Windows Clipboard History is the built-in Windows + V panel that lets you select recent copied content instead of pasting only the latest item. On current Windows 10 and Windows 11 support guidance, it can list text, HTML and Bitmap content, with a maximum of 4 MB per item and 25 entries. Unpinned entries are removed when the PC restarts, while pinned entries remain. Optional, account-linked syncing can transfer supported content to other Windows devices.
What Clipboard History is—and what it is not
Every time you copy something in Windows, the normal clipboard receives it for an ordinary paste operation. Clipboard History adds a selectable list of recent clipboard items. Pressing Windows + V opens that list, allowing you to choose an older item rather than replacing it with the newest copy.
The feature is part of Windows 10 and Windows 11; it is not a separate app or hardware accessory. Microsoft’s user guidance is documented in Using the clipboard. The first time you open the panel, Windows displays a prompt to turn the feature on. Selecting Turn on enables history while leaving ordinary copy-and-paste behavior available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Clipboard History should not be treated as a complete archive of everything you have copied. It has a fixed entry count, a per-item size limit, specific documented content types and restart behavior. A copied file, password, formatted document or other payload may not appear as a reusable history item in the same way as supported text, HTML or bitmap data.

How to enable and open it
Enable Clipboard History
- Press Windows + V.
- If Windows shows the Clipboard History prompt, select Turn on.
- Copy an item in any application, then press Windows + V again to view the list.
You can also reach the setting through Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. Microsoft changes labels and page layouts between Windows releases, so the wording may differ slightly from one version to another. If the panel opens but contains no entries, copy supported content after enabling the feature and check again.
Use an entry
Open the panel with Windows + V, then select the item you want. Windows inserts the selected content into the active application, subject to that application’s own paste support. Clipboard History does not make an application accept a format it cannot use; for example, a target that accepts plain text may discard HTML formatting.
What Windows stores in the history
Supported formats and size
Microsoft lists three content categories for Clipboard History:
- Text, such as words, numbers and copied code.
- HTML, which can preserve markup or formatting when the destination supports it.
- Bitmap, meaning bitmap image content.
Each item is limited to 4 MB under Microsoft’s current support guidance. The limit applies per item, not to a stated total size for the entire list. Microsoft does not describe Clipboard History as storing every Windows clipboard format, every copied file or an unlimited sequence of entries.
Entry count and replacement
The history list holds up to 25 entries. As new items are copied, older unpinned items are automatically removed when the list reaches that limit. Consequently, Clipboard History is useful for short-term reuse—such as moving several snippets between applications—but it is not a long-term record of your clipboard activity.

| Documented behavior | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Text, HTML and Bitmap content | These are the formats Microsoft explicitly identifies; other clipboard payloads are not guaranteed to appear as history items. |
| 4 MB maximum per item | A larger item may not be retained in Clipboard History even if an application can copy or paste it normally. |
| 25 entries | The list is a recent-item buffer, not an unlimited archive. |
| Older unpinned items removed as new items arrive | Items can disappear through normal use before a restart if they are not pinned. |
Pinned versus unpinned items
Pinning changes how an entry behaves when Windows clears transient history. In the Windows + V panel, use the item’s pin control to keep an entry available. Microsoft says that unpinned history is cleared each time the PC restarts, while pinned items remain.
| Item state | After a restart | When new copies fill the list |
|---|---|---|
| Unpinned | Removed from Clipboard History | Older unpinned entries can be evicted as new items arrive |
| Pinned | Remains in history | Protected from the normal removal of older unpinned entries |
Pinning is therefore appropriate for a frequently reused snippet, address or piece of boilerplate. It is a poor choice for confidential material: a pinned item is deliberately made more persistent than ordinary history and must be removed deliberately.

How to delete one item or clear the list
Delete a single entry
- Press Windows + V.
- Locate the item.
- Open the item’s More options control.
- Select Delete.
This removes the selected entry rather than changing the rest of the list.
Clear clipboard data in bulk
For a bulk clear, use either of these Microsoft-documented paths:
- Start > Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear clipboard data.
- Open Windows + V and choose Clear all.
Microsoft notes that pinned items are excepted from clearing. If a pinned entry remains, unpin it and then delete it, or use the item’s own delete control. Clearing the history does not mean that a copy operation can never be performed again; it removes the retained history items, while normal clipboard use continues when you copy new content.

What happens when the computer restarts
A restart is a defined boundary for ordinary Clipboard History. Unpinned entries are cleared at each restart. Pinned entries persist, so a user who expects a completely empty history after reboot must remove pinned content separately. This behavior is different from a temporary paste buffer that disappears only when another item is copied: history can hold several items during a session, then discard its unpinned list on restart.
The restart rule also explains why a copied item may be visible immediately after copying but absent later without an obvious deletion action. Either a newer set of copies displaced it, the computer restarted, or the item was removed through one of the deletion controls.
Cross-device synchronization: optional and account-linked
Turn synchronization on
In Start > Settings > System > Clipboard, turn on the option for clipboard history across devices. Microsoft’s instructions tie synchronization to the same Microsoft account or work account being used on the participating Windows devices. Synchronization is optional; leaving it off keeps the feature focused on the local device.
Microsoft describes two user choices for text:
- Automatic sync: copied text is synchronized according to the enabled cross-device setting.
- Manual sync: open Clipboard History, select an individual item’s sync control, and choose to send that item. Microsoft’s explanation says the selected text is uploaded to the cloud and synchronized to other devices.
Do not assume every item syncs in every situation
Microsoft’s connected-experiences documentation describes Cloud Clipboard for copying images and text across Windows devices signed in with a work or school account; see Essential services and connected experiences for Windows. That description does not establish that every account type, Windows release or clipboard format receives identical treatment. In particular, the user-facing guidance does not promise universal synchronization of all HTML, bitmap, file or application-specific formats.
| Mode | Transfer beyond the current PC | User action |
|---|---|---|
| Local-only history | No cross-device transfer | Leave clipboard history across devices turned off |
| Automatic text sync | Supported copied text can be synchronized to signed-in devices | Enable cross-device clipboard and use the same eligible account |
| Manual item sync | The selected text item is uploaded and synchronized | Open Windows + V and select that item’s sync control |
Before enabling sync, consider whether the material you copy is suitable for account-linked transfer. Passwords, access tokens, customer records and private messages should not be pinned or synchronized merely for convenience. The documentation explains the controls and supported scenarios, but it does not provide a complete content-filtering guarantee.

Clipboard History and Activity History are different
Clipboard History concerns copied items that Windows presents in the Windows + V panel. Activity History is a separate Windows privacy feature. Microsoft describes Activity History as tracking activities such as apps and services used, files opened and websites browsed; its documentation is at Windows activity history and your privacy.
That distinction matters when interpreting privacy settings or investigating what Windows retained. Activity History’s description is not evidence that Clipboard History stores a log of every application, file or website associated with a copy. Conversely, turning off or clearing one feature should not be assumed to clear the other. Manage Clipboard History from the Clipboard settings and Windows + V panel, and treat Activity History as a separate control surface.
What the public documentation does not tell you
Microsoft’s support pages establish the visible limits and controls described above, but they do not specify every implementation detail. The reviewed guidance does not state:
- the exact local disk path used for clipboard data;
- the internal database or file format;
- the encryption design for stored clipboard content;
- how long synchronized data remains in Microsoft’s cloud after removal or device disconnect;
- whether arbitrary sensitive content is automatically filtered before synchronization; or
- whether every application-specific clipboard format is retained.
Those omissions are boundaries on what can be responsibly concluded from the user documentation. They are not proof that the data is unprotected, nor proof of a particular retention or encryption policy. If your organization needs those details, consult the current Microsoft privacy, security or enterprise technical documentation that applies to its account and Windows release rather than inferring them from the Clipboard History interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePractical ways to use it safely
For temporary work
- Use Windows + V to move several short text snippets between applications.
- Expect the list to top out at 25 entries and to lose unpinned items after a restart.
- Delete an entry immediately when it is no longer needed instead of waiting for automatic removal.
For a reusable snippet
- Pin only content that you intentionally want to survive restarts.
- Keep the snippet within the documented 4 MB per-item limit.
- Unpin and delete it when it becomes obsolete.
For multiple Windows devices
- Use the same eligible Microsoft or work account on each device.
- Enable cross-device clipboard only when account-linked transfer is acceptable.
- Choose automatic text synchronization or manually sync individual text items, depending on how much content should leave the current PC.
- Do not assume that a format or account scenario not explicitly described by Microsoft will synchronize identically.
Troubleshooting common surprises
The panel is empty
Open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and verify that Clipboard History is enabled. Copy a supported text, HTML or bitmap item, then reopen Windows + V. An item that exceeds 4 MB, uses an unsupported or application-specific format, or was never copied after enabling the feature may not appear as expected.

An older item disappeared
Check the two documented removal causes: the 25-entry limit can evict older unpinned items as new copies arrive, and a restart clears unpinned history. Pin important non-sensitive content if it must survive a restart.
A pinned item remains after “Clear all”
Microsoft’s clearing behavior exempts pinned items. Unpin the item, then delete it from the Windows + V panel, or use its More options menu and select Delete.
An item is not visible on another PC
Confirm that cross-device clipboard is enabled, that both devices use the same eligible Microsoft or work account, and that the item is a supported type. For manual synchronization, the item must be sent using its item-level sync control. Microsoft’s documentation does not guarantee identical synchronization for every format, account type or Windows release.

The short answer
Windows Clipboard History is a recent-item list, not a permanent clipboard archive. It documents support for text, HTML and bitmap content up to 4 MB per item, retains up to 25 entries, removes unpinned history on restart, and keeps pinned items until you remove them. You control individual deletion and bulk clearing from Windows + V or Clipboard settings. Cross-device transfer is an optional, account-linked feature with automatic and manual text-sync choices. The public support pages explain these controls but leave the exact local storage path, encryption implementation and complete cloud-retention behavior unspecified.
