A VR game mod works only when several parts line up: the exact game edition, headset platform, game version, mod loader, runtime, and every dependency. A mod is usually a plug-in or changed asset, not a complete application. The loader supplies the hook that lets the game discover and run it. Before downloading anything, identify whether you play on PCVR or a standalone headset, record the installed game version, and confirm that the mod and its loader explicitly support that combination.
What a VR game mod actually is
A mod adds content or changes behavior in an existing game. It might add custom songs, alter the interface, replace an asset, expose a new setting, or provide an entirely new game mechanic. The mod normally does not start by itself. It is loaded while the game starts, or when the game reaches the feature the mod changes.
That loading step is supplied by a framework such as a plug-in loader. The loader places compatible files where the game can find them, starts them at the appropriate time, and may provide shared services that several mods use. A plug-in can then depend on another plug-in, a library, or a particular loader release. Installing the visible mod file without its loader or dependencies commonly produces a game that starts with no change, reports an error, or fails to launch.

The loading chain: game, loader, plug-in and dependencies
The game and its edition
Mod files target a particular executable and file layout. A PC copy purchased through one store can differ from a standalone-headset build even when the title and content are the same. A mod made for one edition should not be assumed to work with another edition, a beta branch, or a different platform.

The loader and runtime
The loader is the bridge between the game and the plug-in. BepInEx, for example, publishes separate installation guidance for Unity Mono, Unity Il2Cpp, and .NET Framework games. Those are different runtime targets, so selecting a BepInEx package merely because the game uses Unity is not sufficient. The framework’s compatibility information lists integrations and their status; it includes a stable loader integration for Beat Saber IPA (BSIPA).
BepInEx documentation recommends a stable build for most players. Bleeding-edge builds contain newer changes but are generally more likely to have bugs. Use a bleeding-edge build only when the mod or its maintainers require it and you can recover from a failed launch.
The plug-in and its dependencies
The mod itself may be a DLL, an archive containing several files, or a package consumed by a manager. Its requirements can include a specific loader version, another plug-in, a shared library, or a matching game release. A dependency that is missing or too old can make one mod fail while the game and other mods continue to work.

Checks to complete before downloading
| Check | What to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game and edition | Exact title, store or launcher, branch, and edition | The mod’s file paths and executable may differ between editions. |
| Headset and platform | PCVR streamed from a computer or a game running directly on a standalone headset | PCVR and standalone builds use different files, tools, and installation workflows. |
| Installed game version | Version number shown by the game, launcher, or manager | A game update can break a loader or plug-in until it is rebuilt. |
| Supported mod version | The versions listed on the mod’s page or release notes | “For this game” does not mean “for every game version.” |
| Loader and runtime | Required framework, runtime-specific build, and loader version | A Mono, Il2Cpp, .NET Framework, IPA, or other build may be required. |
| Dependencies | Every required library or companion mod, including its version | The primary mod may not load until all prerequisites are present. |
| Install and removal method | Whether the project uses a manager, an archive, or manual file copying | Removal and updates differ, and loose files may not be tracked cleanly. |
| Recovery plan | How to disable or remove the mod and protect important saves or custom data | You need a way back if an update or incompatible file prevents startup. |
Read the project’s own instructions and compatibility table rather than treating a download page as proof of support. Version information can lag behind a game update. BeatVortex documentation specifically warns that it cannot determine every Beat Saber version match automatically and may require you to select a version manually.
PCVR and standalone Quest are different modding jobs
Whether the game runs on a computer or directly on a headset determines where files live and which tools can reach them. The current Beat Saber community guide separates these workflows rather than presenting one universal procedure.
| Platform | Typical control point | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| PCVR | Game installation on Windows and a PC-side manager or loader | You can manage game versions and files on the computer. Computer-based tools can install, enable, disable, and update plug-ins without modifying the headset’s standalone game package. |
| Standalone Quest | Headset package and a Quest-specific modding workflow | The file layout, permissions, supported tools, and compatible mod builds differ from PCVR. A PCVR DLL or loader package is not a substitute for a Quest build. |
The Beat Saber guide’s distinction is specific to that game. Do not infer that another VR title uses the same managers or file paths.

Beat Saber as a concrete example
Beat Saber is a useful illustration because its community documentation describes separate PCVR and Quest paths. The BeastSaber guide, last updated April 6, 2026, also cautions new users not to install every available mod immediately.
PCVR with a central manager
- Install and launch Beat Saber once without mods. This lets the game create its normal files and confirms that the unmodified installation works.
- Choose a PCVR management route that supports your installed game version. The guide describes BSManager as a place to manage mods, custom maps, and multiple game versions.
- Check each mod’s purpose and requirements before selecting it. Record the loader and dependency versions the mod lists.
- Install only a small set at first. Launch the game and test those additions before adding more, so a failure has a short list of possible causes.
- Use the manager’s controls to enable, disable, update, or remove a mod. Keep the manager’s view of installed files consistent instead of mixing tracked packages with unexplained loose files.
Beat Saber played through Steam is a PCVR example; Steam Support documents its SteamVR support. That fact confirms the PC-based path for that edition, not a general rule for every VR game.
Standalone Quest
The same BeastSaber guide describes a separate workflow using MBF and points readers to the BSMG Quest guide. Follow the Quest instructions for the exact Beat Saber release and headset software you have. Do not copy the PCVR steps, PC loader files, or PC plug-ins onto the standalone installation.

BeatVortex as another PC workflow
BeatVortex documentation describes a Vortex extension that browses approved BeatMods entries, downloads archives, checks dependencies, and lets you enable mods. Its documented sequence is:
- Open the BeatVortex-supported game profile and verify the selected Beat Saber version.
- Browse the approved entries and inspect each item’s requirements.
- Download the mod archive through the extension.
- Review the dependency prompt and install the required companion packages.
- Enable the mod, launch the game, and test it before adding more.
- When a game update arrives, check compatibility again. BeatVortex notes that manual version selection may be necessary.
BeatVortex also notes that loose DLL files do not fit its archive-oriented workflow as neatly. A package that is easy to track and remove is safer than an unexplained file dropped into a folder, but the extension is a tool-specific example rather than a universal recommendation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoosing among loaders and managers
If a game has more than one route, compare the routes on practical capabilities rather than popularity.

| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Platform support | Does it support your exact PCVR or standalone headset path? |
| Version coverage | Does it support the game version installed today, or must you select or downgrade a version? |
| Runtime and loader | Is the required build for Unity Mono, Il2Cpp, .NET Framework, IPA, or another runtime? |
| Dependency handling | Does the manager identify and install prerequisites, or must you resolve them manually? |
| Lifecycle controls | Can you disable, uninstall, and update a package without hunting for leftover files? |
| Recovery behavior | Can you return to an unmodded state if the game stops launching? |
A manager can reduce file-copy mistakes, but it cannot make an incompatible plug-in compatible. The mod’s own requirements and the loader’s compatibility information remain authoritative.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A safe, incremental installation procedure
- Identify the target. Write down the exact title, edition, headset platform, launcher, and installed game version.
- Read the mod page completely. Note the supported versions, loader, runtime, dependencies, installation location, and removal instructions.
- Verify the framework. Use the loader’s game-specific documentation and compatibility table. For BepInEx, select the guide matching the game’s runtime and prefer a stable build unless the project requires otherwise.
- Prepare recovery. Know how to disable the package or remove the loader, and preserve important saves or custom data before changing game files.
- Install the loader first. Follow its exact directory and launch instructions. A successful game launch with only the loader installed gives you a useful baseline.
- Install dependencies. Add the required libraries or companion mods in the versions specified by the project.
- Add one or a few mods. Avoid a full catalog installation. Small batches make conflicts and version errors easier to isolate.
- Launch and test. Confirm that the game starts, the mod’s feature appears, and ordinary gameplay still works.
- Record the working set. Keep the game version, loader version, mod versions, and install method together. That record makes a future update or rollback much faster.
When a mod fails: symptoms and next actions
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing changes in game | Wrong platform build, disabled mod, missing loader, or wrong install directory | Check the platform and runtime, confirm the manager shows the mod as enabled, and verify the loader’s expected folder. |
| Game will not start | Incompatible game version, loader, dependency, or plug-in conflict | Disable the newest mod first, return to the last working set, then compare every version requirement. |
| Manager reports a missing dependency | A required companion package was not installed or is the wrong version | Use the manager’s dependency list or the mod’s requirements to install the specified companion. |
| Update broke several mods | The game changed before loaders or plug-ins caught up | Stop adding files, check compatibility announcements, and use a supported game version if the chosen manager provides version selection. |
| Files cannot be removed cleanly | Manual loose files were mixed with managed archives | Follow the project’s removal instructions and restore the known-good installation rather than deleting random files. |
Change one variable at a time during diagnosis. If removing the newest plug-in restores startup, leave it disabled until its author publishes a build for your game version.
Updates, disabling and rollback
Game updates are the most common point at which a previously working combination becomes uncertain. Before updating, note the current game, loader, and mod versions. Afterward, check whether the loader and each plug-in explicitly support the new release. A manager may show an update or dependency warning, but the absence of a warning is not proof that every feature remains functional.
Use the manager’s disable control when testing. If the game still fails, remove the last added package according to the project’s instructions and return to the last recorded working set. Keep custom songs, saves, and other personal data separate from files you may need to replace; the exact backup method depends on the game and is not universal.
Questions to answer before pressing Install
- Am I running the PCVR or standalone build?
- What exact game version is installed?
- Which loader and runtime does this mod require?
- Are all dependencies present in the required versions?
- Can I disable or remove this package without guessing which files it changed?
- What is my recovery path if the game stops launching?
Bottom line
VR modding is a compatibility chain, not a single download. Match the mod to the game edition, headset platform, game version, loader, runtime, and dependencies; follow the platform-specific instructions; and add mods in small, reversible steps. Beat Saber demonstrates why PCVR and Quest need separate workflows, while BepInEx documentation demonstrates why runtime-specific builds and stable-versus-bleeding-edge choices matter. Treat every update as a new compatibility check, and you will know whether a mod is genuinely supported before it changes your installation.
