Water will not flow across the Moon in rivers or streams. Lunar “flow” means individual molecules moving between soil grains, sunlit and shaded patches, and the Moon’s extremely thin exosphere. As temperatures change, some molecules can leave the surface, travel, and settle again in colder places.
What “flow” means on the Moon
The Moon has no thick atmosphere to spread heat across its surface, and there is no ordinary wind or rain to carry water. Instead, changes in sunlight and temperature can move water molecule by molecule. A molecule may detach from a grain of lunar soil, hop across the surface, or enter the exosphere—the sparse region of particles above the ground—before returning to the surface.
NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) detected ultraviolet signals that change with local time and terrain. The findings support a dynamic cycle of adsorption, when molecules attach to soil grains, and desorption, when they leave those grains. The NASA-hosted study interpreted the signal as involving water molecules in the uppermost regolith at less than 1% of a monolayer; that describes the study’s interpretation of a surface signal, not a total inventory of lunar water. How molecules can move between warm and cold places
Temperature-driven release and return
When a patch of lunar ground warms, some molecules attached to its grains can desorb. They may move by hopping from one spot to another or enter the exosphere, then stick to a colder surface as local conditions change. This is transport at molecular scale, not a stream of liquid water.

The LRO/LAMP study found that the observed signal did not show the expected decrease while the Moon was in Earth’s magnetotail, where the solar-wind proton source is absent. The authors therefore favored migration as an explanation for the observed distribution over a steady, immediate supply from the solar wind. This does not establish a single source or route for all lunar water.
Small shadows and mobile frost
Rocks and crater rims cast small shadows that can create cold pockets beside sunlit terrain. A NASA/JPL-described model proposes that frost can accumulate or persist in these shadows during the lunar day. As the Sun’s angle changes, a patch of frost may be exposed; molecules can then enter the exosphere and settle in other cold shadows. The model explains a plausible way frost could move, but it is not a direct observation of particular molecules traveling between named locations.

NASA/JPL gives an illustrative contrast of about −210°C in shaded spots and up to 120°C in nearby sunlit areas. Those figures show how sharply different temperatures can occur close together on the Moon. JPL scientist Björn Davidsson summarized the difference between forms of lunar water this way: “Frost is far more mobile than trapped water.” NASA/JPL’s explanation of the shadow model describes the proposed mechanism.
Water, frost, ice, and hydration are not interchangeable
Claims about lunar water refer to several different things. Water molecules may be adsorbed onto the uppermost soil grains; water or hydroxyl may be bound in lunar materials; and ice or frost may persist in very cold regions, including permanently shadowed polar craters. A hydration signal is evidence of hydrogen-bearing material, but it is not automatically proof that every detected signal is H₂O.

Earlier remote observations could not always distinguish hydroxyl (OH) from water (H₂O). NASA says the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) later confirmed H₂O in sunlit areas. In its 2020 explanation, NASA compared the amount detected in lunar soil by SOFIA with the Sahara Desert, saying the desert has 100 times as much water. That comparison concerns the SOFIA-detected lunar soil water; it is not an estimate of every water reservoir on the Moon. NASA’s overview of water on the Moon discusses the distinction.

Orbital hydration measurements are challenging to interpret because reflected light depends on the lunar surface as well as its composition. LAMP research scientist Michael Poston told NASA in 2019: “Lunar hydration is tricky to measure from orbit, due to the complex way that light reflects off of the lunar surface.” The evidence supports mobility and multiple possible forms of water, but it does not settle the Moon’s total water inventory, exact distribution, origin, or the fraction that could be accessed or extracted.

Lunar Trailblazer was designed to map the forms and distribution of lunar water with a water-sensitive imaging spectrometer and a thermal mapper. NASA/JPL reports that the mission ended on July 31, 2025, after communications were lost following its February 26, 2025 launch; it is not an operating source of new measurements.
