Short answer: use the Warband Bank to move gold between your own characters in the same region, and use the currency interface only for currencies Blizzard marks as transferable. The Auction House and WoW Token exchange are separate markets, while ordinary mail and direct player trade have eligibility rules that vary by situation and are not fully specified by the historical notes commonly quoted online.
Realm, faction, account relationship, region, item binding and the type of value being moved all matter. The safest approach is to identify whether you are transferring gold, an eligible currency, an item, or a WoW Token before choosing a system.
Which WoW system should you use?
These systems are not interchangeable. A Warband Bank transfer is an account-level convenience for your own characters; a currency transfer uses a separate interface; the Auction House is a player market; the WoW Token exchange is Blizzard’s regional service for converting gold and purchased Tokens; mail and direct trade are delivery mechanisms with their own restrictions.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warband Bank | Gold and non-soulbound items placed in the bank | Your characters in one Warband | Warband characters across realms and factions within one region | Gold must be deposited, then manually withdrawn; this is not a universal cross-region balance. |
| Warband currency interface | Only currencies Blizzard allows to be shared | Your Warband characters | Same Warband region | Some progression currencies remain character-bound; some permitted transfers can lose value. |
| Ordinary mail | Mail-eligible items and, where permitted, gold | An addressed character | Depends on the current mail rules and the relationship between characters | Historical notes do not provide a complete current matrix for realm, faction, account or gold eligibility. |
| Direct trade | Trade-window eligible items and gold | A nearby player | Usually constrained by who can interact in-game | Both players must satisfy the current trade requirements; confirmation dialogs do not define eligibility. |
| Regular Auction House | Items listed for sale | Another player through the market | Depends on the Auction House category and region rules | Gold arrives as auction proceeds, not as a direct transfer. |
| WoW Token exchange | A Token bought with gold or a shop-purchased Token listed for gold | Your account’s game-time or balance service | Regional market | A Token bought for gold becomes soulbound and cannot be resold. |
Blizzard describes Warbands as covering the characters, items, collections and progression shared by a player’s Battle.net account, while still limiting the feature to a single region. Read the Warbands preview for that scope.

Move gold between your own characters with the Warband Bank
The Warband Bank is the clearest documented way to move gold among your own alts. Blizzard says players can deposit gold and manually withdraw it across their Warband characters. It also supports access to non-soulbound items and additional bank tabs; those item features are separate from the gold balance.
Deposit and withdraw gold
- Open a bank at a supported banker or Warband Bank access point.
- Choose the Warband Bank rather than an individual character bank.
- Deposit the amount of gold you want to make available to the Warband.
- Log in to the destination character, open the same Warband Bank and manually withdraw the required amount.
The destination character does not need to be on the same realm or faction as the character that deposited the gold, provided both belong to the same Warband and region under Blizzard’s Warband rules. The feature should not be read as a way to move gold between different regional Battle.net groupings.
Because withdrawals are manual, a deposit does not automatically appear in a character’s personal wallet. If an alt cannot see the funds, check that it is in the same Warband and region and that you are viewing the Warband tab rather than the character’s ordinary bank.

What the Warband Bank does not do
- It does not make every currency a shared gold-like balance.
- It does not establish cross-region transfers.
- It does not make soulbound items transferable.
- It does not send gold directly to another player’s account.
Blizzard’s feature announcement, Get the Band Together for Warbands, documents the deposit-and-withdraw model.
Transfer currencies only when the interface allows it
Eligible currencies move through the currency interface, not by treating them as ordinary gold. Blizzard explicitly warns that many currencies remain non-transferable because they represent character-based progression. A currency intended for a character’s primary use may also permit transfer with a loss.
How to check a currency
- Open the in-game currency window on the character holding the currency.
- Select the currency and look for the available transfer or Warband-sharing control.
- Review the destination character and the amount the interface will deliver.
- Confirm only after checking whether the displayed amount is reduced by a transfer loss.
If no transfer control is displayed, treat that currency as character-bound. Do not attempt to substitute mail, trade or the Auction House; those systems cannot bypass a currency’s binding rules. The scope and exceptions are described in Blizzard’s Warbands preview.
What is known—and not known—about mail and direct trade
Mail and trade are often described with rules that come from different expansions. A September 10, 2013 Patch 5.4 note said cross-realm mail could send account-bound items to another character on the same account, but not other items or gold. That is useful historical context, not a complete description of how every current mail scenario works.
The same caution applies to direct trade. A Patch 7.1 note documented a confirmation dialog when sending gold or items through mail and trade; it did not define today’s realm, faction, account or transaction limits. See the historical notes at Patch 5.4 and Patch 7.1.

Practical checks before mailing or trading
- Confirm whether the recipient is your own character, another player on the same account, or an unrelated account.
- Check whether the item is soulbound, account-bound or otherwise restricted.
- Verify the destination realm and faction in the recipient field or trade window.
- Read the confirmation dialog, including the exact gold amount and item list, before accepting.
- If the game rejects the transaction, do not infer a universal rule from one failure; the restriction may apply only to that item, character relationship or realm combination.
Because the cited official material does not establish a single current matrix for ordinary mail and direct trade, avoid relying on old statements such as “cross-realm mail never works” or “all same-account mail is allowed.” Use the current in-game result and Blizzard’s current support documentation for a transaction-specific answer.
How the regular Auction House handles gold
The regular Auction House is an indirect way to move gold. You list an eligible item, another player buys it, and the resulting proceeds become available through the Auction House collection or mailbox process used by that market. You are not transferring a wallet balance to a chosen character; you are completing a sale in a market.
When an Auction House sale makes sense
- You need to sell an item to another player rather than hand over gold directly.
- The characters are not suitable for a Warband Bank transfer.
- You accept that the item must be marketable and that the final proceeds depend on the listing and sale rules shown in-game.
What the Auction House cannot replace
It cannot convert a character-bound currency into transferable gold, override soulbound item restrictions or guarantee that a particular buyer will purchase your listing. It is also not the WoW Token exchange: Tokens follow a separate regional market and binding model.

Blizzard documents a region-wide WoW Token exchange. A player who buys a Token with gold pays the currently displayed regional price, receives the Token through the mailbox and can redeem it for game time. Once bought with gold, that Token becomes soulbound and cannot be resold.

Buying a Token with gold
- Open the WoW Token interface from the game’s shop or Token entry point.
- Review the live regional gold price displayed at that moment.
- Confirm the purchase with gold.
- Retrieve the Token from the mailbox if the interface directs you there.
- Redeem it for the game-time option shown by Blizzard.
Listing a shop-purchased Token
A Token purchased with real money can be listed for gold through the Token exchange. Blizzard says the quoted gold amount is locked once the Token is listed. A Token can only be sold once; it is not an item that can circulate through repeated player-to-player trades. Blizzard’s Token FAQ states, “No, each WoW Token can only be sold once.” The conversion details are in Trade a WoW Token for Battle.net Balance.
Why the Token price changes
Token pricing is dynamic and connected to regional supply and demand. No single permanent gold price should be assumed: use the value displayed in the Token interface when you transact. The Token exchange is regional, so it should not be treated as a cross-region gold-transfer mechanism.

Blizzard’s July 23, 2015 update recorded the following limits:
| Limit in the 2015 announcement | What it covered | Status of the evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Tokens per week | Tokens purchased with real money for sale on the Auction House | Historical figure from July 23, 2015; not verified here as a current limit. |
| 36 Tokens per 24 months | Tokens purchased with gold | Historical figure from July 23, 2015; do not assume it remains current. |
| 10 Tokens in inventory | Maximum held across the Battle.net account | Historical figure from July 23, 2015; current enforcement was not established. |
Read the original announcement at WoW Token – Additional Details. The dates and wording matter: these numbers describe Blizzard’s 2015 policy, not a guaranteed rule for the current game. Check the live Token interface or current Blizzard support before planning a purchase around a limit.

If the gold is for your own alt
Use the Warband Bank first. It is the documented path for manual cross-realm and cross-faction access among Warband characters inside one region.
If the value is a currency rather than gold
Open the currency interface and use its transfer control only when present. A missing control means the currency is not available for that transfer; a reduced destination amount means the game has applied a stated loss.
If another player must receive an item or gold
Check the current mail or trade eligibility for that exact character and item. If those mechanisms reject the transaction, an Auction House sale may be appropriate for an eligible item, but it is not a workaround for soulbound or character-bound value.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes and recovery steps
- Expecting Warband gold to appear automatically: log in to the destination character and withdraw it manually from the Warband Bank.
- Trying to transfer every currency: check for the currency-interface control; progression currencies may remain bound.
- Using a historical mail rule as a current guarantee: treat Patch 5.4 as historical context and verify the transaction in the current client.
- Confusing the regular Auction House with the Token exchange: ordinary listings sell items; the Token exchange handles Tokens and game-time redemption.
- Assuming a Token bought with gold can be resold: it becomes soulbound after the gold purchase.
- Planning around the 2015 Token caps: those figures are dated; confirm any current limit before buying.
