WWF-Pakistan and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) use Raspberry Pi 4 computers as the local processing core of solar-powered camera traps that can detect predators and send alerts to field teams and nearby communities. The aim is to give herders time to protect livestock and ease the conflict that can follow a predator attack. The Pi is one component in a custom system—not a complete, ready-to-use warning device.

How the predator warning system works

WWF-Pakistan partnered with LUMS’s National Center of Robotics and Automation to develop an AI-enabled Predator Early Warning System. Raspberry Pi Ltd. reports that solar-powered camera traps built around Raspberry Pi 4 single-board computers have been installed in high-risk areas since 2022.

  1. Capture: Cameras take images near grazing areas and livestock enclosures.
  2. Detect: An AI algorithm checks images for snow leopards and other predators, including foxes, wolves, and Himalayan lynxes.
  3. Transmit: A local 4G connection sends information to a central monitoring platform.
  4. Alert: When a predator is detected near a relevant area, alerts can reach field teams and community members.

The Raspberry Pi 4 provides local computing within this setup. Cameras, AI, solar power, batteries, connectivity, monitoring software, and field operations all contribute to the warning service. WWF-Asia’s Natura account also describes solar-powered camera traps connected to an AI-equipped monitoring system, though it does not list the components in detail.

Why an earlier warning matters

A warning is useful if it arrives while people can still act. Herders who learn that a predator is near may be able to move or secure livestock before an attack. That could reduce losses and the pressure to retaliate against wildlife. This is the project’s practical conservation logic; it should not be confused with proof that losses or retaliatory killings have declined.

Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s 15 May 2026 project account says the system has contributed to a reported change in how local people view snow leopards. The account does not give a survey method or quantified attitude result, so this is a reported observation rather than a measured estimate of community-wide change.

The same account says a single predation event can result in “60–70 animals” lost. That is context reported by Raspberry Pi Ltd., not a WWF study or a stated typical loss for each event.

What field testing changed

WWF-Pakistan’s project procurement document describes a pilot in remote snow leopard habitat in the Karakoram-Pamir landscape, with camera functionality tested in summer and winter. It records three practical improvements:

  • Faster notifications: WWF reports that the detection-to-notification delay fell from 12 minutes to less than one minute during the pilot. The document’s publication date is not established, and the figure is not a guarantee for every deployment or network condition.
  • Clearer images: The camera was upgraded after low-resolution images made it harder to distinguish humans from animals.
  • More cold-tolerant power: A redesigned battery addressed battery failure in cold weather.

These changes show why a field warning system depends on more than its processor: image quality affects classification, power must survive local conditions, and the delivery path must be fast enough to be useful.

Where the project is operating—and what expansion means

Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s account, dated 15 May 2026, describes installations since 2022 in high-risk zones near human settlements in Gilgit-Baltistan. It says expansion into additional high-conflict areas in Gilgit-Baltistan is planned, with support from the region’s Forest, Wildlife and Environment Department.

Separately, WWF-Pakistan’s Phase II Conservation Officer terms of reference describes deployment coordination in Gilgit (Gilgit-Baltistan), Chitral (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), and Neelam (Azad Jammu and Kashmir). Those locations appear as intended work and coordination responsibilities; the document does not establish that installations were completed in all three places.

Why local maintenance is part of the technology

WWF-Pakistan’s Community Watcher terms of reference assigns local watchers practical support tasks: helping install equipment, monitoring it, clearing dust and snow from solar panels, removing vegetation from camera views, troubleshooting, and reporting animal movements or possible camera locations. These duties make clear that remote AI hardware still relies on people who know the terrain and can keep equipment functioning.

What the available evidence does not establish

The public project materials describe the system’s design, field iteration, intended benefits, and qualitative community response. They do not establish the number of deployed units, a full bill of materials, public source code or a build guide, exact camera or battery models, or a formal evaluation of conservation impact. They also do not quantify changes in livestock losses, retaliatory killing, or snow leopard populations. The warning system is a plausible tool for reducing conflict, but the documented figures should not be read as evidence of population-level recovery.
