Video-game companies rarely depend on a single sale. They use a layered model: a premium game or free download brings players in, then downloadable content (DLC), live-service updates, virtual currency, microtransactions, subscriptions and licensing generate additional revenue. The money a player spends is not always the same as the revenue a publisher reports, because platform fees, refunds, taxes and accounting rules affect when and how sales appear in financial statements.

The basic revenue model: acquire players, then monetize engagement

A publisher can earn money at several points in a game’s life. A traditional buy-to-play title collects most of its price when a player purchases the game. A free-to-play title removes that entry price and tries to earn from a smaller share of paying players over a longer period. Many modern releases combine both approaches: an upfront purchase, optional expansions, recurring content and cosmetic or convenience purchases.

Electronic Arts describes four broad categories in its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K: full games sold as digital downloads or packaged goods; live services, primarily extra content; subscriptions that provide games, in-game content or online services; and licensing games to third parties for distribution or hosting. That framework is useful because it separates the way money is collected from the design of any one game.

“Live service” and “microtransaction” are related but not interchangeable. A live service is an ongoing operation—servers, updates, events, support and community management. It can include DLC, subscriptions and in-game purchases. A microtransaction describes the size and repeated nature of a purchase, such as a small virtual-currency top-up, regardless of whether the surrounding game is formally labeled a live service.

1. Base-game sales: the initial payment

Premium digital and physical copies

In the simplest model, the publisher sells a complete game for a one-time price. The transaction may be a physical disc or cartridge sold through retail, or a digital download delivered by a console, PC or mobile storefront. The publisher’s net receipts are lower than the displayed consumer price after retailer margins, platform deductions, payment processing, taxes, refunds and other adjustments.

Electronic Arts reported $1.478 billion in digital full-game-download net revenue for fiscal 2025 and $524 million in packaged-goods net revenue for the same fiscal year. Those are the company’s reported net-revenue categories, not a universal price for a game and not the total amount players paid at checkout.

Why digital distribution matters

Digital storefronts reduce manufacturing and physical distribution requirements and make updates, patches and additional content easier to deliver. They also give storefront operators a role in the transaction and expose publishers to regional pricing, local taxes, refund rules and platform policies. EA reported that 73% of its console units were sold digitally in fiscal 2024, illustrating how important digital channels have become for a large publisher.

2. DLC and live services: selling more after launch

What counts as DLC

Downloadable content is any additional material delivered after or alongside the base game. It can be a large story expansion, a map pack, playable characters, missions, a season pass, a sports roster update or smaller cosmetic bundles. Some DLC is sold once; other content is included in a recurring program or battle-pass style season.

Live-service revenue extends this idea over the operating life of a game. The publisher keeps servers running, schedules events, fixes defects, adds content and gives players reasons to return. Continued engagement creates more opportunities to sell expansions, passes, virtual currency and optional items than a one-time launch sale would provide.

Evidence from a publisher filing

EA reported $5.461 billion in “live services and other” net revenue in fiscal 2025. The category was primarily associated with extra content in franchises including Apex Legends, EA SPORTS FC and The Sims 4. Because the category combines several forms of ongoing content, it should not be read as a pure microtransaction total.

Why the model is attractive—and demanding

A successful live service can produce a steadier stream than a launch-only game, but it requires continuing expenditure on development teams, servers, customer support, moderation, security and marketing. A weak update schedule, technical outage or loss of player interest can reduce spending quickly. The publisher must balance content cadence with production cost: more content can increase engagement, yet content that sells poorly does not recover its development expense.

3. Microtransactions and virtual currency

What players buy

Microtransactions are repeated, generally smaller purchases made inside a game. They may buy cosmetic outfits, emotes, weapon appearances, character customization, convenience features, progression boosts, randomized items or virtual currency. In some games they are optional decorations; in others they can affect progression or competitive power. The business term describes the transaction pattern, not whether a purchase is fair or desirable.

Virtual currency lets a game present a consistent in-game unit while the player pays with real money outside the game. A player may buy a bundle of currency, spend part of it on an item and retain a balance for later. Bundles, discounts and expiration rules can change how much currency a player buys compared with the price of a single item.

How publishers account for these purchases

Take-Two defines recurrent consumer spending as including revenue from virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases and in-game advertising. Its accounting explanation notes that revenue recognized over time can include game-related services, separate virtual-currency transactions and in-game purchases. When the company is still obligated to provide ongoing access or service, it may recognize revenue over an estimated service period rather than on the exact date the player pays.

That timing distinction matters. A player’s payment date, the publisher’s bookings, and recognized revenue in a quarterly report can all differ. A prepaid season, currency balance or continuing service may be recorded as a contract liability until the related obligation is delivered or the estimated service period passes.

4. Subscriptions: recurring access instead of ownership

Subscriptions charge monthly or annually for a package of benefits. Depending on the service, the package can include a catalog of full games, early trials, in-game content, online multiplayer access, discounts or other benefits. EA describes EA Play in these terms: access to a selection of full games, in-game content, online services and related benefits.

Subscription economics depend on retention, catalog value and service costs. A subscriber who stays for a year is worth more than one who cancels after a trial, but the publisher must keep adding value without allowing content and infrastructure costs to grow faster than recurring receipts. A subscription can also broaden the audience for a game, potentially creating later sales of expansions or in-game items, although that follow-on effect is not guaranteed.

5. Licensing and third-party distribution

Licensing is a separate route from selling directly through a publisher-controlled storefront. A rights holder can authorize another company or service to distribute, host or bundle a game and its content. The agreement may cover a platform, territory, device category or period and can use an advance, royalties, a revenue share or a combination.

Licensing can reach audiences that the publisher would not efficiently serve alone. It can also reduce direct control over pricing, promotion, technical support and customer data. Financial statements may present licensing proceeds differently from direct sales, so the contract terms and the publisher’s accounting policy matter when comparing companies.

6. Where the money is made: platform and geography

Platform mix

A game’s audience may be divided among consoles, PCs and mobile devices, each with different storefront rules, hardware capabilities, payment methods and player behavior. Studio Wildcard reported the following fiscal 2024 revenue mix:

Platform Share of Studio Wildcard revenue Qualification
Console 42.4% Fiscal 2024 company-reported share
PC 48.1% Fiscal 2024 company-reported share
Mobile 5.5% Fiscal 2024 company-reported share
Other or not specified Not stated The reported percentages total 96%; the filing excerpt does not identify the remainder

Platform percentages are not a universal industry split. They describe one company’s fiscal year and may reflect a particular portfolio, release schedule and geographic footprint.

From checkout price to net revenue

Suppose a player pays a listed price for a game or currency bundle. The publisher may then account for a storefront or platform deduction, payment-processing costs, sales or value-added taxes, refunds, chargebacks, regional adjustments and the cost of physical distribution where applicable. The amount left is closer to net receipts, but accounting recognition can still be deferred when the publisher owes future content or service.

Regional pricing also changes the relationship between units and revenue. One million units sold at different local prices does not produce the same consumer spend as one million units sold at a single price. Exchange rates and local taxes can further change reported results when a company operates globally.

7. Revenue, bookings and consumer spending are different measures

These terms are often mixed together:

  • Consumer spending or gross bookings: the amount players pay before some deductions, depending on the company’s definition.
  • Bookings: a company-specific measure of orders or purchases, often including amounts that will be recognized as revenue later.
  • Net revenue: the amount reported after the company’s applicable deductions and accounting adjustments.
  • Recognized revenue: the portion recorded in the relevant accounting period after performance obligations are satisfied or allocated over an estimated service period.

Publisher filings use different definitions, fiscal calendars and net-versus-gross presentations. Comparing two headline figures without checking those details can produce a false ranking.

8. Comparing monetization models

Model Payment timing What the player receives Revenue predictability What the publisher must sustain
Premium base game Mostly one-time at purchase Complete game access Front-loaded around launch; sequel and catalog sales are uncertain Launch quality, distribution and marketing
Paid DLC or expansion Additional one-time or seasonal payments New story, systems, maps, characters or other content Depends on attach rate and content reception Ongoing production and compatibility support
Microtransactions Repeated purchases Cosmetics, currency, convenience, progression or randomized items Depends heavily on active and paying users Engagement, item production, payment security and customer support
Subscription Monthly or annual recurring charge Catalog access, online services, content or benefits More recurring when retention is strong Catalog value, infrastructure and churn management
Licensing Contract-defined fees or royalties Third-party distribution or hosting rights Depends on contract terms and partner performance Rights management and partner oversight

Premium sales generally monetize the purchase decision first. Live services and microtransactions monetize continued engagement. Subscriptions exchange ownership of individual titles for recurring access. None of these models guarantees profitability: development, marketing, server, customer-care, platform and compliance costs determine whether revenue exceeds expenses.

9. The industry scale and what one headline number means

Boston Consulting Group’s December 2024 report estimated total games revenue at $139 billion for 2024 and described in-game purchases as microtransactions involving virtual goods and downloadable content. That figure is an industry estimate whose scope and methodology belong to the report; it is not a publisher’s net-income figure and should not be treated as the amount companies retained after fees and costs.

Industry totals can combine different geographies, platforms and revenue definitions. A publisher’s annual filing, by contrast, may exclude businesses it does not control, use a different fiscal year and separate full-game sales from live services. Always read the accompanying definition before using a market number in a comparison.

10. How the money cycle works for a typical game

  1. Acquisition: The publisher funds development, marketing and distribution to attract an audience through a paid launch or a free download.
  2. Activation: Players install the game, create accounts and begin using servers, matchmaking or other online services.
  3. Initial monetization: Premium buyers provide upfront sales, while free-to-play players provide a potential audience for optional purchases.
  4. Retention: Updates, events, new modes and community support encourage players to return.
  5. Expansion: The publisher offers DLC, passes, subscriptions, virtual currency or other add-ons suited to the game’s audience.
  6. Recognition: Finance teams record amounts according to the contract and accounting policy, which may spread some receipts over the service period.
  7. Portfolio management: The company evaluates engagement, spending, content cost and infrastructure expense before continuing, changing or winding down support.

11. Consumer-facing trade-offs and fairness questions

The same mechanism can feel different depending on what it sells. Cosmetic items do not change game power, while progression boosts can alter pacing and competitive balance. Randomized rewards make the final item uncertain; clear prices and direct purchases make the exchange easier to understand. Season content can provide a predictable schedule but may pressure players to play before a deadline.

Readers evaluating a game should check whether purchases are optional, whether multiplayer competition is affected, how refunds work, whether virtual currency can be converted back into money, and what happens to purchased content if servers close. These are product-policy questions rather than accounting categories, but they determine how a monetization model is experienced.

12. What to check in a publisher’s financial report

  • Read the definition of each category, especially “live services,” “recurrent consumer spending” and “bookings.”
  • Confirm the fiscal year and whether figures are gross or net of platform and other deductions.
  • Separate digital full-game downloads, packaged goods, add-on content and subscriptions instead of adding unlike categories without checking scope.
  • Look for deferred-revenue or service-period explanations when purchases provide future content or access.
  • Check geographic and platform mix before assuming a result applies to the whole market.
  • Compare revenue with development, marketing, server, support and general operating costs; a large revenue stream is not the same as a large profit.

Conclusion

Video-game companies make money by stacking complementary streams. Base-game sales acquire customers and can recover a large portion of development and launch costs. DLC and live services extend a game’s commercial life. Microtransactions and virtual currency turn frequent engagement into repeat spending, while subscriptions create recurring access payments and licensing opens additional distribution channels. The meaningful number in any report depends on its definition, platform, geography, fiscal period and recognition rules.
