Pulling a silicon wafer from a dotriacontane solution at different speeds produced different crystal patterns: a dragonfly-like dendritic form at slower reported speeds and long stripes at faster ones. The crystals were dotriacontane, not silicon; the wafer served as the supporting surface.
What are the “dragonfly crystals”?
They are dendritic crystals of dotriacontane, a 32-carbon alkane, formed on a silicon wafer during dip coating. The name describes the branching crystal pattern; it does not mean the wafer itself crystallized into a dragonfly shape.
An international team led by Patrick Huber of Hamburg University of Technology studied the film using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Chemistry World’s 2014 account of the work identifies the primary paper as T. P. Corrales and colleagues in ACS Nano, DOI 10.1021/nn5014534.

How did withdrawal speed affect the pattern?
Chemistry World reported two distinct speed ranges and their observed morphologies:

These are experimental thresholds reported in the 2014 account, not universal settings or exact transition points. The report does not describe what happened at speeds from 0.17 through 0.25 mm/s, so the two outcomes should not be treated as a complete phase diagram.
Why did the faster withdrawal produce stripes?
The article says the stripes were thought to form through a mechanism similar to “tears of wine,” also called wine legs: fluid motion and evaporation can create visible streaks as liquid drains from a surface. That is the proposed analogy in the report, not a fully specified growth mechanism for every coating condition.

Can these conditions be used as a recipe?
No. The reported speed ranges explain the observed contrast, but the accessible account does not provide the details needed to reproduce the experiment. It does not establish the wafer grade or dimensions, solution formulation, temperature, or full withdrawal protocol. Those details should not be guessed or inferred from the speed thresholds.
