox game code is redeemed to one Microsoft account, so sign in to the account that should own the game before entering it. Microsoft associates the user license for Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games with that account. Game-download codes are not the same as Microsoft gift cards: a gift card adds stored value, while a game code grants a particular product. Microsoft does not publish one universal expiration period for every game code, and region, currency, code terms, account limits, or security restrictions can prevent redemption.
How do Xbox game codes work?
An Xbox game code is a digital token that Microsoft exchanges for a specific game, add-on, subscription, or other product identified by the seller or promotion. The code is consumed during redemption and the resulting entitlement is attached to the Microsoft account used at that moment. That account association is the key practical rule: the code does not remain a transferable object after redemption.

For Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games, Microsoft describes two parts to licensing: a device-based license and a user-based license. The user-based license is associated with the Microsoft account. In everyday use, that means you should check the signed-in Gamertag before selecting the final redemption button. Microsoft’s reviewed support material does not establish a general right to transfer a redeemed game to a different account, so do not redeem on a temporary, child, work, or friend’s account unless that is intentional.

Game code versus Microsoft gift card

A gift card therefore is not a substitute for a game-specific download code. If you need to buy a game later, redeeming a gift card adds money first; it does not grant the game itself.

How do I redeem an Xbox game code?
Use the account that should receive the entitlement, and keep the code’s market and terms available in case Microsoft or the retailer needs to verify them. Microsoft’s support wording is: “To redeem a Microsoft gift card, Xbox download code or token, select Redeem code below, sign in, and enter or paste the code or token value.”
- Choose the receiving account. On the console, app, or browser, verify the Microsoft account and Gamertag currently signed in. Sign out of any account that should not own the game.
- Open Microsoft’s Redeem code flow. Select Redeem code in the Microsoft Store or Xbox interface. Microsoft also provides web redemption at Microsoft.com/redeem; the web route is useful when an app or console flow fails.
- Enter the code exactly. Type or paste the token, omitting spaces only when the interface does so automatically. Check characters that are easy to confuse, such as zero and the letter O.
- Review the product and account. Before confirming, make sure the displayed game or add-on is the item you bought and that the displayed account is the intended owner.
- Confirm redemption. After Microsoft accepts the code, the entitlement is associated with that account. Install the game from the account’s library or Microsoft Store; redemption and downloading are separate actions.
If you discover that the wrong code was purchased, Microsoft’s guidance is to contact the retailer. Do not disclose the full code publicly or send it to an unverified person claiming to provide support.
Do Xbox game codes expire?
There is no universal Microsoft expiration date published for every game-specific Xbox download code. A code can be subject to the printed or displayed offer terms, a publisher promotion, a retailer’s conditions, or a market-specific rule. Check those terms instead of assuming that all codes remain valid indefinitely or that all codes expire after the same number of days.

Microsoft’s US gift-card terms say that non-promotional account balance does not expire. This statement applies to stored value already added to an account; it is not a blanket promise about an unredeemed game-download code.

Promotional account balance
Promotional balance is different. Microsoft says it is subject to expiration under the promotion’s terms. When promotional and regular balance are both present, Microsoft says unexpired promotional balance is used before other balance, with the balance expiring soonest applied first. The exact date and conditions come from the specific promotion.
How to check a code’s own terms
- Read the card, email, receipt, or digital listing for an expiration date or “redeem by” condition.
- Look for wording that limits the code to a promotion, bundle, edition, or market.
- Keep the purchase record. A retailer may need it to investigate an invalid, already-redeemed, or incorrect code.
- Do not infer a game-code deadline from the no-expiration rule for ordinary account balance.
Can I redeem a code from another country?
Possibly, but neither the code nor the account should be assumed to be region-free. Microsoft’s gift-card terms say a currency denomination may be added only to an account registered in a jurisdiction that recognizes that currency. The resulting balance can be used only at participating stores available in the account’s registered jurisdiction. A code sold for one market may therefore fail on an account registered elsewhere, or it may redeem but create an entitlement that cannot be used as expected.
Compare the code’s market and currency with the Microsoft account’s registered region before buying or redeeming. The seller’s listing and the code’s own terms control details that Microsoft’s general gift-card terms do not answer.

Changing the Microsoft account region
Microsoft recommends changing an account’s region only when you are moving long term. It warns that items obtained in one region might not work in another, and account balance does not move between regions. Changing the setting to force a redemption can therefore leave you with an account configuration that causes later purchasing or content problems. Treat a region change as a location change, not as a general workaround for a mismatched code.

Account balance limits that can block stored-value redemption
Microsoft publishes limits for account money. These figures are expressed in US dollars or the equivalent and include country exceptions; Microsoft’s support page was accessed in 2026, and limits can change. They are relevant to gift cards and account balance, not an explanation for every failed game-specific code.

Examples of listed country limits include Australia AUD 1,520, France EUR 150, Hong Kong HKD 8,000, India INR 50,000, New Zealand NZD 5,000, Singapore SGD 1,000, Switzerland CHF 3,000, and Taiwan TWD 10,000. France also has additional 30-day redemption and spending limits. Verify the current Microsoft limits for your country before relying on any figure.
Exceeding an applicable limit can temporarily prevent balance redemption or purchases. A limit does not prove that a particular game code is invalid; first identify whether you are redeeming stored value or a product code.
Why won’t my Xbox code redeem?
Error messages vary, and the official material does not provide one diagnosis for every failure. Work through the checks in this order so you do not accidentally redeem a valid code to the wrong account.

1. Check the signed-in Microsoft account
Confirm the email address and Gamertag shown in the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or browser. If another family member or account is signed in, switch before entering the code. A successfully redeemed code normally cannot be moved simply because the wrong account was selected.
2. Install a requested console or app update
If the Xbox or Microsoft Store says an update is required, update it and restart the redemption flow. An outdated client can prevent the code interface from completing even when the code itself is valid.
3. Try the web redemption page
Use Microsoft.com/redeem in a browser and sign in to the same intended account. This separates an app or console problem from an account or code problem. Carefully review the account and product shown before confirming.
4. Investigate region and currency
Compare the code’s market with the account’s registered region and the currency involved. For gift cards, confirm that the currency is recognized in the account’s jurisdiction and that the account is not at a published balance limit. Do not change regions temporarily just to test a code.

5. Contact the right party
- Incorrect product or wrong code purchased: contact the retailer, retaining the receipt and order details.
- Microsoft redemption error after account, update, and web checks: contact Microsoft Support and provide the exact error message, purchase evidence, market, and account context without posting the full code publicly.
- Stored-value failure: ask support to check currency eligibility, balance limits, promotional terms, or a security restriction.
Other account restrictions to understand
Microsoft’s gift-card terms say balances are non-transferable between people or accounts and that additional restrictions may apply. Microsoft may restrict access to balance or require a different payment method to prevent fraud or unauthorized use. These are policy possibilities, not a diagnosis of any individual account.
The same terms state that violating the agreement can result in suspension or termination of access to the account, balance, or rights to purchase or redeem gift cards or products. A suspension can therefore affect stored value and purchasing separately from whether a game code was correctly entered. Only Microsoft can determine the status of a particular account.
What happens after successful redemption?
The game entitlement belongs to the Microsoft account used during redemption. Sign in with that account to download the game on an Xbox console or compatible Microsoft Store experience. Device licensing can allow use on an associated console under Microsoft’s licensing model, while the user license follows the account; those mechanisms do not create a general transfer right to another person’s account.
