A game cinematic is built in layers, not recorded in one step. A typical sequence moves from storyboards and previsualization to actor performance capture or hand-keyed animation, then through data cleanup, retargeting, animation revision, camera and timeline work, lighting, effects, rendering, and finally integration with gameplay. Motion capture provides a detailed performance starting point; it does not produce a finished cutscene by itself.

What a video-game cinematic actually is

A cinematic is a directed sequence inside a game project. It may be an opening movie, a dialogue scene, a boss introduction, a transition between levels, or a short camera moment that plays while the player still has limited control. The finished result combines acting, character animation, camera language, environments, lighting, effects, sound, and game logic.

Some scenes are rendered as pre-made video files. Others are assembled and rendered by the game engine when they play. Many productions use both approaches: an engine-authored sequence for interactive transitions and an offline-rendered shot for a particularly demanding effect. The choice depends on visual requirements, runtime performance, iteration speed, and how much the sequence must react to gameplay.

1. Story, previs, and shot design establish the target

Before anyone records an actor, the team decides what the scene must communicate. A director, writer, storyboard artist, cinematic designer, and animator define the dramatic beats, character objectives, blocking, camera cuts, lens choices, and required environments. This stage prevents an expensive capture session from producing attractive motion that does not serve the story.

Previsualization turns a script into shots

Previs is a rough version of the scene made with simple models, temporary animation, and placeholder cameras. It answers practical questions: Where is each character standing? When does a character turn, sit, or cross the room? Which line receives a close-up? Can the camera move through the set without colliding with geometry? How long does the scene need to be?

Epic’s description of the Fortnite cinematic pipeline follows this broad progression: set design and motion capture lead to shot design, rigging, data import, effects, and final pixels. The important implication is that capture is one department in a chain, not the beginning and end of cinematic production.

Shot design fixes the technical brief

For each shot, the team records the intended action, framing, camera movement, environment, props, and effects. The brief can also specify whether the shot must run in real time, whether it can use a pre-rendered movie, and which gameplay variables must remain available. A scene that changes with the player’s selected character or inventory generally needs engine integration rather than a single fixed video file.

2. Performance capture records an actor’s movement and acting

In a capture volume, actors perform body movement and, when the production supports it, facial performance. Cameras track markers or other visual features on a tight capture suit. The system records the actor’s position and rotation over time, producing raw motion data rather than a finished animation.

Actors may repeat a take to adjust timing, emphasis, eyelines, or physical contact. Directors often capture several variations because editing and animation teams need choices. Naughty Dog described the demands plainly: “Performance capture is a long and time intensive process. It involves tight mocap suits, long hours, a ton of writing and often some fortuitous ad-lib.”

Body, face, voice, and props are separate problems

Body capture can track a walk, a fall, or a fight, but the character rig still needs the data mapped to it. Facial capture may use a separate camera system or facial markers and usually requires its own cleanup and artistic adjustment. Dialogue can be recorded during the performance or on a separate stage. Handheld props, weapons, furniture, and environmental contacts need additional tracking or animation work so that hands do not pass through objects.

Why raw capture contains errors

Markers can be hidden from cameras, briefly confused with another marker, or disturbed by fast movement. A foot may slide on the floor, a hand may miss a prop, or a character’s body may intersect a wall. Even a technically clean take may contain an accidental stumble, an unwanted glance, or timing that does not fit the final edit. These issues are normal reasons for a cleanup pass.

3. Cleanup and retargeting turn measurements into usable animation

A production pipeline first cleans the captured data, converts it into animation curves, and retargets those curves onto the game’s character skeleton. A GDC session description identifies these as core steps before the data reaches animators.

Cleanup removes tracking noise and repairs contacts

Animators and technical artists inspect the curves for spikes, jitter, gaps, and implausible rotations. They stabilize feet, restore hand contacts, correct the root motion, and remove accidental movement. Automated filters can handle repetitive noise, but important contacts and acting choices still require human review.

Retargeting maps one body to another

The captured actor and the digital character rarely share identical proportions. Retargeting maps the actor’s movement to the character’s skeleton while preserving the intended pose and timing. A tall actor’s stride may need adjustment for a shorter character; a creature with extra joints may require procedural rules or hand animation. Retargeting is therefore a translation step, not a copy-and-paste operation.

Curves make motion editable

Once movement is represented as animation curves, an animator can change the timing of a hand raise, rotate a head, exaggerate a pose, or blend two takes. Curves also allow the sequence to be synchronized with dialogue, camera cuts, effects, and gameplay events.

4. Animators refine the performance

Cleaned mocap is a high-fidelity starting point, but the final shot usually combines captured motion with hand-keyed animation. Animators fix poses, adjust rhythm, strengthen silhouettes, and make the action readable from the chosen camera.

Mocap and keyframes serve different strengths

Mocap captures nuanced weight shifts and spontaneous timing efficiently, especially for human performances. Keyframe animation gives precise control over stylized poses, impossible actions, creatures, and changes required by the edit. Ubisoft notes that mocap is realistic but resource-intensive, while keyframe animation can be long and tedious.

Ubisoft La Forge’s 2020 work on learned in-betweening addressed a specific keyframe problem: generating natural motion between sparse poses. The associated ACM SIGGRAPH 2020 paper was authored by Félix G. Harvey, Mike Yurick, Derek Nowrouzezahrai, and Christopher Pal. Ubisoft characterized the goal as “bridging the gap between motion capture and hand-animation by bringing MOCAP quality to the keyframe-animation pipeline.”

Secondary motion is layered after the main performance

Cloth, hair, muscles, accessories, and held objects may be simulated, driven procedurally, or animated by hand. These systems need collision settings and stable contacts. A cape that looks convincing in one pose can clip through a sword during a turn, so artists review the result in motion rather than trusting a single frame.

5. Cameras and editing are authored on a cinematic timeline

After character motion is usable, the team builds the shot sequence. In Unreal, Sequencer provides tracks, shots, takes, keyframes, camera animation, effects, and ways to blend cinematic animation with gameplay. The Cine Camera Actor supplies filming controls, while Take Recorder captures performances or gameplay for use in the sequence.

Camera work changes how the animation reads

A performance that looks natural in a wide shot may need different timing or posing in a close-up. Animators may make a gesture larger for a distant camera, shift an eyeline toward the lens, or hold a facial expression for an extra beat. Lens choice, depth of field, camera height, and movement establish emphasis and spatial continuity.

Editorial timing is part of animation

Editors and directors place cuts, dialogue, pauses, and reaction shots on the timeline. A cut can hide a difficult transition, but it can also expose a foot slide or a prop mismatch. Teams therefore review the whole edit repeatedly rather than approving each animation clip in isolation.

6. Lighting and effects complete the shot

Lighting artists establish exposure, color, shadow direction, rim light, and practical sources. Effects artists add particles, smoke, fire, rain, destruction, magic, muzzle flashes, and environmental motion. Materials, decals, volumetric effects, and post-processing determine how the scene appears at the final camera.

Real-time review lets departments see lighting, effects, depth of field, and motion blur earlier. It also reveals runtime constraints: a simulation that looks fine in a review render may be too expensive when dozens of characters and effects run during gameplay. Hair, cloth, muscles, and fat effects can require especially careful compromises.

7. Rendering produces review images and final pixels

Teams render the scene repeatedly for approval. Unreal’s Movie Render Queue outputs image sequences and supports final render settings and passes, allowing artists to create consistent review or delivery frames. Image sequences are useful because a failed frame can be replaced without encoding an entire movie again.

Real-time rendering favors iteration

In a real-time workflow, the engine displays the scene under conditions close to those the player will experience. Craig McPherson, an animation supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, said in Epic’s Animation Field Guide: “In a real-time workflow, you are ultimately more iterative, more collaborative, and more creative.” Artists can adjust a light or camera and immediately inspect the result, which shortens the feedback loop.

Offline rendering favors specialized quality

An offline renderer can spend substantially longer calculating a frame and may support effects or quality settings that are impractical at runtime. This remains useful for selected shots with demanding hair, cloth, volumetrics, or complex lighting. The trade-off is slower feedback and a less direct connection to the player’s actual runtime environment. Epic’s guide describes a pipeline in which Unreal serves as both a presentation medium and final renderer while noting that much animation may still be created offline and compiled into the engine.

Workflow Strength Trade-off Typical use
Engine-rendered real time Fast iteration and direct gameplay integration Bound by runtime performance and available effects Interactive cutscenes, branching scenes, and frequent review
Offline-rendered frames or video More freedom for expensive effects and quality settings Slower revisions and less flexibility during play Fixed showcase shots or sequences with exceptional render demands
Hybrid Uses engine integration where needed and offline quality where justified Requires two delivery paths and careful visual matching Projects that mix interactive scenes with premium hero shots

8. Engine integration makes the cinematic playable

A completed sequence must be bound to the correct character, environment, camera, audio, effects, and animation assets. Designers then connect it to gameplay events: entering a trigger, defeating an enemy, finishing a dialogue choice, or loading a level.

Unreal documentation covers blending Sequencer animation with gameplay and triggering sequences from events. Integration work also handles player control, animation state changes, collision, subtitles, save-state behavior, and what happens if the player skips or interrupts the scene.

Runtime checks prevent cinematic failures

  • Confirm that every referenced character, prop, camera, material, and effect is included in the build.
  • Test the sequence from each gameplay condition that can trigger it, not only from the editor timeline.
  • Check frame rate, memory use, streaming, and animation continuity on target hardware.
  • Verify skip, pause, subtitle, localization, and controller behavior.
  • Test transitions back to player control so the character does not appear in the wrong pose or location.

Why motion capture is not the final animation

Mocap supplies a detailed performance record. It does not choose the final camera, remove every tracking error, solve all contacts, match the proportions of a game rig, or decide how a scene should be edited. After capture, teams still clean the curves, retarget the skeleton, revise acting, animate faces and props, solve cloth and hair, light the set, render the result, and connect it to game events.

Ubisoft describes capture sessions and post-processing as resource-intensive and notes that teams often investigate reusing existing captures before scheduling new sessions. Reuse can save a new performance day, but the old motion still has to fit the new character, camera, timing, and story.

How studios choose between capture, keyframes, and reuse

Decision Prefer this when Primary cost or risk
New motion capture The scene depends on nuanced human acting or complex physical interaction Capture logistics, actor time, cleanup, and retargeting
Hand-keyed animation The action is highly stylized, non-human, or requires exact pose control Long authoring time and demanding revision work
Reuse existing capture A recorded performance already matches the character and dramatic need Retiming, adaptation, and possible mismatch with the new shot
Real-time final rendering The scene must react to gameplay or receive frequent visual iteration Runtime budgets and effect complexity
Offline final rendering The shot is fixed and needs effects beyond practical runtime limits Longer render and review cycles

The useful comparison is not “mocap versus animation.” Production normally combines them. The practical questions are how much capture fidelity the shot needs, how much cleanup the team can support, whether existing motion can be adapted, and whether the finished scene must respond to gameplay.

A simplified end-to-end example

Consider a guard who discovers the player in a warehouse. The director first blocks the discovery, turns, camera cut, line delivery, and exit. Previs tests whether the camera can move from a wide establishing shot to a close-up without losing the player’s position.

  1. Actors perform the guard’s turn, reaction, dialogue, and walk in a capture volume. Facial performance and voice are recorded as required by the production.
  2. Technical artists clean marker noise, stabilize the guard’s feet, repair the hand-to-door contact, and retarget the movement to the in-game skeleton.
  3. Animators adjust the head turn to land on the close-up, replace an unclear hand gesture, refine the facial reaction, and add the guard’s hand interaction with the door.
  4. The cinematic team places cameras, cuts, and timing in Sequencer, then adds a light flicker, dust, and a practical lamp reflection.
  5. Artists review the scene in real time, correct cloth intersection, and render image sequences through Movie Render Queue for approval.
  6. Designers bind the sequence to the detection event, blend the guard back into gameplay, and test the scene with different player positions and skip behavior.

Every step changes the usable result. The recorded movement is important, but the player sees only the final combination of performance, animation edits, camera, lighting, effects, rendering, and gameplay logic.

Common failure modes and their fixes

Foot sliding

Symptom: A planted foot drifts across the floor. Fix: Clean the animation curve, lock the contact during the planted interval, and adjust root motion so the body still travels naturally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hand or prop intersection

Symptom: Fingers pass through a weapon, door handle, or table. Fix: Rebuild the contact in keyframes, correct the prop’s tracked transform, and review the shot from the final camera.

Motion looks correct but reads poorly

Symptom: The actor’s subtle action disappears in the chosen framing. Fix: Exaggerate the pose or timing for that camera, revise the lens or cut, and preserve the dramatic intention rather than the raw movement.

Effects work in a render but fail in play

Symptom: A cloth, hair, or particle effect consumes too much runtime budget. Fix: Reduce simulation complexity, bake or simplify the effect, move the shot to an offline path if it is fixed, or redesign the effect around the gameplay requirement.

The scene breaks after the player skips it

Symptom: The character returns to gameplay in the wrong location, pose, or animation state. Fix: Define the handoff explicitly, set the gameplay transform and state at the end of the sequence, and test interruption as well as normal playback.

The central idea

Video-game cinematics are an assembly process. Capture records a performance; cleanup and retargeting make it usable; animators shape it for the character and camera; Sequencer organizes shots; lighting and effects establish the final image; rendering produces frames; and engine integration makes the sequence function inside a game. Real-time and offline methods are complementary production choices, not mutually exclusive categories.
