Neither telescope is universally better for exoplanets. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (Webb) extends observations into the infrared with a 6.5-meter mirror, while the Hubble Space Telescope combines ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared coverage with decades of atmospheric measurements. Webb is especially valuable for faint infrared signals and thermal-emission studies; Hubble remains essential for ultraviolet and visible-light work and provides an established baseline for atmospheric composition. The right choice depends on the planet, its host star, the signal being measured and the wavelength where that signal appears.

NASA describes the missions as complementary rather than as a replacement relationship. Their overlapping near-infrared coverage lets astronomers compare results, while Webb’s longer wavelength range opens measurements Hubble cannot make.

Webb and Hubble at a glance

Comparison point Hubble Webb Why it matters for exoplanets
Wavelength range Ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared light, approximately 0.1–2.5 microns according to NASA’s comparison Visible red through mid-infrared light, approximately 0.6–28.5 microns Different molecules and atmospheric processes absorb or emit at different wavelengths.
Primary mirror 2.4 meters 6.5 meters Webb collects more light from faint targets, particularly useful at infrared wavelengths.
Light-collecting area NASA uses Hubble as the comparison baseline More than six times Hubble’s light-collecting area, according to NASA More photons can improve the signal available for spectroscopy, but do not guarantee a better result for every target.
Resolution Strong at shorter ultraviolet and visible wavelengths Similar resolution to Hubble in near-infrared wavelengths, according to NASA’s comparison Angular resolution depends on both mirror diameter and wavelength; mirror size alone is not a complete ranking.
Exoplanet techniques Transit spectroscopy and other observations, including ultraviolet and visible measurements Infrared transmission spectroscopy and thermal-emission measurements The observing method must match the planet’s atmosphere, temperature and orbital geometry.
Scientific role Established atmospheric measurements and wavelength coverage Webb does not duplicate across its full range Higher infrared sensitivity and access to longer wavelengths Combining data can separate wavelength-specific effects from a planet’s broader atmospheric behavior.

NASA’s technical comparison is available at Hubble vs. Webb. The wavelength figures and mirror measurements above are mission specifications, not a controlled head-to-head test of exoplanet performance.

Why wavelength determines which telescope is more useful

Hubble’s ultraviolet-to-near-infrared coverage

Hubble observes from about 0.1 to 2.5 microns. That span includes ultraviolet and visible light as well as near-infrared wavelengths. NASA says Hubble was optimized for shorter ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, although it also contributes important near-infrared observations. Ultraviolet measurements can reveal how energetic radiation interacts with an atmosphere, while visible and near-infrared spectra can contain signatures of gases and aerosols.

Webb’s longer infrared reach

Webb covers about 0.6 to 28.5 microns. Its range overlaps Hubble from roughly 0.6 to 2.5 microns, then continues much farther into the infrared. Longer wavelengths are useful because many molecules have strong vibrational or rotational features there, and a planet’s own heat is more readily measured in infrared emission than in visible light.

The overlap is scientifically valuable. Astronomers can compare measurements in the shared near-infrared region and then use Webb’s additional wavelengths to test whether an apparent feature persists, changes strength or belongs to a different physical process. A telescope reaching farther into the infrared therefore expands the questions that can be asked; it does not make Hubble’s ultraviolet data redundant.

How exoplanet spectroscopy works

Transit transmission spectroscopy

During a transit, an exoplanet passes between Earth and its host star. Most starlight reaches the telescope directly, but a small fraction travels through the planet’s atmospheric limb. Atmospheric molecules absorb selected wavelengths, so the star appears slightly dimmer at those wavelengths than it would without the planet in front of it. Repeating the measurement across a wavelength range produces a transmission spectrum.

Webb’s infrared spectrographs can measure these wavelength-dependent changes beyond the range available to visible-light observations alone. Hubble has also measured starlight filtered through exoplanet atmospheres, building a substantial record of atmospheric composition. NASA explains the basic process in Webb’s Impact on Exoplanet Research and its Hubble Exoplanets overview.

Thermal-emission spectroscopy

A planet also emits heat. By observing the system when the planet moves behind its star, astronomers can compare the combined star-plus-planet light with the star alone. The difference constrains the planet’s thermal emission. This approach is particularly suited to infrared observations, where a cool planet’s own radiation is more prominent.

Why a spectrum is not a photograph

Neither a transmission spectrum nor a thermal-emission measurement is a resolved picture of an Earth-like surface. Exoplanets are small and lie close to bright stars, so Hubble can directly image them only rarely. Most atmospheric results come from analyzing tiny changes in the host star’s light. Webb’s exoplanet program likewise emphasizes spectroscopy and thermal emission rather than detailed surface images. NASA discusses this distinction in What Would Earth’s Atmosphere Look Like from the James Webb Space Telescope?.

What Webb’s larger mirror changes

Webb’s primary mirror is 6.5 meters across, compared with Hubble’s 2.4-meter mirror. NASA states that Webb has more than six times Hubble’s light-collecting area. Collecting more photons can raise the signal-to-noise ratio of a faint spectrum, shorten the observing time needed for a given precision or make a previously impractical target measurable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This advantage is most consequential when the useful signal is in the infrared, where sources can be faint and thermal backgrounds must be controlled. It is not an automatic win in every comparison. Resolution is governed by diffraction as well as aperture, and diffraction becomes more pronounced at longer wavelengths. NASA therefore notes that Webb’s resolution is similar to Hubble’s in the near-infrared despite Webb’s larger mirror. Instrument design, detector performance, target brightness, transit duration and stellar variability also affect the final measurement.

NASA sometimes describes Webb as able to see objects up to 100 times fainter than Hubble. That is a general faint-object capability statement, not a measured improvement for exoplanet-atmosphere observations. It should not be converted into a claim that every exoplanet spectrum will be 100 times more sensitive.

What Hubble contributes that Webb does not replace

A long record of atmospheric detections

NASA credits Hubble with the first measurements of atmospheric composition for extrasolar planets. Its exoplanet work includes reported detections of sodium, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, helium and water vapor. Those observations provide historical context and comparison data for newer Webb measurements.

Ultraviolet and visible diagnostics

Webb does not cover Hubble’s full ultraviolet range. Ultraviolet and visible observations can probe energetic radiation from a host star and how that radiation relates to atmospheric loss or chemical processes. A study focused on those wavelengths may therefore require Hubble or another ultraviolet-capable observatory even when Webb offers superior infrared sensitivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitoring and complementary measurements

Hubble can revisit targets in wavelength bands where Webb has no equivalent coverage. Such monitoring helps distinguish a planetary signal from changes in the host star or from wavelength-dependent behavior. NASA’s Webb FAQs describes the missions as complementary, not as a simple old-versus-new substitution.

What Webb adds to atmospheric characterization

Broader molecular access

Webb’s 0.6–28.5-micron range reaches molecular features and thermal emission that cannot be captured across Hubble’s full operating span. A single Webb observation can cover a broad infrared interval, reducing the need to infer long-wavelength behavior from separated measurements.

Fainter and cooler targets

The larger collecting area helps when the planet-to-star signal is extremely small. This matters for smaller or cooler planets, where the atmosphere blocks or emits only a tiny amount of light relative to the host star. The result is a capability to test atmospheric models for worlds that would be difficult to characterize with shorter-wavelength observations alone.

Infrared context for Hubble features

When Hubble detects a feature in the ultraviolet, visible or near-infrared, Webb can provide additional infrared context. Agreement across instruments strengthens an interpretation; disagreement can reveal clouds, temperature structure, stellar contamination or another effect that a narrower wavelength range could not expose. The observations are most powerful when planned as a combined data set rather than as competing scores.

Examples that show the difference

WASP-96 b: a transmission spectrum with water vapor

NASA reports that Webb’s first exoplanet transmission spectrum of WASP-96 b showed clear signs of water vapor. The published overview describes the spectrum as spanning 0.6 to 2.8 microns in a single observation. This demonstrates Webb’s ability to measure a broad infrared transmission signal, but it does not establish that WASP-96 b is habitable or that water is present as a liquid ocean. Water vapor is an atmospheric constituent, not a life verdict.

TRAPPIST-1 b: thermal emission from a small, cool planet

NASA identifies TRAPPIST-1 b as a Webb thermal-emission observation of a planet as small as Earth and as cool as rocky planets in our Solar System. The example illustrates the sensitivity needed to measure a rocky planet’s emitted infrared energy. It is a capability demonstration, not proof that the planet has a life-supporting atmosphere.

Hubble’s molecular inventory

Hubble’s observations have detected a wide range of atmospheric molecules, including sodium, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, helium and water vapor. These results show why Hubble remains scientifically relevant: its ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared measurements cover atmospheric behavior that a mid-infrared-only analysis would miss.

Rocky planets around red dwarfs

NASA reports that Webb and Hubble are observing rocky exoplanets and red-dwarf host stars to investigate how radiation and gravity relate to atmospheric retention. The relationship is not determined by one number. Stellar radiation, planetary gravity and other variables all influence whether an atmosphere survives, so the observations test a research question rather than provide a universal retention rule. NASA’s September 30, 2025 asset, last updated September 22, 2026, explains this context at Which Planets Have an Atmosphere? Radiation vs. Escape Velocity.

Which telescope fits a particular exoplanet question?

Science question More suitable starting point Reason What the other telescope can add
What gases appear in a broad infrared transmission spectrum? Webb Its 0.6–28.5-micron coverage and larger collecting area target faint infrared features. Hubble can provide overlapping near-infrared or shorter-wavelength context.
How does high-energy stellar radiation affect an atmosphere? Hubble Its ultraviolet capability covers wavelengths Webb does not. Webb can test the atmosphere’s infrared composition and thermal structure.
What is the planet’s infrared thermal emission? Webb Longer infrared wavelengths are suited to measuring a cool planet’s own radiation. Hubble may contribute reflected-light or near-infrared constraints when feasible.
Does a previously reported feature persist across wavelength bands? Both Overlapping observations test whether the signal is robust and physically consistent. Each telescope samples a different part of the spectrum, making the combination more informative.
Can the data prove habitability or life? Neither alone Spectroscopy constrains atmospheric composition and conditions; it does not establish biology by itself. Joint wavelength coverage can improve the constraints but does not remove the interpretation problem.

A practical observing workflow

  1. Define the physical question. Decide whether the goal is detecting atmospheric gases, measuring thermal emission, tracking ultraviolet irradiation or checking a previous result. The question determines the necessary wavelength range.
  2. Check the target geometry. A transmission study requires a transit, while a thermal-emission study needs suitable orbital timing and enough contrast between the planet and star. A planet that never transits cannot be analyzed with ordinary transit spectroscopy.
  3. Match the telescope to the signal. Select Hubble for ultraviolet or visible diagnostics and Webb for broad or faint infrared work. For an atmosphere whose behavior spans both regimes, plan complementary observations rather than forcing one observatory to answer every part.
  4. Measure the star-plus-planet system. During a transit, record the wavelength-dependent reduction in starlight as the atmosphere filters it. For thermal emission, compare measurements when the planet is visible with those obtained when it is hidden behind the star.
  5. Model the spectrum cautiously. Convert absorption or emission features into possible molecular abundances and temperature structures, while accounting for measurement uncertainty and stellar behavior. A detected molecule is evidence about composition, not a direct observation of a surface or ecosystem.
  6. Compare independent wavelength ranges. Use Hubble’s shorter-wavelength data and Webb’s infrared data together when available. Consistency strengthens the atmospheric interpretation; a mismatch is a scientific clue, not automatically an instrument failure.

Why atmospheric detection is not a habitability test

Atmospheric spectroscopy identifies or constrains molecules and physical conditions. It does not show whether a planet has liquid water, a stable climate or life. Even prominent absorption features can be extremely faint, and the same molecule can arise through multiple non-biological processes.

NASA’s atmosphere studies emphasize that radiation and gravity are important to atmospheric retention, but they are not the only variables. Host-star activity, planetary history and atmospheric chemistry affect the outcome as well. Consequently, a Webb detection of water vapor, carbon dioxide or another gas should be reported as a composition result unless a separate analysis supports a stronger conclusion.

The question NASA poses on its Hubble exoplanet page—“Can any of the 5,000 planets we’ve found support life?”—is the page’s reader-facing wording, not a current confirmed-planet count. It frames the scientific goal without turning an atmospheric measurement into proof of biology.

Common misconceptions and how to avoid them

  • “Webb replaces Hubble.” False. Webb extends infrared capability; Hubble retains ultraviolet and visible coverage and a major archive of atmospheric observations.
  • “A 6.5-meter mirror means six times better resolution.” False. NASA’s more-than-six-times figure refers to light-collecting area. Resolution also depends on wavelength and instrument design.
  • “Webb takes pictures of exoplanet surfaces.” Usually false. Most results are indirect spectra or thermal-emission measurements of unresolved planets.
  • “Detecting water means the planet is habitable.” False. Water vapor is one atmospheric constituent; habitability requires a much broader assessment of pressure, temperature, chemistry and persistence.
  • “The 100-times-fainter statement is an exoplanet performance score.” Not established. NASA presents it as a general faint-object capability, not as a controlled comparison of atmospheric detections.
  • “Every infrared observation belongs to Webb.” False. Hubble reaches near-infrared wavelengths up to about 2.5 microns, overlapping Webb’s short-wavelength end.

The bottom line for exoplanet science

Choose Webb when the decisive evidence is faint, cool or molecularly rich infrared light, especially for broad transmission spectra and thermal emission from small planets. Choose Hubble when ultraviolet or visible measurements matter, when an established atmospheric baseline is needed or when the target’s behavior must be monitored outside Webb’s range. For the most complete picture, use both: Hubble supplies shorter-wavelength and historical context, while Webb extends the spectrum and improves infrared sensitivity. Their value lies in the combination, not in declaring one telescope the universal winner.
