A typical web-app Save button downloads an output file; it does not, by itself, update the file you opened. In browsers that support the File System Access API, an app can instead ask you to select a destination, obtain a file handle, and—with your permission—write changes to that selected file. This is a different, permission-gated save path, not unrestricted access to your computer.

Why a web-app Save button often makes another file

Many web apps implement Save by preparing the edited content and triggering a browser download, often through an <a download> link. The browser delivers an output file. That download mechanism does not give the page a persistent handle to the file you originally opened, nor does it let the page overwrite that original through the download link. Depending on the browser and your choices, you may need to pick a name or location and manage the resulting file yourself. Chrome for Developers explains the download fallback and its limitations.

What changes with the File System Access API

The File System Access API provides a separate route: the user selects a file or save destination, and the app receives a FileSystemFileHandle. With the relevant permission, the app can create a writable stream, send the new content to it, and close the stream to complete the write. For a file opened through a supported workflow, the app can retain its handle and use it for later saves, subject to browser permission checks. MDN documents the save picker and the writable-stream method.

The basic save sequence

  1. In response to a user action, call showSaveFilePicker() and let the user choose a target. The method resolves to a file handle if the selection succeeds.

The browser does not necessarily write directly over the original as each byte arrives. MDN describes a temporary-file process: the browser performs security checks and replaces the original only after those checks pass. A write can therefore still fail. See MDN’s description of createWritable().

Download versus writing through a file handle

Question Download-style Save File System Access API
What does the app get? An output file is sent to the browser’s download flow; the download link does not give the app a handle to the original. A handle to the file or destination the user selected.
Can it update the selected original? Not through the download mechanism itself. It can write through the handle when the browser supports the API and grants the required permission.
What does the user need to do? Receive and manage the downloaded output. Select a target and authorize access when prompted; the browser retains control over access.
What if the API is unavailable or access is denied? It remains a practical fallback for delivering output. The app should offer another route, such as a download, or explain that it could not save to the selected file.

Requirements and failure cases to account for

The picker needs a user action and a secure context

showSaveFilePicker() must be called from a user gesture, such as clicking Save, and is available only in a secure context. If an app performs lengthy processing before opening the picker, it may lose the required user activation and receive a SecurityError. When the workflow allows, request the destination first and then prepare or write the content. MDN lists the picker requirements and errors.

Support is not universal

MDN marks showSaveFilePicker() as having limited availability. Chrome for Developers describes support across most Chromium browsers and recommends feature detection; neither source establishes universal browser support. Check whether the method exists before offering this save route, and provide an alternative where it does not. MDN’s availability note and Chrome for Developers’ support guidance describe these limits.

Selection is not permanent permission

A user can cancel the picker, deny permission, or encounter a later permission or security failure while writing. The API does not let a web page browse and modify arbitrary files without the user’s involvement. File access remains governed by browser permissions. MDN’s File System API overview describes the permission model.
