Wildfire smoke can make outdoor air unhealthy and can seep into a closed building. Closing windows and doors usually lowers exposure, but it does not guarantee clean indoor air: during smoke events, EPA summarizes indoor PM2.5 at roughly 55%–60% of outdoor levels when no portable cleaner is operating, with home-to-home estimates ranging from about 30% to 100%. The most effective response is a sequence: check current conditions, limit smoke entry without creating dangerous heat, establish a cooler cleaner-air room, filter it with compatible equipment, avoid creating particles indoors, and ventilate briefly when outdoor air improves.

What wildfire smoke does to indoor air

Wildfire smoke is a mixture of fine particles, gases and ash produced by burning vegetation, buildings and other materials. The fine-particle fraction, commonly called PM2.5 because particles are 2.5 micrometers or smaller, can travel deep into the lungs. Smoke can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, causing coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing. People with asthma, heart or lung disease, older adults, children, pregnant people and anyone exposed for long periods, such as outdoor workers, need particular care.

Smoke enters through open windows and doors, gaps around the building envelope, leaks around HVAC equipment and fresh-air intakes. Particles can also be carried in on clothing or settle on surfaces and later become airborne again. A newer, tighter home or a home with air conditioning may keep out more pollution than an older, leakier building, but construction age does not tell you the actual concentration in a specific room.

Closed windows do not equal safe air

EPA’s educational summary of studies by Barn et al. (2008) and Xiang et al. (2021) estimates that, during wildfire events, indoor PM2.5 is generally about 55% to 60% of outdoors when doors and windows are closed and no portable air cleaner is running. The same summary reports variation of approximately 30% to 100% of outdoor levels among homes. These figures describe a broad research range, not a prediction for your house, apartment or office.

Indoor air may therefore be less polluted than outdoor air while still reaching an unhealthy level. Indoor sources—cooking, candles, smoking, combustion appliances and resuspended dust—can add particles even after outside smoke declines.

A practical response plan

Use the following sequence whenever smoke is affecting your area. Conditions can change within hours, so repeat the first step throughout the event.

1. Check current air quality and official instructions

  1. Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and your state, local or Tribal air-quality service for current PM2.5 readings, forecasts and smoke movement.
  2. Read local health advisories, school or workplace notices and emergency-management messages. Follow evacuation orders immediately; an air-quality plan never overrides an evacuation instruction.
  3. Plan for the most vulnerable people in your household first. Have needed medicines, water, chargers and transport available before conditions worsen.

A static reading from the morning may not reflect afternoon smoke, a shifting wind or a nearby fire. Use the current official forecast to decide when to close up, when to ventilate and whether to relocate.

2. Reduce smoke entry while controlling heat

  1. Close windows and exterior doors when smoke is present. Keep them closed except for necessary entry and exit.
  2. Set central HVAC and room air conditioners to recirculate if the system has a fresh-air intake. Close or disable the outside-air damper only as the equipment instructions allow.
  3. Use air conditioning, fans that recirculate indoor air and shade to stay cool. Do not point a fan toward an open smoky window.
  4. Keep emergency exits usable. Never seal, block or lock a door or window that must remain available for escape.
  5. If there is no air conditioning and the home becomes dangerously hot, cool the home during a period when outdoor air is cooler and cleaner, then close up and filter again. If you cannot keep the space safe, move to a cooler cleaner-air location or an official shelter.

Heat can become a more immediate danger than smoke. Do not remain in a sealed, overheating home simply to keep the windows closed. Follow local emergency instructions if fire, power loss or extreme heat changes the risk.

3. Designate a cleaner-air room

Choose a room that can be closed off from the rest of the building, is large enough for the people who may use it and can be kept reasonably cool. A bedroom or living room often works better than a kitchen because cooking adds particles. The room is not a sterile laboratory cleanroom; it is a space with lower particle levels than the rest of the home.

  • Close its windows and door while smoke is present, but preserve a safe emergency exit.
  • Place the air cleaner where air can enter and leave freely; do not push it against a wall, curtain or furniture.
  • Keep the room cool with air conditioning or recirculating fans. Watch for heat stress, especially in children, older adults and people with medical conditions.
  • Spend the most time in this room during the smoke peak, while allowing household members to leave safely for water, food, medication or evacuation.

Choosing filtration for the room or home

There are three practical approaches: a portable air cleaner, filtration through a central forced-air HVAC system, and a DIY box-fan cleaner. They can be used separately or together. The right choice depends on room coverage, system compatibility, noise, energy use, replacement-filter cost and how quickly you need protection.

Approach Best fit What to verify Main limitations
Portable air cleaner One bedroom, living room or other defined space; homes without forced-air HVAC Smoke CADR, room size, low-ozone certification, filter availability and cost Usually treats one room; fan noise and ongoing filter expense
Central HVAC filtration Homes with compatible forced-air heating or cooling Whether the blower can handle MERV 13 or the highest compatible rating; correct filter dimensions and fit Does not clean rooms outside the air-distribution system; a restrictive filter can reduce airflow if the system is not designed for it
DIY box-fan cleaner Lower-cost fallback or supplemental room filtration Newer safety-listed fan, high-efficiency filters, airflow direction and sealed connections Performance, noise and safety vary with construction; filters need replacement

Portable air cleaners: size by smoke CADR

For a portable unit, EPA advises a smoke clean-air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. The calculation is:

Minimum smoke CADR = room area (square feet) × 2/3.

For example, a 300-square-foot room points to a smoke CADR of at least 200. Use the smoke CADR value rather than a marketing claim based only on “coverage.” If the room has a high ceiling, open doorway, unusually leaky construction or many occupants, a larger unit or a second unit may be appropriate.

  • Choose equipment certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to minimize ozone emissions.
  • Run it continuously during the smoky period, preferably at the highest fan setting you can tolerate. Lower settings generally move less air.
  • Leave clearance around the intake and outlet, and keep the unit on a stable surface.
  • Inspect the filter. Replace it when the manufacturer’s indicator shows it is loaded, when airflow drops, or when it becomes visibly dirty or smells smoky.
  • Before buying, compare noise at the speed you will actually use, electrical consumption, dimensions, weight and the price and availability of replacement filters.

EPA’s filtration guidance states that portable air cleaners, high-efficiency HVAC filters and DIY cleaners can reduce smoke indoors, but the result depends on room size, leakage, operating time and equipment condition.

Central HVAC: use the highest compatible filter

  1. Check the HVAC manufacturer’s documentation for the maximum filter rating and pressure drop the blower can handle.
  2. Install a snugly fitting MERV 13 filter if the system supports it. If not, use the highest MERV rating the manufacturer or a qualified HVAC professional confirms as compatible.
  3. Confirm the airflow arrow on the filter points toward the blower.
  4. Set the thermostat fan to “On” or another continuous mode, or run it as often as practical while smoke is present.
  5. Inspect the filter more often than you would during normal operation and replace it when loaded.

EPA’s educational summary cites an estimated 50% reduction in indoor PM2.5 from upgrading an HVAC filter and operating the fan continuously, and about a 24% reduction from continuous fan operation with a typical low-efficiency filter. These are study estimates summarized by EPA (Fisk and Chan, 2017), not guaranteed reductions for an individual system. A filter that is too restrictive can damage equipment or reduce heating and cooling; compatibility comes first.

DIY box-fan cleaner: a fallback with variable results

  1. Use a box fan made in 2012 or later with a UL or ETL safety mark, as EPA advises to reduce overheating risk.
  2. Attach one or more high-efficiency HVAC filters, preferably MERV 13 or higher, with the filter airflow arrows pointing toward the fan.
  3. Seal gaps between the fan frame and filters with a suitable method so air cannot bypass the filter media.
  4. Keep the assembly stable, unobstructed and away from water or combustible materials.
  5. Replace filters when they become dirty and stop using the fan if it overheats, smells of burning or operates abnormally.

DIY output varies with fan design, filter area, sealing and room conditions. EPA’s summary of May et al. (2021) reports one example in which a DIY cleaner lowered PM2.5 by about 56% after 90 minutes in a larger room and about 99% within 60 minutes in a smaller room during a smoke event. Those results should not be treated as a promise for every build. A DIY unit may be louder and less convenient than a tested portable cleaner, but it can provide useful filtration when commercial equipment is unavailable or unaffordable.

Prevent new particles inside

Filtration works better when you stop adding pollution. During smoky conditions:

  • Do not smoke or vape indoors.
  • Do not burn candles or incense.
  • Avoid aerosol sprays and other products that disperse fine droplets.
  • Avoid fireplaces and gas, propane or wood-burning appliances unless they are essential and properly vented.
  • Choose low-particle cooking methods. Avoid frying, broiling and other high-heat cooking; use a range hood that vents outdoors only when the outdoor air and building design make that appropriate.
  • Do not vacuum unless the vacuum has a true HEPA filter. Damp-wipe surfaces or mop instead to capture settled dust.

Keep smoke-soiled clothing and equipment away from the cleaner-air room, and wash hands after handling ash. Do not dry sweep ash, which can resuspend particles.

Ventilate when outdoor air improves

Sealing a building is a temporary smoke strategy, not a permanent ventilation plan. When the official air-quality reading and forecast show a sustained improvement, open windows or doors for a limited period, or reopen the HVAC fresh-air intake according to the system instructions. Cross-ventilate only when the incoming air is cleaner than the indoor air. Keep filtration running while flushing the home, then close up again if smoke returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If outdoor conditions improve only briefly, a short airing may not be worthwhile. Watch for a rising smoke forecast, odors, visibility changes and official alerts before opening the building.

What to do if you must go outside

The primary protection is reducing the time spent outdoors and postponing strenuous activity. When exposure is unavoidable, a properly fitted NIOSH-approved particulate respirator marked N95 or P100 can significantly reduce inhalation of smoke particles.

  • Look for the NIOSH approval marking, the model designation and two head straps.
  • Select a size and shape that seals over the nose and under the chin. Follow the package seal-check instructions each time you put it on.
  • Ear-loop masks, bandanas and loose dust masks are not equivalent to a fitted N95 or P100 particulate respirator.
  • A respirator does not remove gases, protect the eyes or make prolonged outdoor exertion safe.
  • Heat, exercise and breathing resistance can make respirator use harder. Pregnant people and those with heart or lung disease should ask a clinician about safe use.

NIOSH-approved respirators are not made in sizes suitable for young children. EPA guidance says children age two and older should wear one only if it fits and they can use it correctly; children under two should not wear respirators. Never force a child to wear a mask that causes distress or prevents safe breathing.

Health decisions and warning signs

Reduce exposure promptly if you develop eye, nose or throat irritation, coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath. People with asthma should follow their prescribed asthma action plan. People with heart or lung disease should follow their clinician’s advice. Contact a health-care provider if symptoms concern you or do not improve after moving to cleaner air. Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting or blue lips.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Symptoms can have causes other than smoke, and an air-quality article cannot diagnose them. The practical decision is to move away from smoke, use the cleaner-air room and seek medical guidance when needed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Relying on a closed window alone: indoor PM2.5 can remain substantial because smoke infiltrates through leaks and ventilation systems.
  • Choosing a unit by room-name marketing: compare the listed smoke CADR with the actual floor area.
  • Installing MERV 13 without checking compatibility: a filter that the blower cannot handle may reduce airflow or damage the system.
  • Running a cleaner only occasionally: continuous operation during the smoke period provides more air cleaning than short sessions.
  • Blocking emergency exits: smoke control never justifies making escape impossible.
  • Using ozone-generating devices: choose low-ozone, CARB-certified portable equipment instead.
  • Creating indoor smoke while trying to remove outdoor smoke: cooking at high heat, candles, vaping and fireplaces can overwhelm filtration.
  • Keeping the house sealed through dangerous heat: move to a cooler cleaner-air place or follow emergency instructions.
  • Treating a DIY result as guaranteed: construction quality and room conditions determine performance.

A quick checklist for the next smoke event

  1. Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local alerts.
  2. Close windows and exterior doors when smoke arrives; set HVAC or room AC to recirculate.
  3. Choose a cool room that can be closed off without blocking emergency egress.
  4. Run a correctly sized, low-ozone portable cleaner, compatible HVAC filtration or a safety-listed DIY cleaner.
  5. Stop smoking, vaping, candle burning, high-heat cooking and other particle-producing activities.
  6. Check filters, airflow and room temperature regularly.
  7. Use a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 only when outdoor exposure is unavoidable.
  8. Ventilate briefly when official conditions are cleaner, and close up again if smoke returns.
  9. Leave for a cooler cleaner-air location or evacuate when heat, fire or official instructions make staying unsafe.
