Action cameras are waterproof only within the depth and setup limits specified for the exact model. A camera’s bare-body rating is different from its rating inside a compatible housing, and requirements such as an installed lens guard, assembled parts, or fully closed covers matter. For scuba diving, fast-moving water, or a camera with little bare-body protection, use the manufacturer’s housing rated for your model and planned depth.
What does “waterproof” mean for an action camera?
It means the manufacturer specifies a limit for a particular camera configuration—not that every version of the camera, accessory, or use is safe underwater. Treat a depth rating as a bounded product specification, not an independent test result or a guarantee against water damage.
Check the rating for the configuration you will actually use: the camera on its own, assembled with required parts, or installed in a specific housing. A splash-proof accessory pod is not automatically submersible, and a case that looks compatible may not be approved for your camera.

The following are manufacturer-stated limits, not a ranking or a universal action-camera standard. Confirm the current manual and the exact accessory compatibility before use.

Do you need a waterproof case?
For shallow water, a bare camera may be suitable if its stated limit covers the planned exposure and every setup condition is met. A housing is the more appropriate choice for scuba depths beyond the camera’s bare rating, high-velocity water, or a model whose parts are not waterproof unless correctly assembled.
Before using the camera without a case
- Identify the exact camera model and check its current manual for the bare-camera depth limit.
- Install any required lens guard or mounting bracket and assemble the camera exactly as specified.
- Close battery, card, USB, and other access covers fully; keep the sealing surfaces and seals clean and intact.
- Check whether the manufacturer recommends a case for the kind of water exposure you expect.
When choosing a housing
- Match the housing to the exact camera model; do not choose by appearance or a generic depth claim.
- Check the housing’s own depth limit against your planned maximum depth.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for fitting and inspecting the housing and its seals.
- For high-speed water, use a compatible housing if the camera maker advises it, even when the bare camera has a depth rating.
A floating grip or tether can help prevent losing a camera, but neither increases its waterproof depth.

What changes underwater besides the depth limit?
Water can affect image quality as well as equipment safety. Insta360 notes that refraction affects the X3’s seamless 360-degree stitching underwater without its specialized Dive Case. If the camera’s main purpose is 360-degree footage, consider that limitation when deciding whether the bare camera is suitable.

How should you care for an action camera after saltwater?
Follow the instructions for your model rather than assuming all cameras use the same rinse and drying procedure. Insta360’s GO Ultra and GO 3S guidance advises freshwater rinsing or soaking and thorough drying after saltwater exposure. The X3 guidance emphasizes intact seals and clean cover areas. Consult your camera’s current manual for the applicable steps before opening covers or storing the device.

How to decide for your next outing
- Set the conditions: note the planned depth, whether you will scuba dive, and whether the water is moving fast.
- Check the exact camera rating: distinguish the bare-camera limit from any housing limit and note required guards, brackets, or closed covers.
- Match the protection to the use: for deeper diving, high-velocity water, or shallow/no bare-camera protection, use the manufacturer-compatible case rated for the planned depth.
- Prepare and care for it as specified: inspect seals and closures before use, then follow the model-specific post-water instructions.
