A 55-inch TV with a standard 16:9 screen is about 47.94 inches wide and 26.96 inches high. Those figures describe the screen, not the television’s full outer dimensions. For a cabinet, stand, or wall installation, check the exact model’s specifications.
What does “55-inch” measure?
The 55-inch figure is the screen’s diagonal: the distance from one corner of the active display to the opposite corner. It does not mean the screen is 55 inches wide.
How wide and tall is a 55-inch 16:9 screen?
For a rectangular 16:9 screen, the width and height follow from the diagonal and aspect ratio:
- Width: 55 × 16 ÷ √(16² + 9²) = approximately 47.94 inches.
- Height: 55 × 9 ÷ √(16² + 9²) = approximately 26.96 inches.
These are geometric calculations for a 55-inch diagonal at 16:9, not measurements of a particular television model. The Panasonic 55-inch-class display specification, for example, lists its 16:9 aspect ratio and bezel information separately, illustrating that screen dimensions and the full set are distinct measurements: Panasonic specification PDF. How much space does the complete TV need?
The outer television can be wider and taller than its screen because of the bezel and chassis. Its depth, stand footprint, and feet spacing also depend on the model. The diagonal calculation alone cannot establish whether a TV will fit a cabinet or whether its feet will sit safely on a stand.
Before buying or installing a set, compare the exact model’s product specifications with the available space:

- Outer width, height, and depth of the TV.
- Stand footprint or the distance between its feet, if it will sit on furniture.
- Whether the set supports the intended wall mount and whether the installation space accommodates it.
No single clearance value applies to every 55-inch TV. Use the dimensions and mounting information for the specific model rather than treating 47.94 inches as the TV’s complete width.
