WhatsApp stickers are images you send in individual or group chats from the sticker tray. You can download themed packs, search by text or emoji, save individual stickers to Favorites, and find recently sent stickers in Recents. WhatsApp also lets you make stickers from your own photos and, where the feature is available, generate stickers from a text prompt with Meta’s AI service.
The important privacy distinction is narrow: WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted. If you choose the broader sticker-search option, the emoji used in that search is shared with WhatsApp and third-party providers so they can return results. That disclosure does not establish every data practice of every provider or make all sticker-related activity private by default.
How do WhatsApp stickers work?
A sticker is an image selected from WhatsApp’s sticker tray and sent as a chat message. Stickers work in one-to-one conversations and group chats. The exact button position and labels vary between Android, iPhone, WhatsApp Web, Mac, and Windows, but the basic sequence is the same.
- Open an individual or group chat.
- Open the sticker tray from the message composer.
- Browse your available stickers or use search.
- Tap a sticker to send it immediately.
Sticker search can use words or emoji. WhatsApp also documents suggestions that can appear when you type a common emoji at the start of a message. The documented trigger is a single emoji; continuing to type dismisses the suggestion. Suggestions and search help you find a sticker without opening each pack one by one.

What the other person receives
The recipient sees the sticker in the conversation like any other message. A sticker is not a link to a separate web page and does not require the recipient to install the pack that you used. The recipient can generally interact with the sticker from the chat, including saving it or viewing its pack information where those controls are available.
Sticker packs: download, organize, and remove them
A sticker pack is a downloadable collection of related stickers. WhatsApp can show suggested packs in its Sticker Store, usually below the packs already on your device. Downloading a pack makes its stickers available in your sticker tray; it does not automatically send anything to a chat.
How to download a pack
- Open any chat and open the sticker tray.
- Open the pack browser or Sticker Store control.
- Review the suggested or available packs.
- Select a pack and choose the download or add option.
- Return to the sticker tray and look under your downloaded packs.
WhatsApp’s help instructions refer to the downloaded collection as My Stickers. The wording and location can differ by platform, so look for the pack-management or store icon if the label is not identical.

Identify a pack’s owner and creator
When you hold a sticker, WhatsApp can show information about the pack’s owner and creator. This is useful when a sticker arrives in a chat and you want to find the rest of the collection. Availability of the information and the exact gesture can differ between app versions.
Reorder or remove packs
Pack management lets you change the order in which collections appear and remove a downloaded pack. Removing a pack affects your local sticker list; it does not erase stickers already sent in chats and does not remove the pack from another participant’s device.
Favorites and Recents are different lists
WhatsApp provides two quick-access areas with different purposes. Favorites is for stickers you deliberately want to keep handy. Recents is a history of stickers you sent recently.

Add a sticker to Favorites
- Open a chat and open the sticker tray, or locate a sticker in a conversation.
- Press and hold the sticker.
- Choose the option to add it to Favorites.
- Open the Favorites section of the sticker tray when you want it again.
On some platforms, the add-to-Favorites command appears in a contextual menu rather than directly in the tray. If you cannot see it, update WhatsApp and try the press-and-hold action from the chat message itself.

Open the sticker tray and select Recents to see recently sent items. Clearing an item from that list is only an organization change. It does not retract a message, remove a copy from a conversation, or uninstall the pack that supplied the sticker.
How sticker suggestions and search find results
There are two related discovery mechanisms:
- Inline suggestions: WhatsApp may suggest stickers after a common emoji is entered at the beginning of a message. Typing more text dismisses the suggestion.
- Sticker search: You can search with text or emoji and browse matching stickers from WhatsApp and third-party providers.
Use a descriptive word when you know the idea you want, such as a reaction or emotion, or use an emoji when the visual meaning is clearer. Search results depend on what providers have indexed and on the language and platform support available to your account.
Are WhatsApp stickers private?
WhatsApp’s published explanation makes two separate statements that should not be combined into a blanket privacy promise.
Messages and calls
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are protected by end-to-end encryption. In that model, people outside the chat, including WhatsApp and Meta, cannot read, listen to, or share the content of those personal messages and calls while they travel between participants. A sticker sent in a personal chat is part of that conversation.

What happens when you search for more stickers
If you choose the broader option to search for more sticker suggestions, WhatsApp says only the emoji used for that search is shared with WhatsApp and third-party providers. Those online sources use the search term to find relevant results. The documented disclosure is specifically about the emoji search input; it is not a statement that all sticker activity, provider logs, account information, or other data is handled identically.

In practical terms, sending a sticker from your existing tray is different from requesting additional results from online providers. If minimizing disclosure matters, use downloaded packs, Favorites, or Recents instead of the broader search function.
What the documentation does not establish
- It does not describe every data practice of each third-party sticker provider.
- It does not say that every sticker-related feature uses exactly the same encryption or processing path.
- It does not provide a universal retention period for a searched emoji.
- It does not make a claim about stickers used in every type of account, business workflow, or integration.
Those limits are why “stickers are completely private” is too broad. The supported statement is that personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted and that the emoji for an explicitly requested broader sticker search is shared with WhatsApp and third-party providers.
Make a custom sticker from a photo
WhatsApp’s current help instructions include built-in custom-sticker creation. You can start with a photo, turn it into a sticker, and add the result to a new or existing sticker pack.

- Open the sticker creator from the sticker tray.
- Select a photo from your device.
- Adjust the automatically prepared image or use the available editing controls.
- Save the result as a sticker.
- Add it to a new pack or to an existing custom pack.
- Send it in a chat or return to the pack later.
Labels and editing controls can vary by Android and iOS release. WhatsApp says custom sticker packs are supported on the latest Android and iOS versions; update the app if the creator is missing.
Technical limits for a custom pack

These are upload requirements, not a promise that every image will look identical on every screen. If an upload fails, check the file size first, then the 512 × 512-pixel canvas and, for animation, the total duration. A pack that exceeds 30 stickers must be split into separate packs.
Publish a pack through an app
WhatsApp also documents packaging custom stickers in an app for publication through Google Play or Apple’s App Store. That is a separate distribution route from making a personal pack inside WhatsApp. Any published pack must use artwork you are legally allowed to distribute and must comply with WhatsApp’s terms. Do not copy characters, logos, photographs, or artwork unless you have the necessary rights.

AI stickers: how they differ from photo stickers
AI stickers are generated from a written description rather than prepared directly from a photo. WhatsApp says the feature uses a service from Meta. Enter a prompt, review the generated options, and send or edit a result. Up to four stickers may be generated from one prompt.

At the time of WhatsApp’s help-page description, AI-sticker prompts were supported in English, Indonesian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The feature was available only in limited countries and might not be available to everyone within an eligible country. Availability, supported languages, and controls are volatile, so an absent AI option can reflect account or regional rollout rather than a problem with your phone.
AI stickers are therefore not a replacement for the photo-based creator. Use the photo workflow when you need a specific person, object, or authorized image; use AI generation when a text-described illustration is sufficient and the feature is offered for your account.

A sticker pack will not download
- Check that the phone or computer has an active internet connection.
- Reopen the pack browser and try the download again.
- Update WhatsApp, especially if the pack-management screen looks different from the instructions.
- Check available device storage.
A custom-sticker option is missing
Confirm that you are running the latest Android or iOS version supported by WhatsApp. The help instructions describe custom packs for current mobile releases; desktop controls may not expose the same creator. If the feature is still absent after updating, it may not yet be enabled for that account or platform.
An animated sticker is rejected
Verify all three animated limits: no more than 500 KB per file, a 512 × 512-pixel canvas, and total animation duration of no more than 10 seconds. Also keep the pack at 30 stickers or fewer.
A sticker disappeared from Recents
Recents is only a recently-sent list. Removing an entry from it does not delete the sticker. Look in Favorites or in the downloaded pack that contains it.

Search returns fewer stickers than expected
Try a different word or an emoji with a more direct meaning. Search results come from WhatsApp and third-party providers, so availability can vary by language, provider catalog, geography, and account rollout. You can still use downloaded packs without relying on online search.
A practical way to manage stickers
- Keep essentials in Favorites: save the reactions and symbols you use repeatedly.
- Leave Recents as a history: use it for short-term retrieval rather than long-term storage.
- Remove unused packs: reduce scrolling and local storage by deleting collections you no longer use.
- Use search selectively: remember that a broader search shares the emoji used for that search with WhatsApp and third-party providers.
- Check rights before creating: only make or publish packs from images you are authorized to use.
This arrangement keeps frequently used stickers one tap away while preserving a clear distinction between local organization, downloaded collections, and online discovery.

Can I send stickers in a group chat?
Yes. WhatsApp supports stickers in both individual and group chats.
Does deleting a sticker from Recents delete it everywhere?
No. It only removes the item from the Recents list. It does not delete the sticker from a chat or from its downloaded pack.
Can I make a complete sticker pack without publishing an app?
