Satellite internet problems caused by weather and problems caused by trees or buildings have different fixes. Rain, snow and hail can weaken the radio signal along its path; a tree branch, roof or nearby building can physically obstruct the terminal’s view of satellites as they move overhead. A clearer or higher mounting position may help with that local blockage, but it cannot prevent precipitation from attenuating a signal.

For Starlink users, the practical first step is to check the provider app’s obstruction scan at the terminal’s planned position and height, then compare alerts with the weather and inspect the equipment. This can help distinguish a placement problem from a temporary weather effect before you relocate the dish or install a mount.

Why reception drops: two different paths to investigate

Satellite internet depends on a radio link between a terminal at your property and satellites moving overhead. That link can be affected by conditions along the signal path or by objects close to the terminal. Although both may appear as interruptions or reduced service, they are not the same problem and should not be treated with the same fix.

Cause What happens What may help
Weather along the radio path Precipitation can attenuate, or weaken, radio signals. Storms near a local ground station can also affect service, according to Starlink. Wait for conditions to pass, then check whether service recovers. Moving the terminal higher does not remove precipitation from the signal path.
Local obstruction A tree branch, pole, roof or building can block the path between the terminal and a satellite. Use the provider’s obstruction tool, if available, to assess the planned position; consider a clearer location or a safe, suitable mount.
Equipment or connection issue Snow, ice, leaves, debris, a shifted terminal or a damaged or loose cable may interfere with operation. Inspect the equipment and cable connections when it is safe to do so; review the provider app’s alerts.
Indoor Wi-Fi coverage The satellite link may be working while devices inside the home have a separate wireless coverage problem. Check whether the service itself is interrupted before treating an indoor Wi-Fi issue as a satellite reception fault.

The distinction matters when choosing what to do next. A mount can change the terminal’s view of the sky; it cannot clear rain or snow from the radio path. Conversely, waiting for a storm to pass will not remove a roofline or persistent tree obstruction.

How rain, snow and storms affect satellite internet

Precipitation can weaken a radio signal as it travels through rain, snow or hail. Starlink says significant weather can attenuate its signals, and that moderate to heavy rain, snow and hail can cause momentary dropouts. The service may return as conditions pass, but there is no single outage duration or precipitation threshold established for every location, plan or hardware configuration.

The relevant weather is not necessarily limited to what is directly over your home. Starlink also notes that storms near ground stations can affect service. A clear sky at the property therefore does not, by itself, rule out a weather-related service effect.

What to expect during bad weather

  • Interruptions that coincide with heavy rain, snow or hail may be weather-related. Note when they start and whether service improves after conditions clear.
  • Do not assume that ordinary cloud cover always blocks satellite internet. The cited Starlink guidance addresses significant weather and precipitation, not a universal rule that clouds cause outages.
  • Do not rely on a fixed outage estimate. The available guidance does not establish a typical duration or a consumer threshold that applies across providers, places and equipment.
  • After severe weather, inspect for snow or ice accumulation, debris, a shifted terminal or cable damage if it is safe to do so.

The FCC’s 2024 decision on satellite-system compatibility discussed rain-attenuation assumptions as an engineering input and declined to require one set of assumptions, saying reliability and representativeness would be assessed case by case. That is regulatory context for compatibility analysis, not a household forecast or a statistic for expected service loss.

How trees, roofs and buildings block the satellite view

A terminal needs a usable view of the sky while satellites move overhead. Objects in that view can interrupt the link. Starlink’s Standard4 Install Guide puts it plainly: “Objects that obstruct the connection between your Starlink and the satellite, such as a tree branch, pole, or roof, will cause service interruptions.” Nearby buildings and other objects can create the same basic line-of-sight problem.

The obstruction can be easy to miss from a casual glance. A position that looks open from the ground may still have branches or roof edges in the terminal’s usable field of view. That field of view depends on the specific terminal hardware, so a visual guess is not a substitute for using a tool designed for the equipment.

Use an obstruction scan at the intended installation spot

For Starlink, the app’s “Check for Obstructions” feature is intended to assess a candidate installation position. Run the scan where you expect the terminal to go, and hold the phone near the planned terminal height and perspective. If you are comparing possible positions, repeat the scan at each one. A scan from a convenient spot or a different height may not represent the view the installed terminal will have.

Check the intended position before permanently drilling, clamping or routing a cable. A scan is useful for evaluating the sky view, but it does not settle whether a roof or pole installation is structurally suitable or safe. Follow the instructions for the specific hardware generation and mounting surface.

Why an obstruction can become noticeable later

A previously acceptable position may change. Branches can grow or gain leaves, new foliage can enter the view, and debris or snow can accumulate on or near the equipment. Wind or other conditions may also shift a terminal. If interruptions begin after a seasonal change or storm, check the app’s obstruction information and inspect the equipment rather than assuming the original placement is still clear.

When moving or raising a terminal can help

If an obstruction scan or persistent obstruction alerts point to a local blockage, the practical options are to relocate the terminal to a clearer position, clear the obstruction when that can be done safely, or raise the terminal with an appropriate mount. Starlink describes roof, pole and wall installations and advises relocating or raising the unit above obstructions where practical.

Choose a new position by comparing the obstruction scans at the actual planned height, not by assuming that higher is automatically better. Also consider whether the position can support a suitable mount and safe installation, and whether the cable can be routed appropriately. A higher spot is useful only if it actually clears the relevant obstruction and is suitable for the terminal.

  • Relocate: Test a clearer candidate position with the app before making a permanent change.
  • Raise: Use a compatible mount only if it safely places the terminal above the obstruction.
  • Clear: Remove or trim an obstruction only when the work is safe and lawful; use professional assistance for hazardous tree or installation work.
  • Recheck: Review the obstruction information after the change to see whether the placement issue has improved.

Starlink terminals can switch among visible satellites as links degrade and build an obstruction map while operating. That can make some interruptions less noticeable, but it does not make trees or buildings irrelevant. Starlink still advises finding a less obstructed position when alerts and interruptions persist. This is provider-specific guidance, not a guarantee about how every satellite internet system handles blockage.

  1. Review the provider app. Check for service, outage or obstruction alerts. For Starlink, open the app and use “Check for Obstructions” at the intended terminal position and height. App labels and available diagnostics may differ between providers.
  2. Compare the timing with the weather. Record whether interruptions coincide with heavy rain, snow, hail, storms or high winds. Try again after conditions pass; if service returns, that timing is useful evidence of a temporary weather effect, not a guarantee about future performance.
  3. Inspect the terminal and cabling. When safe, look for snow, ice, leaves, soil or other debris; check whether the terminal has shifted; and inspect cables for damage. Confirm that connections are fully seated. Do not climb or work in hazardous conditions to perform these checks.
  4. Assess persistent obstruction alerts. If the map or alerts indicate a recurring issue, scan a clearer candidate location before committing to a permanent installation. Keep the phone near the proposed terminal height and perspective during each scan.
  5. Make a physical change only if it addresses the identified cause. Relocate or raise the unit when a suitable position can clear a measured obstruction. Use a mount compatible with the exact hardware and appropriate for the surface; do not treat a mount as a remedy for rain attenuation.
  6. Separate satellite service from home Wi-Fi. If the provider app shows the satellite connection is available but a device still cannot connect reliably indoors, investigate the home wireless connection separately rather than moving the outdoor terminal without evidence of an obstruction.

Choosing a location and mount without creating a new problem

Compare candidate positions using the same practical criteria. The obstruction scan should reflect the terminal’s actual planned height and viewpoint, and the location should be viable for safe installation and cable routing. The mount, terminal and surface must be compatible; check the instructions for the relevant hardware generation rather than assuming one mount fits every model.

A roof, pole or wall mount can be a reasonable way to clear a confirmed local obstruction. It is not a universal upgrade: if the problem is precipitation, elevation does not remove the rain or snow along the radio path. Nor does the presence of an obstruction automatically justify risky roof work or tree trimming. Starlink advises users to seek professional assistance when installation or clearing would be unsafe.

For difficult roof, pole or tree work, consider a qualified installer rather than climbing or cutting branches yourself. No specific installer, availability or price is established here. A physical change should follow evidence from the obstruction scan and a safety assessment, not a guess that greater height must improve service.

What the available evidence does—and does not—tell you

Starlink’s installation and support guidance supports the practical distinction between local obstruction and weather attenuation, and describes its own app, mounting options and satellite switching. Those statements should not be generalized to all satellite providers: hardware field of view, diagnostic tools and network behavior can differ.

No suitable general consumer statistic is established for how much signal reception a particular tree, building or storm will reduce, or how long a household interruption will last. The FCC’s 2024 engineering discussion of rain attenuation does not provide a typical household outage figure. For an individual installation, the provider’s diagnostics, conditions at the time and the terminal’s actual view are more useful than applying a universal rain-fade number.

Keep three issues separate when diagnosing a slow or interrupted connection: the satellite radio link, obstructions in the terminal’s sky view, and Wi-Fi coverage inside the home. They may produce similar complaints, but the right fix depends on which one is affected.
