A worker honeybee’s stinger combines barbed parts that gain purchase in tissue with moving lancets and valves that help deliver venom. Its motion is saw-like in the sense that alternating strokes can advance the apparatus incrementally; it is not a literal saw blade. Here’s how the parts work together in Apis mellifera.
How is a honeybee stinger built?
The shaft has a central stylet and two lancets that slide along its sides. A rail-and-groove arrangement interlocks the parts while allowing the lancets to move relative to the stylet. The lancets carry barbs that point backward, toward the base of the stinger. The stylet and lancets together form the passage through which venom travels.
A 2023 functional-anatomy study combined high-speed filming, scanning electron microscopy, micro-CT, and earlier literature to examine the worker honeybee stinger. Its authors describe the two lancets moving in alternating, or antiphase, strokes in preliminary high-speed video analysis. Read the study.

Why are bee stingers barbed?
As one lancet retracts, its rearward-facing barbs can catch in tissue. That anchoring gives the other components a point of purchase to move forward. Alternating strokes can therefore inch the shaft deeper, rather than requiring the whole stinger to advance in one motion. The barbs aid anchoring and penetration; they are not the venom pump.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The paper describes the action this way: “To penetrate tissue, the lancets protract and retract past the tip of the stylet in an alternating fashion, gradually propagating deeper over several strokes.” The saw analogy captures the barbs’ catching action and the incremental advance, but the mechanism is a coordinated biological motion, not a toothed blade.
How does a bee stinger pump venom?
Venom is stored in a sac and moves through the passage formed by the stylet and lancets. Valves associated with the lancets help drive that flow. The University of California, Riverside’s account of the honeybee sting mechanism describes a valve-and-piston action at the moving lancets’ proximal ends.

In the 2023 anatomical study, venom was observed seeping between the lancets along the portion inserted into tissue, rather than emerging only from the extreme tip. The authors interpret their valve observations as supporting active pumping by the lancet valves. That broad mechanism is supported by the study, while the authors note that more detailed kinematic analysis is needed to establish the precise motion.

A worker honeybee’s sting can lodge in a mammal’s skin and detach from the bee. The separated apparatus retains muscles, a nerve ganglion, and the venom sac, allowing it to continue moving and delivering venom after detachment. This describes the worker honeybee sting in that situation; it should not be generalized to every bee species or every target.

How much venom does a honeybee sting deliver?
The 2023 paper, citing earlier literature, reports approximately 1–2 mg of liquid venom for worker honeybees. That is an approximate reported amount, not a guaranteed dose from each sting. The same paper notes that venom composition varies with caste, season, and individual age.

Not necessarily in every experimental setup. A study of Italian honeybees, Apis mellifera ligustica, reported helical, clockwise penetration under its particular experimental conditions. Treat that as a result for that study and setup, not a universal description of honeybee stings.

Stinger structures and behavior also vary across bees and other hymenopterans. The mechanism described here is specifically about worker honeybees, especially Apis mellifera; barbing, detachment, and sting behavior should not be assumed to be the same across all bees.
