Visual product search lets you start with a photo instead of a product name. You take a picture, upload an image or screenshot, or select one object inside an existing image. The service analyzes the visual content, finds similar or potentially matching products, and may show prices, retailers, reviews or other shopping information. A result is a lead—not proof that the item is the exact same model—so verify the brand, model, dimensions, color, condition and seller before buying.
What visual product search does
Traditional product search begins with words such as “black leather ankle boots” or a model number. Visual search reverses that order: the image is the starting query, and text becomes optional refinement. This is useful when you do not know an object’s name, cannot describe a pattern precisely, or have only a screenshot from a video, social post or web page.
Google Lens and Pinterest Lens both document image-based discovery. Depending on the image, service, country and available catalog data, results can be broad visual matches, a recognized product, similar items, or shoppable listings. Neither service promises that every result is purchasable or that a visually similar item is identical to the photographed one.
The visual-search process, step by step
1. Supply an image
You can take a camera photo, choose an image from your device, upload a screenshot, or use an image already displayed in an app. Google Lens also lets you select an image area, while Pinterest lets you select an object or region inside a Pin. Selecting only the object is important when a photo contains several products or a distracting background.

2. The service processes visual content
The service examines visual signals in the submitted image and determines what part of the scene appears relevant. Public consumer documentation does not disclose a universal algorithm, confidence threshold or complete processing pipeline. It does establish the practical outcome: the system uses visual-search technology to process the image and produce search results.
3. Results are ranked as matches or shopping leads
Results may include visually similar images, an inferred product category, product details, retailer pages, prices, current deals or reviews. Google says Lens can show price information across retailers, deals, reviews and places to buy when it identifies a product. Pinterest says Lens can return similar items and shoppable results when available. Availability depends on the selected object, catalog coverage, location and the service’s current features.
4. Refine the query
Google Lens supports text refinements for attributes such as pattern, color or size. Pinterest supports refining similar-item results after selecting an object in a Pin. A refinement such as “blue,” “small,” or “striped” narrows the visual lead; it does not turn an uncertain match into a verified identification.

5. Verify before acting on the result
Open the retailer or product listing and compare the details that matter: manufacturer, model or style number, dimensions, materials, color name, included accessories, condition, shipping terms, return policy and seller identity. Product photographs can hide differences in scale, finish and construction, and catalogs sometimes contain duplicate or incorrectly labeled listings.
Visual similarity is not exact identification
A search can recognize the general object while missing the exact variant. Two chairs may share a silhouette but differ in width; two phones may have the same camera layout but be different generations; two garments may use a similar print but come from unrelated brands. Lighting, angle, cropping, occlusion and image quality also affect what can be matched.

- Use the result as a discovery shortcut: it can reveal the likely category, terminology and competing listings.
- Use independent listing evidence for confirmation: model numbers, dimensions and seller-provided specifications are stronger evidence than appearance alone.
- Be cautious with high-cost or safety-critical purchases: visually similar replacement parts, chargers, protective equipment or medical products may not be interchangeable.
No independent comparative accuracy percentage is established for the consumer services described here. Treat claims of an exact match as something to verify, not as a guarantee supplied by the search interface.
Google Lens and Pinterest Lens: what each documents

Google reported nearly 20 billion visual searches per month in 2024, with 20 percent described as shopping-related, and said its Shopping Graph contained more than 45 billion products. These are figures Google published on October 3, 2024; they are company-reported descriptions, not independent measurements or audits.
How a catalog-based system can match an image
Consumer products do not expose every internal component, but Google Cloud Vision Product Search provides a documented developer-side example. A developer creates a product set, adds product images and metadata, and indexes that catalog. A query can then supply an image through a Cloud Storage URI, a web URL or a base64-encoded image. The service compares the query with the indexed product set and returns catalog matches.
This example explains one catalog-matching design; it is not evidence that Google Lens, Pinterest Lens or every retail application uses the same architecture. A consumer service may also use broader web or shopping indexes, object selection and ranking signals that are not publicly specified.
What happens to images in Google visual search
Visual Search History is a separate control
Google Search Help states that Visual Search History is off by default. When it is enabled for an eligible account and service, images used for visual searches may be saved in Web & App Activity. Google says saved images may be used to improve the visual-search experience and related technologies, including model training.

Google’s wording is conditional: eligibility can depend on account type, locale, app version and device. The setting should therefore be checked in the account and app you actually use rather than assumed to apply universally.

Disabling Visual Search History means Google will not save new visual-search images as part of Web & App Activity. Visual search can continue to work, and the control does not itself turn off Web & App Activity. Images previously saved may remain available for improvement of visual-search technology until they are removed or otherwise no longer needed.
Reviewers and deletion controls
Google says images saved to Visual Search History can be eligible for review by trained human reviewers when Visual Search History Donation is on. This is a conditional eligibility statement, not a claim that every image is reviewed. Google’s controls allow users to review and delete activity and download saved images. Google also notes that it may delete saved images sooner than the retention period a user selected when they are no longer needed for service improvement.
Where to check
- Open the Google account or Search settings associated with the Lens activity.
- Find Visual Search History and check whether it is on or off.
- Review the related Web & App Activity controls; switching Visual Search History off does not switch this broader activity setting off.
- Use the activity review, deletion and download controls if saved visual searches need to be managed.
Labels and eligibility can differ by account, country, device and app version. If a control is absent, consult the current Google Search Help instructions for that account rather than assuming the image is or is not retained.
What is known about Pinterest image handling
Pinterest’s Lens help explains the permissions required to use the camera and photo library and describes selecting and searching imagery in a Pin. The available user instructions do not establish a retention period for submitted Lens images, whether those images are used to train models, whether human reviewers can access them, or how deletion works.

Do not transfer Google’s Visual Search History rules to Pinterest. Before submitting a sensitive image to Pinterest, read the current Pinterest privacy disclosures and account settings for your region. The same caution applies to any other visual-search service whose image-handling policy is not explicit.
Privacy precautions before uploading a photo
Visual search needs enough of the object to work, not every detail in the original frame. Crop the image before submission when possible, removing faces, postal addresses, identity documents, computer screens, vehicle plates and unrelated people. Cropping is practical risk reduction, not a guarantee that the remaining image cannot identify someone or reveal context.
- Use a copy: preserve the original locally and upload a cropped version.
- Check permissions: review camera and photo-library access, especially on shared devices.
- Inspect account settings: look for image-history, activity, donation, deletion and download controls.
- Consider sensitivity: do not upload confidential work, legal, medical or identity documents merely to identify an incidental object.
- Verify the destination: a result can lead to a retailer or external page with its own tracking and privacy practices.
Choosing a visual-search tool
Instead of asking which service is universally “most accurate,” match the tool to the job and the controls you need. Compare these questions before you submit an image:

For a one-off identification, crop tightly and compare several returned listings. For repeated shopping research, keep notes on the exact model and specifications so a visually similar substitute is not mistaken for the original.

The result identifies the wrong object
Crop to the target object and rerun the search. Remove background clutter, reflections and other products. If the item is partly hidden, take a clearer image from another angle.

The results are similar but not useful
Add a text refinement for a visible attribute such as color, pattern or size. Search again with a close-up of a distinctive detail, such as a label, fastener or sole, while avoiding unrelated personal information.
No shopping listing appears
The item may be outside the service’s catalog, unavailable in your region, incorrectly recognized or not currently offered for sale. Pinterest specifically notes that shoppable results are available only in some cases. Use the visual result to identify descriptive terms, then verify listings manually.
The service asks for permissions
Camera and photo-library access is required for the corresponding Lens workflows. Grant only the permission needed for the task, and revoke it later in the device’s app-permission settings if continuous access is unnecessary.
You are worried about a saved image
For Google, inspect Visual Search History and Web & App Activity, then use the available review, deletion and download controls. Remember that disabling the setting does not automatically erase previously saved activity. For Pinterest or another service, consult its current privacy documentation because Google’s controls do not apply.
Bottom line for buyers
Visual product search is best understood as image-led discovery. It can turn an unknown object or screenshot into useful product language, similar items and, sometimes, retailer information. The technology’s private ranking and recognition details are not fully disclosed, and no public accuracy percentage establishes that a result is the exact item pictured. Verify specifications and sellers before purchasing.
Privacy depends on the service and the settings attached to your account. Google documents an off-by-default Visual Search History control and explains how enabled history can be stored in Web & App Activity and used to improve visual-search systems. Pinterest’s user instructions document how Lens search works but do not answer the equivalent retention and training questions. Crop sensitive details first, then check the service’s current controls before you upload.
