Wireless gaming controllers scan buttons, sticks and triggers, encode the changes as input data, and send that data by radio to a console, computer, phone or other host. The host then translates the received data into a controller format that the operating system and game understand. The radio may be Bluetooth, a console maker’s own wireless system, or a controller-specific 2.4 GHz link that uses a USB receiver.
Those labels are not interchangeable. Bluetooth compatibility depends on the controller, host, operating-system version and supported features. The phrase 2.4 GHz identifies a frequency band, not a universal protocol, so a receiver designed for one controller cannot automatically work with another. Choosing the right connection therefore starts with the exact controller model and target device, not with the frequency number alone.
What happens when you press a button
1. The controller samples its controls
Inside the controller, switches, analog-stick sensors and trigger sensors report their current states to a processor. When a button changes from released to pressed, or a stick moves, the controller builds an input report containing those changes. The exact sampling rate, packet format, error handling and radio scheduling vary by manufacturer and model; there is no single packet design shared by every wireless gamepad.

2. The active radio link carries the report
The controller transmits over whichever mode is selected: Bluetooth, a platform-specific radio connection, or a proprietary link to a supplied USB dongle. A dongle is a receiver, not a generic translator for every 2.4 GHz product. The controller and receiver must be designed and paired to understand one another.

3. The host exposes controller input to the game
The console, PC or mobile device receives the radio data and presents it through its supported controller interface. The game can then map buttons, sticks and triggers. A successful radio connection does not guarantee every feature will be available: adaptive triggers, haptics, headset audio, microphones, remapping and motion controls can depend on the host operating system and the game.
Bluetooth, console radio and 2.4 GHz dongles: what each term means
| Connection type | What it means | Checks before you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | A Bluetooth-capable controller pairs with a Bluetooth host using a supported profile and the host’s controller implementation. | Confirm the exact model, operating-system version, game support and feature limitations. A Bluetooth radio alone does not guarantee compatibility. |
| Platform maker’s own radio | A console platform can use a separate wireless mode for its console while the same controller also offers Bluetooth for selected PCs or mobile devices. | Check whether you are connecting to the console or to a PC/mobile device, then select the mode specified by the manufacturer. |
| Controller-specific 2.4 GHz dongle | The controller and its USB receiver use a designed-together link in the 2.4 GHz band. | Use the included receiver, or a replacement explicitly documented for that exact controller. Verify USB, operating-system and mode support. |
Bluetooth is a connection method, not a compatibility guarantee
Bluetooth is useful because many computers, phones and tablets already include a Bluetooth radio. Pairing normally involves putting the controller into discovery mode, opening the host’s Bluetooth settings and selecting the controller. The host still needs an appropriate profile and software support. Sony lists minimum operating-system versions for DualSense Edge Bluetooth use—Windows 10 64-bit, macOS Ventura 13.3, iOS 16.4, iPadOS 16.4, tvOS 16.4 and Android 14—and warns that feature availability depends on the device and game. Its support information is at Sony’s wireless-controller guide.
A console radio can coexist with Bluetooth
Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Controller specifications illustrate this split. Xbox Wireless is used with Xbox consoles, while Bluetooth is listed for wireless connections to selected Windows, Android and iOS devices. The page qualifies compatibility by device and operating-system version, so the presence of both radios does not mean every host supports every mode or feature.

2.4 GHz names the band, not a universal standard
Many products operate around 2.4 GHz, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and dedicated controller links. Sharing the band does not make their protocols interchangeable. The 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2, for example, lists supported Bluetooth controller families and explicitly says that 2.4 GHz controllers are not supported. A receiver must therefore be documented for the controller you own, even when both devices advertise 2.4 GHz.
Is 2.4 GHz faster than Bluetooth?
There is no universal answer from the connection label alone. A dedicated receiver can provide a purpose-designed path, but end-to-end response also includes the controller’s sampling and reporting, host processing, game scheduling, display scan-out and any television or monitor processing. The official product material available for these controller examples does not provide a controlled, same-controller comparison of Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz latency.
Microsoft’s explanation of Dynamic Latency Input (DLI) describes one vendor’s system-level work: the controller sends information more frequently and that information is matched with exact game frames. Microsoft also identifies console and HDMI/display changes as part of the wider design. Ryan Whitaker, a senior Xbox designer, said in the company’s March 16, 2020 interview that the controller “remembers multiple devices so switching between them is more seamless.” That statement describes Xbox’s implementation, not every wireless controller.

How to pair and switch a controller
DualSense Edge Bluetooth pairing
Sony’s instructions apply specifically to the DualSense Edge. First-time use on a device requires pairing.
- Turn the controller off.
- Hold the Create and PS buttons for at least three seconds until the controller enters Bluetooth pairing mode.
- On the host, enable Bluetooth and open the list of discovered devices.
- Select the controller’s name and complete the pairing prompt.
Sony says the controller can be paired with up to four devices. Pairing capacity and switching behavior are model-specific, and game or host support can still limit adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, the built-in microphone or speaker and the headset jack.

Xbox controller switching
Microsoft says its Xbox Series controller remembers multiple devices, which makes switching more seamless. The remembered-device feature should not be read as simultaneous connections. Follow the current instructions for the exact model and select Xbox Wireless for a compatible Xbox console or Bluetooth for a listed PC or mobile device.

Using a USB wireless receiver
A dongle is useful when the host lacks Bluetooth, when the controller’s supported console mode requires a receiver, or when the manufacturer’s dedicated link offers features unavailable over Bluetooth. Plug it into a supported USB port, set the controller to its 2.4 GHz or receiver mode, and follow the model’s pairing procedure. Some receivers are permanently paired; others have a documented re-pair process.

What battery and polling figures really tell you
Battery estimates
Microsoft’s up-to-40-hour figure uses standard AA batteries in a preproduction-unit result. Microsoft says actual life varies substantially with headset use, accessories, usage patterns and other factors. It is therefore an estimate under stated conditions, not a guarantee for every owner or connection mode.
Polling rate
A 1000 Hz polling rate means the controller is specified to report at up to that interval under the stated conditions—in HyperX’s case, on PC. It does not prove that a game samples input every millisecond, that the radio always delivers every report on time, or that the display shows the result sooner. End-to-end latency requires a controlled measurement of the complete setup.
Troubleshooting wireless controller problems
The controller is not discovered
- Verify that the controller is actually in Bluetooth pairing mode or the correct dongle mode; normal operating mode may not advertise for pairing.
- Check the host’s operating-system version and the manufacturer’s compatibility page for the exact model.
- Remove an old pairing, power-cycle the controller and host, and repeat the documented pairing sequence.
- For a dongle, confirm that it is the receiver supplied for that controller and that the host recognizes the USB device.
It connects but the game does not respond
- Confirm that the operating system sees the controller before launching or configuring the game.
- Check whether the game supports that controller format and whether a wired, Bluetooth or dongle mode is required for the feature you want.
- On a multi-device controller, disconnect or switch away from another remembered host if the model’s instructions require a single active connection.
Some features are missing
Feature loss is often a support limitation rather than a radio fault. Sony specifically notes that adaptive triggers, haptics, microphone and speaker functions, and the headset jack can vary by device and game. Check the feature list for the exact host and connection mode instead of assuming that a successful pairing enables every function.

How to choose the right wireless mode
- Name the target host. Start with Xbox console, PlayStation console, Windows PC, macOS, phone, tablet, Switch or another device. A controller can support different modes on different hosts.
- Check the exact model’s compatibility page. Verify the operating-system version, console generation, required adapter and supported games or features.
- Choose the documented mode. Use Bluetooth when both controller and host support it and portability matters; use the manufacturer’s console radio or supplied dongle when that is the specified console/PC path.
- Account for features, not just input. If you need haptics, adaptive triggers, headset audio, microphone support or remapping, confirm those features for the chosen host and mode.
- Keep the receiver and its instructions. A controller-specific dongle may be essential for a supported connection and cannot be replaced by an arbitrary 2.4 GHz adapter.
The practical rule is simple: match the controller, connection mode, receiver and host as a documented system. Bluetooth can be convenient, a console maker’s radio can be tightly integrated with its console, and a 2.4 GHz dongle can provide a purpose-built link—but none of those labels alone guarantees lower latency, broader compatibility or full feature support.
