Western Pennsylvania helped launch the modern U.S. petroleum industry, but it does not set one price for gasoline today. Edwin Drake’s 1859 well at Titusville was a practical drilling breakthrough; current gas prices are shaped by distinct crude-oil benchmarks and regional gasoline markets, along with refining, distribution, retail costs and taxes.
What happened at Titusville in 1859?
On August 27, 1859, Edwin Drake struck oil 69 feet below the surface at Titusville, Pennsylvania. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers describes the well as the first practical oil-recovery system to combine salt-well drilling techniques with modern pipe-driving methods, and identifies it as the beginning of the U.S. petroleum industry. ASME’s landmark record says, “The drilling of this oil well marks the modern phase of the petroleum industry.”
This is a milestone in modern oil production, not the first human use of petroleum or the first oil extraction anywhere. ASME notes that oil excavation in the area dated to the 1500s and that people explored oil’s uses during the 1800s; by the 1850s, it was being developed as an illuminant.

No. Crude is the main input to gasoline production, but it is only one part of the price at the pump. The U.S. Energy Information Administration identifies four broad components: crude oil, refining costs and margins, distribution and retail costs and margins, and taxes. Gasoline supply and demand, regional inventories and wholesale gasoline margins also matter.

In an October 2014 report, EIA estimated that refinery crude cost accounted for about two-thirds of the pump price in the period it analyzed. That is a historical estimate, not a fixed share or a current universal rule. The same report notes that a $1-per-barrel crude-price change equals about 2.38 cents per gallon arithmetically, using 42 gallons per barrel. That conversion does not guarantee an identical change at the pump: market conditions affect how crude-price movements pass through to gasoline prices.
Which oil and gasoline prices are used as references?
There is no single market price that directly sets every U.S. pump price. WTI and Brent are separate crude-oil benchmarks, while gasoline itself trades at regional hubs. EIA’s price table distinguishes WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma; Brent, associated with Europe; and spot gasoline prices at locations such as New York Harbor and the U.S. Gulf Coast.

| Price series | What it represents | Example for week ending October 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| WTI | Crude-oil spot price at Cushing, Oklahoma | $98.07 per barrel |
| Brent | Crude-oil spot benchmark associated with Europe | $120.03 per barrel |
| New York Harbor regular gasoline | Regional gasoline spot price, not a retail pump price | $3.433 per gallon |
These figures are EIA weekly spot prices released October 7, 2026. The weekly values are unweighted averages of daily closing spot prices. They are dated market observations, not prices drivers necessarily paid at a station; pump prices also reflect local costs, margins and taxes.

Why can Brent matter more than WTI to U.S. gasoline prices?
The relationship between crude benchmarks changes over time. EIA’s October 2014 analysis covered data from January 2000 through June 2014. It found that after WTI became significantly discounted to Brent around 2011, WTI lost much of its explanatory power for changes in U.S. gasoline prices, while Brent lost very little. The study also discussed regional gasoline inventories and wholesale gasoline margins, often called crack spreads.

This is a finding about the period and data examined in that report, not a fresh analysis of today’s market. It illustrates why a U.S. crude benchmark alone may not explain U.S. gasoline-price movements, and why crude and gasoline prices must be compared by location and time period.

The Titusville well helped establish a practical model for modern U.S. oil production. It did not create a Pennsylvania price-setting system that still governs gasoline. Today, crude benchmarks describe different markets, and regional gasoline spot prices capture conditions closer to where fuel is bought and sold wholesale. Retail prices then reflect those market inputs plus refining, distribution, retail costs and taxes.
