Xbox backward compatibility is selective: Xbox One runs selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, while Xbox Series X|S runs selected games from those generations plus most Xbox One games. Before buying or installing an older game, check its exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog; not every game from an earlier generation works.

Which Xbox generations work on each console?

Backward compatibility lets a newer Xbox run certain games made for earlier Xbox systems. Support depends on the specific game, not just its original console generation.

Console Earlier games it can play Important qualification
Xbox One Selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games Compatibility is limited to titles in the official catalog.
Xbox Series X|S Most Xbox One games, plus selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games “Most” does not mean every Xbox One game; check the title and any game-specific features.

For an Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game, search the catalog by title or filter by generation. Xbox’s live catalog is the authority for current title-level support. It lists filters for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games, but specific entries may not always appear in every page view. If a title does not show as compatible, do not assume that owning its disc or digital version will make it playable.

That distinction matters when deciding whether to buy an older game. Backward compatibility is not a general hardware setting that unlocks an entire previous console library. It is a list of supported games, so two titles from the same generation can have different outcomes. Check the exact game rather than relying on the console generation, a recommendation for a similar title, or the fact that the game is available in a different format.

How to play a compatible game

Digital games you already own

  1. Confirm that the exact game is included in the backward-compatible catalog.
  2. Sign in to the account that owns the digital game.
  3. On the console, open the Ready to Install area and select the game to download it.

Xbox describes backward compatibility as free for games you already own: there is no separate compatibility fee. This does not make an unsupported game compatible or provide a game you have not purchased. In practical terms, the compatibility feature itself does not require another purchase for an eligible game in your library, but ownership and title support still matter.

If you do not already own the digital game, do not read “free backward compatibility” as meaning the game is free to acquire. Xbox says many games from the previously owned catalog are included in Game Pass, but the reviewed information does not confirm current availability for any particular title. Check the current Game Pass catalog before subscribing or expecting a specific game to be included.

Games on disc

  1. Check that the exact disc title is in the compatibility catalog.
  2. Insert the supported disc into a console with a disc drive. The console downloads the game to play.
  3. Leave the disc in the drive whenever you play; it serves as proof of ownership.

A disc by itself does not guarantee compatibility. The game must be supported, and a digital-only console cannot read physical game discs. The disc is still required after installation, so downloading the game does not remove the need for a drive or the original disc.

Xbox Series S and physical games

Xbox Series S is digital-only and has no physical disc playback. If you want to use Xbox 360 or Original Xbox discs, choose a console configuration with a disc drive and verify that the specific game is supported. Check the configuration rather than relying on a model-family name when buying: the drive is essential for disc-based play.

For a reader choosing between a disc and digital route, the practical decision is straightforward: an owned digital copy can be installed from the account’s Ready to Install area, while disc play requires both a supported title and a drive-equipped console. A disc owner considering Series S should not expect the disc to work by downloading a copy; Series S has no physical disc playback.

Which older games can you play?

There is no safe blanket rule that all Xbox 360 or Original Xbox games run on newer consoles. Compatibility is title-specific, so use the catalog before making a purchase or recommending a game. Xbox announced more than 70 Xbox 360 and Original Xbox additions on November 15, 2021. Examples from that announcement included the Max Payne series, the F.E.A.R. franchise, Skate 2, Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II, Star Wars: Starfighter, and games in the Otogi franchise. Xbox said those additions could be played on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, digitally or by disc. These are historical examples from that announcement, not a substitute for checking present support in the live catalog.

The list above is deliberately a set of examples, not a complete list of compatible games. The catalog is the right place to confirm a specific older title, and a dated announcement cannot establish that every mentioned game is available in every current context. If you are shopping for a particular disc, check that exact game before paying for it; if you already own it, confirm support before planning around a new console.

In the same November 15, 2021 announcement, Xbox called that release the “latest and final addition” to its backward compatibility program. It said it had reached the limit of its ability to add older games because of licensing, legal, and technical constraints. That describes Xbox’s position in 2021; it should not be treated as a current promise about what will or will not change. The reviewed sources do not verify whether that position has changed since the announcement.

What can improve on Xbox Series X|S?

Some compatible games receive technical enhancements, but features vary by title. Xbox identifies FPS Boost, resolution improvements up to 4K, and Auto HDR as possible benefits. Auto HDR can enhance older games originally designed for standard dynamic range on a supported display. Compatibility alone does not guarantee any of these enhancements, and not every title receives every feature.

These are separate kinds of improvement, not a single upgrade that applies automatically to every older game. FPS Boost concerns frame rate; resolution enhancements affect image resolution; Auto HDR enhances the presentation of older SDR games on supported displays. A game may benefit from one feature without receiving the others. Check information for the particular game rather than assuming that the console’s ability to run it also guarantees a higher frame rate, sharper resolution, or HDR.

  • UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.

  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.

Xbox’s November 2021 announcement gives a dated example of how support varied: it said all titles added that day would receive Auto HDR on supported displays, many would get resolution enhancements, and FPS Boost doubled the original frame rate up to 60 frames per second for 11 of the new titles. Xbox also said 26 additional games already in the catalog were enabled for FPS Boost. These figures apply to that announcement, not to the catalog as a whole.

For Original Xbox games, Xbox reported these resolution multipliers on supported displays in that announcement:

Console Original Xbox resolution multiplier reported by Xbox in 2021
Xbox Series X 4×
Xbox One X 4×
Xbox Series S 3×
Xbox One S 2×
Xbox One 2×

Those are figures from Xbox’s November 2021 announcement, and they are not a guarantee that every older game will render at a particular resolution. For a specific title, check whether the catalog or Xbox’s game-specific information identifies FPS Boost, resolution enhancement, or Auto HDR. The report of enhancements for one group of additions should not be generalized into a promise for all backward-compatible games.

Xbox’s current overview says it conducted 500,000 hours of testing and quality-standard work for Series X|S backward compatibility. The overview does not date that figure, so it should be understood as a reported program-wide testing figure rather than a per-game test duration.

Original Xbox features and saves: what is limited?

Original Xbox games run as the original games rather than as remasters. Some original-era online functions and progression features do not carry over to current consoles:

  • Original Xbox Live multiplayer: Unavailable through backward compatibility.
  • In-game marketplaces: Unavailable through backward compatibility.
  • Offline multiplayer and system link: Supported only if the original game supported those modes.
  • Achievements: Original Xbox titles do not gain Xbox achievements through backward compatibility.
  • Original saves: Saves from the original Xbox do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

Xbox says saves created while playing on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud. That is different from importing a save made on the original Xbox. Players should therefore distinguish between a save made on the old hardware and a save created later on a compatible Xbox One or Series X|S: the stated cloud transfer applies to the latter, not to original Xbox saves.

Similarly, compatibility does not restore the original Xbox Live multiplayer service or in-game marketplaces. A title may still support offline multiplayer or system link, but only if those modes were part of the original game. Check the mode you care about before choosing a game or expecting its original online features to work.

Choose based on the game and how you own it

Your priority What to check
Playing a digital game you already own Verify the exact title in the compatibility catalog and sign in to the account that owns it.
Playing older physical discs Verify the title, then use a console configuration with a disc drive. Series S cannot play discs.
Finding a particular Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game Search the official catalog before buying; support is selective.
Improved visuals or frame rate Check support for that game specifically; FPS Boost, resolution enhancement, and Auto HDR are not universal.
Original Xbox online play, achievements, or old saves Confirm the listed limitations before counting on original services, achievements, or save transfers.

For physical-game buyers, a disc-drive Xbox Series X configuration is relevant when older discs are part of the plan, but confirm the exact console configuration before purchase. A specific Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc is only a useful recommendation after its title has been checked in the compatibility catalog. For digital-game owners, focus on title support and ownership on the account rather than on disc hardware.

Xbox says many games in the previously owned catalog are included in Game Pass, but availability changes and is title-specific. Check the current Game Pass catalog rather than assuming that a compatible game is included in a subscription. Backward compatibility, ownership, disc playback, and subscription availability are related but distinct questions: a game being compatible does not by itself mean it is included in a subscription or that you own it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play every Xbox 360 game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S?

No. Xbox One and Series X|S play selected Xbox 360 games, not the entire Xbox 360 library. Check the exact title in the official backward-compatible games catalog before buying or installing it.

Can Xbox Series X|S play Original Xbox games?

Series X|S can play selected Original Xbox games. Support is title-specific, so verify the game in Xbox’s catalog. Original Xbox Live multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility.

Do I need to pay again to play a backward-compatible game I own?

Xbox describes backward compatibility as free for games you already own, with no separate compatibility fee. You still need to own the game, and the exact title must be supported. This does not mean every compatible game is free to acquire.

Can I play an Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc on Xbox Series S?

No. Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. To use a disc, you need a console configuration with a disc drive, and the game must be in the compatibility catalog. Keep the disc in the drive to play after the console downloads the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do backward-compatible games always get better graphics or frame rates?

No. FPS Boost, resolution enhancements, and Auto HDR vary by game. Check game-specific information; compatibility alone does not guarantee any particular enhancement.

Do original Xbox saves, achievements, or online features carry over?

Original Xbox saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S, and Original Xbox titles do not gain Xbox achievements through backward compatibility. Original Xbox Live multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable. Saves made on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud.

Is a compatible game automatically included in Game Pass?

No. Xbox says many games from the previously owned catalog are included in Game Pass, but availability is title-specific and can change. Check the current Game Pass catalog for the game you want.

The Bottom Line

Xbox backward compatibility covers selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games—not every game from those libraries—and most Xbox One games on Series X|S. Check the exact title in the official catalog, match your ownership format to a console that can use it, and treat enhancements and Original Xbox features as game- or feature-specific.
