A virtual power plant (VPP) links resources such as home batteries, solar-plus-storage systems, electric vehicles, smart thermostats and water heaters so an operator can coordinate them for grid support. There is no standard U.S. household payout: what you receive depends on your location, eligible equipment, program rules, measured performance and contract.
What a virtual power plant does
A VPP is a coordinated group of distributed energy resources (DERs). Individually, these devices are small; together, software and an operator or aggregator can shift electricity use, reduce demand during peak periods or dispatch stored energy when the grid needs it.
The U.S. Department of Energy says 30–60 GW of VPP capacity is already on the grid using commercially available technology. It also estimates that the country needs approximately 200 GW of additional peak-demand resources by 2030. DOE says 80–160 GW of VPP capacity by 2030 could address 10–20% of peak load and save on the order of $10 billion in annual grid costs; those are conditional projections, not achieved savings or a forecast of household earnings. DOE’s VPP overview explains the system-level context.

- Check whether your equipment qualifies. Programs may accept a battery, solar-plus-storage system, EV or charger, thermostat, water heater or another flexible load. Technical capability alone does not establish local eligibility.
- Enroll through a program or aggregator. The operator groups many small devices into a resource that can provide useful grid services. In some programs, participation is indirect through a third-party aggregator; others are retail utility programs.
- Allow the agreed grid response. Depending on the equipment and contract, the operator may shift EV charging or heating, request temporary demand reduction, or dispatch battery energy during a peak or other grid need. Automated controls and the customer’s ability to override them vary by offer.
- Receive compensation under the offer’s rules. Rewards may depend on availability, energy delivered, demand reduced, event participation or a bill-credit formula. Read the contract to see how the program measures and pays for the service.
How much does a virtual power plant pay?
There is no reliable nationwide rate or typical household check established by the reviewed sources. The U.S. Department of Energy describes rewards for grid services, while the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) explains that wholesale-market compensation is paid to an aggregator, which then shares it with participating DER owners according to their contracts. Retail utility programs may instead offer bill credits, enrollment incentives or event payments. Ask for the actual terms available for your address and device before counting on income. FERC’s Order No. 2222 explainer describes the wholesale-market path.

One published payment-design figure—and what it means
The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) stated a typical avoidable-cost range of $200–$300 per kW for average performance over the event season in its December 2025 VPP best-practices factsheet. This is an industry association’s guidance for program payment design—not a universal utility tariff, guaranteed payment or verified average household payout. Do not multiply it by a battery’s rated capacity as an earnings estimate without confirming the program’s payment unit, performance measurement and tariff. SEIA’s VPP best-practices factsheet gives the context.
Common ways offers calculate compensation
- Energy payment: Compensation is tied to electricity delivered or demand reduced under the relevant program or market rules.
- Capacity or availability payment: Payment may be for committing to be available when needed, rather than for energy actually delivered.
- Retail program reward: A utility or state program may use bill credits, event payments, enrollment incentives or another method; no national standard is established.
- Wholesale revenue share: An aggregator participates in a market and distributes compensation according to the customer contract.
What Order No. 2222 means for households
FERC Order No. 2222 is intended to make it easier for aggregations of DERs to participate in organized wholesale markets operated by regional transmission organizations and independent system operators (RTOs and ISOs). A household generally does not bid its battery into a wholesale market alone: it participates through an aggregator. FERC puts it plainly: “The direct market participant would be a DER aggregator.”

The order does not apply in Texas’s ERCOT market, which is outside FERC jurisdiction; ERCOT has a separate pilot effort. Implementation timing also varies by region. On FERC’s explainer as of October 7, 2026, ISO New England’s energy and ancillary-services date was November 1, 2026; PJM’s stated date was February 1, 2028; MISO’s phases extended to 2029; and SPP showed a proposed second-quarter 2030 date. These are the dates listed at that time, not a guarantee that schedules remain unchanged. Existing retail programs may also restrict simultaneous participation or overlapping compensation. Check FERC’s explainer and the terms of the program serving your location for current status.

- Payment: Is it guaranteed, based on availability, or dependent on measured performance? What metric is used—kW available, kWh discharged, load reduction, event attendance or something else?
- Event demands: How long and how often can events occur? Which season applies, how much notice will you receive, and are there limits on calls?
- Device control: What battery reserve must remain? Are exports allowed? Which settings can the operator change, and what control or override do you retain?
- Contract and exit: How long is the commitment? Can you opt out of an event or leave the program, and are there fees or limits?
- Other programs: Could participation affect net metering, another incentive or an existing utility program?
- Equipment: Is your current device eligible? Does enrollment actually require a new purchase, or can you participate with equipment you already have?
SEIA’s recommendations—including performance-linked payments, battery export permissions, event limits and no opt-out fee or limit—are policy principles, not guaranteed features of a local offer. Confirm the terms in your own agreement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can my home battery join a virtual power plant?
Possibly, but the answer depends on whether a program serving your address accepts your battery and how its operating rules fit your needs. A battery purchase does not guarantee enrollment or earnings. Before buying equipment for VPP participation, verify eligibility, export permissions, reserve requirements, event control and compensation with the utility or aggregator offering the program.
