For a WordPress website, GEO—generative engine optimization—is best treated as a name for improving the chance that generative search experiences surface or cite your content, not as a proven replacement for SEO. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google’s guidance is to keep doing foundational SEO and publish helpful, reliable, people-first content. It does not require a special GEO plugin, AI-only markup, or a new writing formula.

GEO and SEO: what is the difference?

SEO is the work of making pages discoverable, understandable, and useful in search. GEO is a newer, less standardized label for work intended to make content more likely to appear in AI-generated answers. The discovery surface differs: traditional search commonly presents ranked results, while generative experiences synthesize responses and may include links to sources.

For Google’s AI Search features, the practical inputs overlap substantially. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. That is guidance about those Google features, not proof that ChatGPT, Bing Copilot, Perplexity, or every other service follows the same discovery or selection rules. What WordPress site owners should focus on

Make important pages accessible to search

Check that your hosting setup, robots.txt file, and any content delivery network are not blocking pages you want Google to crawl. Use Google Search Console to diagnose technical Search issues. A page that can be crawled is not guaranteed to be indexed or shown; Google explicitly makes no such promise. Google Search Central: AI features and your website

Put essential information in readable text

Make the substance of a page available as text rather than relying on an image, embedded element, or other format that does not clearly convey the information. Add sensible internal links so readers and crawlers can discover related pages. These are useful site practices, not an AI-specific format.

Make content worth citing

Answer the intended reader’s question with useful detail, relevant expertise, and meaningful original information. Where appropriate and genuinely available, add examples or firsthand evidence; do not imply testing or experience that did not happen. Google’s people-first guidance treats experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness as concepts for evaluating helpfulness and trust—not as a single ranking factor or guaranteed checklist. Search-rater ratings do not directly determine ranking algorithms. Google Search Central: Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content

Keep the page experience sound

Continue to address page experience as part of ordinary SEO. Google’s AI-feature guidance points site owners back to foundational Search practices; it does not establish a separate WordPress configuration that guarantees an AI citation. Google Search Central: AI features and your website

Do WordPress sites need a GEO plugin or special markup?

No special schema.org markup is required for Google’s generative AI Search features, according to Google’s 2026 guide. Structured data can still support eligible Search features, but use it only when it accurately describes visible page content and is appropriate for that feature. It is not a GEO switch. Google’s guide also says that llms.txt is not a special mechanism for visibility in Google Search and that adding one neither helps nor harms Google Search visibility. This statement is specific to Google and should not be generalized to other providers. The guide likewise says publishers do not need to break every page into tiny chunks or rewrite content solely for AI systems; there is no ideal page length prescribed for this purpose. Use AI tools carefully when creating WordPress content

AI tools can help with drafting or organizing material, but publication still needs editorial judgment. Verify factual claims and review titles, meta descriptions, structured data, and alt text before publishing. Google warns that producing many pages with generative AI or other methods without adding value may violate its scaled-content-abuse policy. How to measure visibility in Google AI Search

Use Search Console rather than treating a plugin’s GEO score or an isolated citation as proof of performance. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the Web search type in the Performance report. In an announcement dated June 3, 2026, Google said new AI Search reporting and controls had rolled out worldwide as of August 31, 2026; the reporting described there includes impressions and page- and country-level information. Google reported in that June 3, 2026 announcement that AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had more than one billion monthly users. Those are Google’s audience figures, not a forecast of traffic or citations for any individual WordPress site. The announcement also quoted Google Search Ecosystem general manager Mrinalini Loew saying, “With our generative AI Search features, people are more satisfied with Search, and they are searching more often.” Treat this as Google’s stated position, not independent evidence of an outcome for every publisher. A practical WordPress checklist

  • Check that robots.txt, hosting, and any CDN allow intended Google crawling; use Search Console to investigate technical issues.
  • Ensure important page information is available as text and connect related pages with useful internal links.
  • Use structured data only when it accurately matches visible content and supports an appropriate Search feature.
  • Improve usefulness with relevant expertise and original information rather than formatting copy for a speculative AI preference.
  • Fact-check AI-assisted material and its metadata, structured data, and alt text; avoid publishing scaled batches of low-value pages.
  • Review Search Console’s Web performance reporting, bearing in mind that reporting interfaces and controls can change.

What GEO cannot promise

Following Google’s guidance can make a WordPress site eligible for consideration in its AI Search features; it cannot guarantee crawling, indexing, selection as a cited source, or traffic. Nor does Google’s documentation establish how other generative answer services discover and choose sources. Treat claims that a particular plugin, markup, file, or writing trick guarantees citations with skepticism unless the provider documents evidence for that specific service.
