Wildlife managers can monitor small mammals with remote cameras and track tubes, collecting observations or footprints without capturing or handling the animals. Cameras can show presence, activity, habitat use and behavior; track tubes record footprints and seasonal activity. Both are best described as low-disturbance methods, not impact-free ones: installation, repeated visits, lights, scent, ink and bait can still affect animals or attract non-target species.

When a project requires live capture, welfare planning becomes part of the study design. Trap numbers must match the team’s checking capacity, inspection intervals must reflect the species and field conditions, and there must be a plan for non-target animals. The right method depends first on the question being asked, then on the habitat, legal jurisdiction and team’s ability to service equipment safely.

What “without disturbing” means in a small-mammal survey

In this context, “without disturbing” means avoiding unnecessary capture, handling and landscape disruption while still obtaining useful evidence. It does not mean that an animal will never notice equipment or change its behavior. A camera may be visible, a track tube may contain bait and ink, and field crews must visit sites to install, check or remove equipment.

The National Park Service (NPS) describes motion-, heat-triggered and timed-interval camera traps as tools for studying species presence or absence, diversity, community composition, activity patterns, habitat selection and behavior with minimal landscape disturbance and without handling animals. Its Small Mammal Field SOP also warns that placement, lighting and bait need deliberate safeguards.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Installation can alter a site. Clearing vegetation, moving cover or repeatedly walking the same approach can disturb the very habitat being measured.
  • Lighting can matter. Flash and sensor lights may disturb light-sensitive species. NPS calls for settings that avoid harmful or disturbing light, and says white flash requires justification to the NPS Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • Attractants change the observation context. Bait may increase detections but can also draw non-target animals or alter normal movement.
  • Visits have a cost. Every approach to a station adds noise, scent and trampling, so servicing schedules should be no more frequent than the project requires.

A defensible survey therefore states what disturbance it is trying to avoid, what residual effects are possible and how the team will reduce them.

Choose the method by the question

No single device answers every monitoring question. The table below separates the evidence each method produces from the handling and welfare burden it creates.

Question Suitable method What the record contains Handling and disturbance profile
Is a species present at a site? Remote camera Images or video showing detections over the deployment period No planned capture or handling; placement, lighting and bait still require care
When is an animal active, and where does it use habitat? Remote camera Time-stamped activity, habitat-use and behavior observations Low physical disturbance when equipment is secured and lighting is appropriate
Can animals be detected through footprints? Track tube or tracking tunnel Ink footprints on cardstock as animals pass through No handling; bait and the tube itself can influence movement
How does activity change by season? Track tubes, with consistent repeated deployment Seasonal footprint records linked to emergence, torpor, reproduction, recruitment or local colonization and extinction Low disturbance, but the same bait and inspection issues remain
What is the relative abundance of rodents or mustelids? Tracking tunnels Comparable tracking records used as an index rather than a census No capture is required; method selection and consistent deployment are important
Does a particular individual need to be measured, marked or examined? Live capture, if justified Direct measurements or handling-based information Highest welfare and labor burden; trap choice, checks and non-target response become central

The New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) lists small-mammal tracking tunnels for estimating the relative abundance of rodents or mustelids and provides decision trees and comparison tables for matching methods to monitoring objectives. A footprint record should not be presented as individual identification unless the specific method has been validated for that purpose.

How to use remote cameras with minimal disturbance

Remote cameras are the broadest non-capture option because one deployment can document presence, absence, community composition, activity timing, habitat selection and behavior. They are particularly useful when the project needs repeated observations over time but cannot justify handling animals.

1. Define the observation before choosing settings

Decide whether the primary output is detection, activity timing, habitat use or behavior. A presence survey may need a trigger that records an animal passing a point. A behavior study may need a field of view and interval that capture more of the surrounding habitat. A timed-interval mode can supplement motion or heat triggers when animals are difficult to trigger consistently.

2. Place and secure the unit carefully

Mount the camera so it cannot fall, swing or point into the ground as weather changes. Avoid unnecessary cutting or rearrangement of vegetation. Aim at a travel route, opening or other feature relevant to the question, while preserving the site’s normal cover. The NPS procedure calls for secure placement and settings that avoid harmful or disturbing flash and sensor lights.

3. Select lighting that does not create an avoidable disturbance

Use a configuration appropriate for the species and light conditions. Light-sensitive animals may react to visible illumination, so do not treat a bright flash as a default. NPS specifically says white flash needs justification through its IACUC process. If a project cannot explain why that setting is necessary, choose a less intrusive option or redesign the observation.

4. Treat bait as an experimental variable

Bait can improve the chance of a detection, but it also changes the encounter from an unprompted observation to an attractant-assisted one. Keep bait use consistent when comparisons depend on comparable effort, document where it was used and avoid quantities or placements that draw unwanted non-target animals. If the question is natural movement, consider whether bait would undermine the inference.

5. Plan servicing to limit site visits

Set a retrieval and inspection schedule that protects data without creating unnecessary traffic. Record the camera location, orientation, trigger mode, lighting mode, bait status and any signs that the installation altered the site. Remove equipment and bait when the observation period ends. Under the NPS process, camera activities may require a field study or general submission, so confirm the applicable institutional review and permits before deployment.

What camera records can and cannot show

A sequence of images can establish that an animal was detected, when it was active and how it used the available habitat. Multiple species can be recorded at one station, supporting community-composition observations. A blank sequence does not by itself prove that a species is absent; it may reflect placement, trigger settings, weather, vegetation or limited detection opportunity. Report the deployment conditions alongside any absence conclusion.

How track tubes and tracking tunnels collect evidence

A track tube is a passage containing an ink pad and cardstock. Bait encourages an animal to enter; as it walks through, it leaves footprints on the cardstock. The animal is not captured or handled, and the record can be retained for later identification or comparison.

Set up the tube around a defined monitoring question

Place tubes where the target animals are expected to move, while avoiding unnecessary habitat alteration. Use the same tube design, bait approach and deployment logic when the goal is to compare sites or seasons. Label each card with the station and deployment information so a footprint can be interpreted in context.

Read footprints as detection records

The output is a footprint record, not an automatically identified individual. The value lies in repeated, consistent detections. NPS notes that seasonal records can help assess activity associated with emergence, torpor, reproduction, recruitment and local colonization or extinction. Those interpretations require a time series and careful attention to how effort was kept comparable.

Use tracking tunnels for relative-abundance monitoring

DOC identifies small-mammal tracking tunnels as a method for estimating the relative abundance of rodents or mustelids. “Relative” is important: the result is an index for comparing monitoring units or periods under a consistent protocol, not a direct count of every animal in the landscape. Consult the DOC method-selection decision trees when the objective, species or habitat makes another approach more appropriate.

Control the disturbance introduced by bait and repeated visits

Bait can attract non-target species and may change movement around the tube. Keep its use documented and consistent, protect the tube from weather and inspect it often enough to preserve readable cards without making unnecessary approaches. If tracks are smudged, washed out or obscured, record that limitation rather than treating an unreadable card as a negative detection.

When live capture is necessary

Some studies need information that remote observation cannot provide, such as direct measurements or examination. Live capture should then be treated as a welfare-critical operation, not simply as another sampling device.

Match trap numbers to checking capacity

The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) guidance says the number of traps must stay within the monitoring team’s capacity. A large array is not responsible if staff cannot inspect it under the expected weather, terrain and travel conditions. Reduce the number of active traps or redesign the schedule when the team cannot maintain the required checks.

Set checking intervals for the species and conditions

ASM states that checking intervals depend on the species, trap design, weather, season, terrain and staffing. Very small mammals, especially shrews, have high metabolic demands; the guidance gives an example in which they may require checks as frequently as every 1.5 hours. That interval is not a universal rule for every species or trap. It illustrates why a schedule must be justified for the animal and conditions actually involved.

Protect animals from confinement and weather

Use a species- and situation-appropriate trap, provide weather protection and monitor in a way that minimizes time confined. The Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes calls for suitable traps, monitoring that minimizes confinement, reduced non-target capture and a plan for captured non-target animals. A field protocol should state who will respond, how quickly and what will happen if the target species is not the animal found in a trap.

Do not transfer one jurisdiction’s schedule to another

Local rules can be more specific than general guidance. New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries says live-capture traps ordinarily require manual inspection within 12 hours after sunrise each day; where remote monitoring is used, manual inspection is required within 24 hours after capture. Those requirements apply to the jurisdiction and trap context described by MPI and should not be generalized to other countries or projects. Read the MPI traps and devices guidance before relying on them.

A practical low-disturbance survey workflow

  1. Write the question in measurable terms. Specify whether the outcome is presence, activity, behavior, footprints, seasonal change or relative abundance.
  2. Choose the least invasive method that can answer it. Start with a camera or track tube when handling is not required. Reserve live capture for information those methods cannot provide.
  3. Check approvals and local rules. NPS notes that camera activities may need a field study or general submission. Other institutions, land managers and jurisdictions may require permits or animal-care review.
  4. Design the station before entering the field. Decide placement, trigger or tracking configuration, lighting, bait, weather protection, labeling and service intervals in advance.
  5. Plan for non-target animals. Bait can attract species outside the target group, and live traps can capture them. Define how the team will recognize, release or otherwise manage those encounters.
  6. Minimize the footprint of each visit. Use established approaches where possible, avoid unnecessary vegetation clearing, keep equipment secure and limit visits to those needed for animal welfare and data quality.
  7. Record effort and conditions. Preserve station identity, operating settings, deployment dates, bait use, weather problems and unreadable or missing records. Without this context, a non-detection is difficult to interpret.
  8. Review the protocol during the project. If light, bait, equipment movement or checking capacity is creating avoidable harm or unreliable data, pause and adjust the design rather than continuing unchanged.

Common failure modes and practical fixes

Camera records are empty

First check whether the camera was aimed at a relevant travel feature, whether motion or heat triggering was appropriate, whether the field of view was blocked and whether lighting discouraged the target. Reposition or change settings only with the monitoring question in mind, and document the change so records from different configurations are not treated as equivalent.

Bait attracts the wrong animals

Remove or relocate the attractant if it is drawing non-target species, and state clearly in the dataset that bait was used. A camera or tube can still be useful without bait when the objective is natural movement rather than maximizing encounters.

Track cards cannot be read

Weather, moisture, poor ink contact or disturbance around the tube can obscure footprints. Improve weather protection and installation stability, replace compromised cards and mark the observation as unreadable rather than forcing a species assignment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Servicing is taking longer than planned

Reduce the number of active stations, shorten the deployment or add trained personnel. For live traps, never allow the planned schedule to exceed the team’s ability to check animals under the species-specific and jurisdiction-specific requirements.

The method answers a different question than the project claims

A camera image can document a detection and behavior, while a track tube supplies footprints and a relative index. Neither automatically provides individual identity, population size or a complete absence estimate. Reword the objective or add a justified method rather than stretching the evidence beyond what the device records.

How to report results responsibly

Describe the method, deployment effort, settings, bait, lighting, inspection schedule and any changes made in the field. State whether animals were handled. For cameras, report the observation categories supported by the records, such as presence, activity or habitat use. For tubes, report footprint detections and the comparison period or site, making clear when the result is a relative-abundance index. For live capture, include trap type, checking intervals, weather protection and non-target outcomes.

Finally, separate a low-disturbance design from a claim of no disturbance. The strongest monitoring plan is the one that gets the needed evidence while reducing handling, limiting site alteration, avoiding unnecessary light and bait effects, and keeping welfare responsibilities within the team’s actual capacity.
