WARDOGS is the most flexible and contest-driven option in this group. It combines modern infantry combat, vehicles, construction and destruction in battles of up to 100 players, then adds a three-team fight over changing control zones. That gives it more room for individual play and improvisation than a communication-first military simulation.

Squad is the better fit for players who want structured two-sided warfare, squad leadership, logistics and constant coordination. Hell Let Loose is the historical alternative, built around World War II combat, armor, artillery and a resource-based front line. Arma Reforger belongs in the same broad sandbox conversation, but the available information does not support a detailed feature-by-feature verdict.

WARDOGS, Squad and Hell Let Loose at a glance

Game Match structure Scale Teamwork model Combined-arms focus Setting Best fit
WARDOGS Three teams contest randomized control zones in a King-of-the-Hill-inspired mode Up to 100 players Players can contribute alone or in organized squads; progression is player-driven Tactical gunplay, vehicles, construction and destruction Modern military Players who want flexible participation and a changing, contest-driven battlefield
Squad Two opposing armies in a 50-versus-50 format, organized into nine-person squads 100 players Communication, squad leadership, logistics and command channels are central Infantry, vehicles, logistics, fortifications and emplacements Modern and historical factions across its maps Players seeking disciplined coordination and a clearer military chain of command
Hell Let Loose Historical front-line warfare with a resource-based strategic layer 100-player framing Team coordination is tied to front-line movement and resource use Infantry, tanks and artillery World War II Players who prioritize historical atmosphere and front-line strategy

The practical difference is not player count. All three can create large battles, but they ask you to participate in different ways. WARDOGS changes the pressure by using three competing teams and movable objectives. Squad makes your role inside a team more explicit. Hell Let Loose puts the battle in a historical setting and connects tactical movement to a resource system.

What makes WARDOGS different?

A three-team control-zone battle

WARDOGS centers on a mode inspired by King of the Hill. Three teams fight over randomized control zones rather than advancing along a fixed two-sided front. Because the active zone can change, teams must decide whether to hold, attack, reposition or exploit an opening created elsewhere on the map.

That structure creates a different kind of uncertainty from a standard two-army match. You are not only watching the opposing force; a third team can interrupt an attack, take advantage of a weakened defense or force a temporary alliance of convenience without becoming a permanent ally. The result is a contest where local decisions can matter even when your squad is not following a single, predetermined route.

Modern combined arms with building and destruction

The official description presents WARDOGS as an all-out-warfare FPS combining tactical gunplay and combined-arms combat with building and destruction in a large-scale militaristic sandbox. Construction gives players a way to shape positions, while destruction means that defensive assumptions can be challenged instead of remaining permanent.

This is an important distinction from a shooter that only places fixed cover on a map. In WARDOGS, the battlefield is intended to be something players can modify and damage. The combination of vehicles, firearms and player-built or player-destroyed positions makes the environment part of the tactical decision rather than a backdrop.

Room for lone players and organized squads

WARDOGS is designed to support both individual participation and coordinated groups. The listing also describes player-driven progression and uses the phrase “There’s no one way to play, earn and progress.” That does not mean teamwork is irrelevant; it means the game is not presented as requiring every player to occupy a tightly managed squad role before contributing.

For a solo player, the three-team format can provide useful ways to affect a match without becoming the designated leader of a nine-person unit. For friends playing together, the same system leaves room to build a plan, support a push or exploit a newly opened route without requiring the entire server to follow one chain of command.

How Squad differs from WARDOGS

Two armies and defined squad organization

Squad is built around a more explicit military structure. Its official description emphasizes authentic combat through teamwork, communication and realistic combat, while the game presents battles as two opposing armies with nine-person squads. The organization itself is part of the experience: your squad has a leader, a local communication structure and a relationship to broader command decisions.

That design makes Squad easier to understand if your priority is a coherent side-wide operation. You know which force you belong to, which side controls the broader battle and why squad-level decisions matter to the team’s overall plan. The trade-off is that an uncoordinated player may feel less effective than in a more permissive sandbox.

Communication is a core mechanic

Squad’s communication model is not a cosmetic feature. Squad leadership, logistics and command channels connect local firefights to the wider operation. Information about movement, supplies and threats is expected to travel through those channels, so listening and reporting can be as important as marksmanship.

Choose Squad if the appeal of a tactical shooter is the social discipline: joining a squad, following a plan, reporting contact, supporting logistics and accepting that a leader’s decision may matter more than an individual kill count. Choose WARDOGS instead if you want the freedom to make progress through your own route or play with friends without committing every match to that level of formal coordination.

Similar combined arms, different emphasis

Both games combine infantry with vehicles and defensive construction. Squad’s emphasis is on logistics, fortifications and emplacements as parts of a coordinated military operation. WARDOGS places construction and destruction inside a more fluid, three-way control-zone contest. The shared presence of vehicles does not make the games interchangeable: the surrounding objective and communication systems determine how those vehicles are used.

Where Hell Let Loose fits

Hell Let Loose is the clearest historical alternative. It presents 100-player World War II battles with infantry, tanks and artillery, and adds a resource-based layer to the front line. That combination gives the game a different rhythm from WARDOGS: the setting, weapons and battlefield decisions are tied to a historical conflict rather than a modern militaristic sandbox.

Select Hell Let Loose when historical atmosphere is a deciding factor, especially if you want armor and artillery to operate inside a front-line system where resources influence the campaign. Select WARDOGS when modern equipment, destructible and buildable positions, and three-way objective pressure are more important than period authenticity.

Is WARDOGS more like Arma or Battlefield?

WARDOGS occupies a middle space between highly structured tactical shooters and more immediately accessible large-scale action games. Its combined arms, player-built defenses and destructible environments point toward a sandbox tradition associated with military simulation. Its three-team control-zone format and flexible participation make it less rigid than a game that requires every player to follow a formal chain of command.

That makes “Arma or Battlefield?” an imperfect either-or question. WARDOGS has the modern battlefield scale and vehicle-and-infantry mix that action-focused players recognize, but its construction, destruction and objective pressure ask for more tactical adaptation than a straightforward run-and-gun match. At the same time, the available information does not establish that it matches the depth, realism or simulation systems of a dedicated military sandbox.

Arma Reforger is relevant as a broad sandbox comparison, but there is not enough verified detail here to make a granular claim about its specific modes, player counts or systems. Treat it as a neighboring option for players seeking a sandbox-oriented military experience, not as a direct specification match for WARDOGS.

Is WARDOGS a milsim?

WARDOGS is best described as a modern tactical FPS with sandbox and combined-arms elements, rather than being labeled a strict milsim on the available evidence. It uses tactical gunplay, vehicles, construction and destruction, but its defining match structure is a three-team control-zone contest and its progression is explicitly player-driven.

A strict military simulation usually asks players to accept more formal roles, procedures and communication requirements. Squad sits closer to that end of the spectrum because leadership, logistics and command communication are central to its design. WARDOGS appears more permissive: coordinated groups can play tactically, while individual players still have meaningful ways to participate.

Can you play WARDOGS casually with friends?

Yes. The game’s stated support for lone-player or squad contribution makes it suitable for a group that wants to cooperate without turning every session into a scheduled operation. Friends can stay together, react to changing control zones and use construction or destruction to support an attack or defense.

Casual does not mean consequence-free. A three-team match can punish a group that focuses only on one opponent while another team captures the active zone. The easiest casual approach is to agree on a simple shared goal—hold the current zone, pressure a rival or open a route—then adapt when the objective changes.

  • Use a shared direction so the group does not split across unrelated fights.
  • Watch for the third team before committing to a long attack.
  • Treat built defenses as temporary advantages, not permanent guarantees.
  • Let individual players choose their own routes when the main push is stalled.

Which large-scale tactical shooter should you choose?

Choose WARDOGS if you want:

  • A modern military setting.
  • Up-to-100-player battles with three-way objective pressure.
  • Vehicles combined with building and destruction.
  • Freedom to contribute alone or with a squad.
  • A battlefield that can change as control zones and structures change.

Choose Squad if you want:

  • A two-sided military structure.
  • Nine-person squads with explicit leadership.
  • Communication and command channels as central systems.
  • Logistics, fortifications and emplacements tied to team operations.
  • A more disciplined, coordination-heavy experience.

Choose Hell Let Loose if you want:

  • World War II history rather than a modern setting.
  • Infantry combat supported by tanks and artillery.
  • A front-line battle shaped by resources.
  • Historical atmosphere to matter as much as mechanical flexibility.

Consider Arma Reforger if you want:

  • A sandbox-oriented military comparison outside the specific WARDOGS and Squad structures.

Early Access status and what the beta numbers mean

WARDOGS is listed on Steam as an Early Access game with a September 10, 2026 release date. Early Access matters when comparing it with established tactical shooters: features, balance and the practical feel of its systems can change as development continues. The official promise of a large-scale sandbox describes the intended design, not a guarantee that every system will remain unchanged.

Interest during testing was substantial. PC Gamer reported more than 100,000 peak concurrent players and nearly 500,000 total beta participants, quoting game director Howard Philpott saying, “The reaction from the FPS community has been insane.” Those figures describe the beta period; they are not a current retention measurement and should not be read as proof of an enduring player population after launch.

For a buyer, the sensible distinction is between what WARDOGS is trying to deliver and what a mature game already demonstrates. If you want the specific combination of modern combat, three-team zones and destructible construction, Early Access may be the reason to choose it. If you want a settled communication culture and a well-established two-army structure, Squad is the safer fit. If historical warfare is the priority, Hell Let Loose answers a different question altogether.
