Xbox controllers can connect over Bluetooth, Microsoft’s separate Xbox Wireless connection, or USB. Which option works depends on the controller model and the device you want to use: on a compatible Windows 10 or 11 PC, Microsoft lists all three routes, while supported tablets and mobile devices use Bluetooth.

How do Xbox controllers connect?

The three methods are not interchangeable. Bluetooth pairs wirelessly with supported computers and mobile devices; Xbox Wireless connects to Xbox consoles and can connect to Windows PCs through the Xbox Wireless Adapter; USB provides a wired connection when the cable fits the controller and supports data.

Connection How it works Use described by Microsoft Check before connecting
Bluetooth Wireless pairing over Bluetooth Supported Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS devices, and Android devices Controller model, Bluetooth capability, operating-system version, and game or app support
Xbox Wireless Microsoft’s separate wireless connection method Xbox consoles; Windows PCs using the Xbox Wireless Adapter Whether the target is an Xbox console or the PC has a compatible adapter
USB Wired connection through a compatible cable Windows connection using a compatible USB-C cable for the current standard controller The exact controller’s port and whether the cable supports data

Microsoft describes the current Xbox Wireless Controller as pairing with and switching among Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PCs, Android, and iOS, subject to device and operating-system support. That broad compatibility statement does not mean every controller generation supports every connection method on every listed device. See Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Controller compatibility information.

Can I connect an Xbox controller to a PC with Bluetooth?

Yes, if both the controller and PC support Bluetooth and the PC’s operating-system version and the game or app are compatible. Microsoft lists Bluetooth as an option for supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. It is also an option for supported tablets and iOS and Android devices.

Bluetooth is not Xbox Wireless. It is a standards-based wireless connection; Xbox Wireless is Microsoft’s separate connection method for its ecosystem. Check the exact controller model and device compatibility rather than assuming all Xbox controllers have Bluetooth.

Do I need an Xbox Wireless Adapter?

No—not if Bluetooth or a wired USB connection is suitable for your Windows setup. The adapter is the Windows option for connecting through Xbox Wireless. Microsoft also lists Bluetooth and a compatible USB-C cable as Windows connection choices for the current controller. Consult Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Adapter setup guide for instructions applicable to your adapter and PC.

For an Xbox console, Xbox Wireless is a supported route. For a tablet or phone, Microsoft lists Bluetooth for supported devices; do not assume an Xbox Wireless Adapter is the method for those platforms.

Can I connect an Xbox controller with USB?

Yes, when the cable matches the controller’s port and connects to the device. Microsoft specifies USB-C for the current standard Xbox Wireless Controller. Older controllers may use a different connector, so check the port on your own controller rather than buying a cable based on the current model’s specification. For a working wired connection, the cable also needs to support data, not just charging.

On Windows, a compatible USB-C cable is also required for button mapping with the Xbox Accessories app, according to Microsoft’s controller information. The cable is sold separately.

What should I check if the connection option is unclear?

  • Identify the controller: Check its model and physical port. Current-controller specifications do not establish connector or Bluetooth support for every legacy model.
  • Check the target device: Confirm its operating-system version and support for the connection method you plan to use.
  • Choose the route: Use Bluetooth when the controller and device support it, USB for a wired connection with a compatible data cable, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Xbox Wireless on Windows.
  • Check the game or app: Device-level pairing does not itself guarantee that a particular game or app supports the controller.

For exact compatibility, consult Microsoft’s controller information. Pairing steps vary by controller and device; use the current official support instructions for your model and console or adapter rather than relying on a button sequence intended for another generation.

Why do current controllers have Bluetooth and USB-C?

In a 2020 Xbox Wire interview about the Series X controller, Xbox Senior Designer Ryan Whitaker said, “We’re implementing Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) so that pairing to these devices is much easier.” He also said, “And a USB-C port allows gamers to play and charge with a modern cable that’s more readily available.” Those remarks describe that controller design context, not every Xbox controller generation.
