Virtual error cancellation (VEC) is a proposed quantum error-mitigation method, not a replacement for quantum error correction (QEC) and not another name for zero-noise extrapolation (ZNE). In the October 2026 preprint by Oles Shtanko, Saswata Roy, Shashwat Kumar and Zlatko Minev, VEC uses syndrome records produced by a logical-circuit experiment and applies a more powerful decoder in classical post-processing. It improves estimates after the circuit runs rather than physically repairing the quantum state during execution.
QEC protects information while a computation is running by encoding logical qubits into many physical qubits and processing syndrome measurements. ZNE runs deliberately noise-scaled versions of a circuit and extrapolates measured observables toward the zero-noise limit. The practical choice depends on what data your workflow exposes, how much circuit control and sampling it can afford, and whether the goal is state protection during execution or a less-biased estimate at the end.
What the three methods are designed to do
Virtual error cancellation: mitigation from syndrome records
VEC, as defined in the preprint “Measure Now, Mitigate Later: Virtual Error Cancellation for Logical Quantum Circuits” (arXiv:2610.12400, submitted October 8, 2026), starts with a logical quantum circuit that already produces error-correction syndrome data. A low-latency decoder can operate during the experiment so the computation proceeds, while a higher-complexity decoder analyzes the stored syndrome record afterward. The post-processing combines that information with the circuit outcomes to reduce bias in an estimated observable.
The word virtual describes where the extra correction effort occurs: in classical computation after measurement, rather than through additional real-time operations on the quantum device. VEC does not restore a measured qubit or retroactively apply a gate. It changes the estimator built from the run’s outcomes and syndrome history.

Quantum error correction: protect a logical state during computation
QEC encodes one logical qubit across multiple physical qubits. Repeated syndrome measurements reveal information about likely errors without directly measuring away the logical state. A decoder interprets those syndromes, and the control system can update a correction, a frame, or subsequent operations while the computation continues.
QEC therefore changes the physical execution itself. Its objective is to keep logical information reliable for longer and, in a fault-tolerant regime, to make logical error rates fall as the code and hardware improve. The resource cost is substantial: extra qubits, repeated measurements, decoding hardware or software, and carefully engineered control. IBM Quantum Learning summarizes the distinction by noting that error correction “encodes information across many physical qubits and checks the consistency in that information to preserve information in a single logical qubit.”
Zero-noise extrapolation: estimate an unobserved zero-noise result
ZNE does not primarily use syndrome data. Instead, it executes a circuit at several deliberately increased noise strengths, measures the observable at each strength, and fits a model that is extrapolated to noise strength zero. Noise amplification can use circuit modifications such as identity insertions or other supported scaling procedures.
A 2020 study by Andre He, Benjamin Nachman, Wibe A. de Jong and Christian W. Bauer examined hardware-agnostic identity-insertion methods with polynomial extrapolation in simulated circuits. ZNE can be useful when the device can reproduce a controlled relationship between the original circuit and its noise-scaled variants. Its estimate is only as credible as that scaling relationship, the fit model, and the sampling precision.
How VEC operates in a logical-circuit workflow
- Run an encoded circuit. The algorithm executes a logical circuit protected by an error-correcting code and measures the ordinary computational outputs.
- Collect syndrome information. Ancilla or parity measurements generate a time-ordered record indicating where the code detected consistency violations. VEC needs this record; a workflow that keeps only final bit strings cannot apply the reported protocol.
- Decode with low latency. A decoder suitable for the experiment operates quickly enough to support real-time control, feed-forward, or logical-frame updates. The point is to keep the device running without waiting for the most expensive possible analysis.
- Retain the complete record. Syndrome results, decoder decisions, measurement outcomes and relevant circuit metadata are saved for offline analysis. Data retention and timestamp alignment are part of the method, not optional bookkeeping.
- Re-decode offline. A higher-complexity decoder can examine the full record after execution. It can use information that was unavailable to the low-latency path or would have been too expensive to calculate within the device’s timing budget.
- Form a corrected estimator. The post-processing combines decoded information with the measured outcomes to reduce estimated logical-circuit bias. The quantum state is not altered after measurement; the reported expectation value or probability estimate is.
The authors report numerical simulations of this full-stack dual-decoder idea, including a distance-7 rotated surface code. In those simulations, they report “more than three orders of magnitude of suppression compared to the decoded logical error rate.” That figure describes the simulated protocol and its reference logical error rate; it is not a claim that current hardware error rates are reduced by the same amount.

Why VEC is related to QEC but is not QEC itself
VEC depends on an error-corrected workflow: without syndrome measurements, there is no syndrome record for the method to reinterpret. That dependency can make VEC look like a new form of QEC. The distinction is the operation being claimed. QEC uses redundancy and syndrome information to preserve a logical state during the computation. VEC accepts the noisy execution and uses its records later to improve a statistical estimate.

A low-latency decoder may still be necessary for the underlying logical experiment. VEC adds a second, offline decoding path; it does not eliminate the code, the syndrome measurements or the real-time requirements needed to run the logical circuit. It is best described as mitigation layered on top of QEC infrastructure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMitigation also has a different success criterion. QEC asks whether logical information survives operations and storage with an acceptably low logical error rate. VEC asks whether an expectation value, probability or other reported quantity is less biased than the result produced by the ordinary decoding path. A better estimate does not mean that the physical state was made fault tolerant.
How ZNE differs from both VEC and QEC
ZNE changes the experiment before it changes the estimate
With ZNE, one normally creates a family of related circuits. For example, identity insertions can lengthen the effective exposure to gate noise while leaving the ideal unitary approximately unchanged. The measured values are then fitted as a function of the effective noise scale and evaluated at the zero-noise intercept.
This means ZNE cannot obtain its answer from one ordinary execution alone. It needs multiple noise levels, enough samples at each level, and a model whose behavior near zero noise is credible. Excessive amplification can make the largest-noise runs so variable that extrapolation becomes unstable.
VEC does not require deliberate noise scaling
The reported VEC protocol keeps the circuit execution and uses information already generated by the logical-circuit experiment. It therefore avoids the specific ZNE workflow of modifying circuits to create several noise strengths. VEC can still demand substantial classical work and data storage, and it relies on syndrome information and a decoder; it is not a free, single-shot correction.

Neither method guarantees a universal improvement
ZNE performance depends on how faithfully the chosen scaling procedure represents a smooth noise family and on the extrapolation model. VEC performance depends on the code, decoder pair, syndrome quality and noise process. A 2022 analysis of fundamental mitigation limits and a 2023 cross-platform study both emphasize that mitigation benefits are noise-model- and computer-dependent. Results from one platform should not be promoted as a universal ranking.

Do not confuse VEC with probabilistic error cancellation
IBM’s conceptual material notes that probabilistic error cancellation (PEC) has sometimes been called “virtual error correction.” That historical label is not the same named method as the VEC proposal in the 2026 preprint. PEC generally uses a characterized noise model and a quasi-probability representation to combine results from modified operations, often at a substantial sampling cost. VEC, in the cited proposal, is defined around QEC syndrome records and a dual-decoder post-processing workflow.
When reading a paper or software option, check whether “virtual” refers to PEC terminology or to the specific VEC protocol. Similar words can conceal different required data, circuits and assumptions.
Choosing an approach for a real experiment
Choose a QEC-first workflow when state protection is the requirement
If the computation must preserve a logical state through many operations, QEC is the foundational choice. Evaluate the code distance, physical error rates, measurement fidelity, decoder latency and available qubit count. Mitigation cannot substitute for the real-time protection and redundancy required by a fault-tolerant architecture.
Consider VEC when syndrome data already exist
VEC is a candidate when the system already runs logical circuits, stores syndrome records and can afford an offline decoder. It is especially relevant when the online decoder must be fast but a slower, more informative analysis can be performed later. Confirm that data capture, synchronization and decoder software are reliable before attributing an improvement to the method.
Consider ZNE when controlled noise scaling is easier than syndrome access
ZNE may fit a near-term workflow that exposes ordinary circuit outcomes but not full syndrome streams, provided the control stack can generate noise-scaled variants without changing the ideal computation in an uncontrolled way. Budget for extra circuits, samples and fit diagnostics.
Use a measurement plan rather than a universal winner
- Identify whether the target is a protected quantum state or a final estimated observable.
- Record which data are available: ordinary outcomes, syndrome histories, calibration data or all three.
- Estimate the number of circuit executions and shots the experiment can afford.
- Measure decoder latency and offline compute time separately.
- Test sensitivity to plausible noise models and to changes in the device.
- Report uncertainty, discarded shots, fitting choices and decoder settings alongside the final estimate.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Calling mitigation “correction”
Say that VEC or ZNE reduces estimated bias or mitigates error. Do not say that either method physically corrected the state after measurement. A post-processed expectation value and a successfully corrected logical qubit are different outputs.

Applying VEC without syndrome records
Final computational bit strings alone do not contain the information used by the reported VEC protocol. Preserve syndrome measurements with shot identifiers and timing metadata from the start of the experiment.

Generalizing a simulation result to hardware
The VEC result currently described is a new, non-peer-reviewed preprint with numerical evidence. The distance-7 rotated surface-code example and the reported more-than-three-orders suppression are bounded by that simulation setting. They do not establish a broad hardware capability or a head-to-head victory over ZNE or QEC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What evidence exists today
QEC is an established framework, but its practical performance varies with the code, hardware and noise environment. ZNE has published methodological work, including the 2020 identity-insertion study, yet its usefulness still depends on controlled scaling and extrapolation. VEC is newer: the cited October 8, 2026 preprint proposes a protocol and reports numerical simulations, not a general-purpose hardware demonstration.
No single benchmark in the cited material compares VEC, QEC and ZNE on the same device, circuit family, code, shot budget and error model. Therefore, a claim that one method “wins” in all settings would exceed the available evidence. A fair comparison must hold those variables constant and publish both accuracy and resource costs.
FAQ
Is VEC fault tolerant?
Not by itself. VEC is a mitigation layer that processes syndrome information after execution. Fault tolerance requires an architecture in which encoded operations and error correction keep logical errors under control throughout the computation.

Can VEC and ZNE be combined?
In principle, a study could apply multiple estimators, but combining them would introduce additional assumptions, circuits or post-processing choices. The cited sources do not establish a standard combined protocol, so any hybrid should be validated as a new experiment rather than treated as an automatic improvement.
Does VEC remove the need for a decoder?
No. The reported design uses a low-latency decoder during the experiment and a higher-complexity decoder afterward. VEC changes how decoder information is used; it does not make decoding unnecessary.
What should a paper report when claiming a VEC improvement?
It should identify the code and distance, decoder pair, syndrome data retained, noise model, circuit and shot counts, estimator definition, uncertainty, and whether the result comes from simulation or hardware. Those details determine whether the improvement can be reproduced or compared fairly.
