Video-game age ratings communicate two different things: an age category suggesting who a game may suit, and content descriptors identifying material that may have influenced that category or may matter to consumers. To judge nudity, sexual material, or violence accurately, read both parts of the official listing for the exact game, platform, release and region. A higher category alone does not identify the scene that drove it, and descriptors are guidance rather than a complete scene-by-scene inventory.
ESRB is the North American system discussed here. PEGI is a European example with its own labels and practices. Their numbers, letters and descriptor thresholds are not interchangeable.
What an age rating actually tells you
An age category is a recommendation about age appropriateness, not a guarantee that a game is suitable for every player at that age. The accompanying descriptors add content information. ESRB describes them this way: Content Descriptors indicate content that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern.
The wording appears in the ESRB Ratings Guide.
That statement has two important implications. A descriptor can explain why a rating was assigned, but it can also be included because the material is relevant to consumers even when it was not the sole reason for the category. Conversely, the absence of a descriptor should not be treated as proof that a game contains no related moment. ESRB expressly says its descriptors are not a complete listing.

For a purchasing or parental decision, open the official record for the precise title. Check the edition, platform, release and market, then read the category, every listed descriptor and any rating summary or detailed advice. A listing for a different version of the same game may not describe the same content.
ESRB descriptors: similar words have different meanings
The following definitions are the ESRB’s own wording. They apply to ESRB labels, not automatically to PEGI or another authority.

These distinctions prevent several common misreadings. Nudity does not automatically mean sexual behavior, and a reference to sexuality is not the same as showing an act. Partial nudity is not a shortened name for sexual content. Likewise, “Violence” does not carry the same meaning as “Intense Violence,” and “Sexual Violence” identifies a different kind of material from either label.

How to interpret violence information
Start with the exact descriptor words rather than inferring severity from the age category. “Violence” signals aggressive conflict and can include bloodless dismemberment. “Intense Violence” adds graphic, realistic-looking physical conflict and may include extreme or realistic blood, gore, weapons, human injury and death. “Blood and Gore” tells you specifically to look for blood or mutilated body parts; it does not, by itself, describe the whole combat system or its realism.
Context still matters. A brief stylized attack, repeated realistic injury, and a scene depicting death can feel very different to a player even when the category is similar. Where an official rating summary supplies information about frequency, intensity, realism or circumstances, use that detail. If no such explanation is available, do not manufacture a scene-level conclusion from the label alone.
Sexual violence deserves separate attention. ESRB defines it as depictions of rape or other violent sexual acts. Because this label identifies both sexual and violent material, a reader who is screening for either sensitivity should treat it as a direct reason to seek the full official summary before playing.

How nudity and sexual material are separated
Read the labels as a progression of content types, not as interchangeable warnings. “Nudity” and “Partial Nudity” address what is shown about the body and how graphic or prolonged it is. “Sexual Themes” concerns references to sex or sexuality. “Suggestive Themes” covers mild provocative references or materials. “Sexual Content” identifies non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, possibly with partial nudity. “Strong Sexual Content” covers explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior and may include nudity.

The wording also does not tell you every circumstance: a rating record may not enumerate each scene, character, line of dialogue or optional sequence. Use the official title-specific summary when you need to know whether content is implied, brief, optional, repeated or central to play.
Why the delivery method can affect ESRB’s process
ESRB says that physical games go through its traditional rating process, while digital games use a process developed by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC). The distinction is explained on ESRB’s ratings-process page, and ESRB describes IARC’s role for digital games and apps on its Video Game Ratings page.

For the process ESRB describes, the questionnaire addresses relevant content such as violence, sex and language. It also considers context, reward systems and the degree of player control. Those factors explain why two games with superficially similar subject matter can receive different descriptors or categories: what happens, how it is presented, what the player is rewarded for doing and how directly the player controls it all provide context.
This is a description of ESRB’s process only. It should not be assumed to describe PEGI or every other rating authority, and it does not turn a descriptor list into a comprehensive script of the game.

PEGI is a separate European system. Its database entries pair an age-category label with descriptors and consumer advice, but the examples available here should be read as title-specific explanations rather than a complete, system-wide taxonomy.

For example, one official entry discusses implied sexual activity without visually showing it: PEGI database entry A. Another entry provides detail about sexual violence and partial nudity: PEGI database entry B. A third describes violence in more detail: PEGI database entry C.
Those entries demonstrate why the explanatory text matters: it can clarify whether sexual activity is implied, whether partial nudity or sexual violence is present, and how violence is characterized. They do not establish universal PEGI thresholds for every descriptor. Do not translate an ESRB definition into a PEGI rule or assume that a PEGI age number corresponds to an ESRB category.

- Identify the market. Use ESRB information for a North American release and PEGI information for a European release. If you are elsewhere, use the rating authority displayed for your territory.
- Find the exact title record. Match the game name, edition, platform and release. Avoid relying on a search result for a similarly named game, a remake or an earlier version.
- Record the age category and every descriptor. Copy the labels as written. Do not reduce them to a single number or letter.
- Read the explanatory text. Look for statements about frequency, intensity, realism, nudity, implied activity, sexual violence, blood, gore, weapons, injury, death and context.
- Check interactive elements. ESRB’s process can consider reward systems and player control, and an official record may note other interactive features beyond sexual or violent material.
- Decide against your own sensitivity criteria. A player may be comfortable with fantasy combat but not realistic injury, or with references to sexuality but not sexual violence. The rating supplies information; it does not make that personal decision.
- Recheck after a major release change. A remaster, regional edition, downloadable content package or platform release can have its own record. Use the listing attached to the version you will actually play.
Comparing two games without overreading the labels
When two games are under consideration, compare the records in the same order. This keeps an age category from hiding a meaningful descriptor difference.

For a defensible comparison, quote the descriptor terms and the relevant explanatory sentence from each official listing. Saying that one game has a “higher rating” is not enough to establish that it contains more nudity, more sexual content or more violence.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating a category as a scene list. A category signals suggested age appropriateness; it does not enumerate every event.
- Assuming descriptors are exhaustive. ESRB explicitly cautions that its descriptors are not a complete listing.
- Collapsing different sexual labels. References, mild provocative material, non-explicit behavior, explicit or frequent behavior, nudity and sexual violence are separate ESRB concepts.
- Equating all violence warnings. General aggressive conflict, graphic realistic conflict, blood or mutilation and sexual violence identify different issues.
- Crosswalking ESRB and PEGI mechanically. A number or descriptor in one system is not a conversion key for the other.
- Using another game’s entry as a proxy. PEGI’s explanatory statements are specific to the title in that entry, and the same caution applies when consulting ESRB records.
- Ignoring context and control. How content is presented, rewarded and controlled can change its significance to a player.
Bottom line for parents and players
Use the age category as the first filter, then make the decision from the exact descriptor set and title-specific explanation. On ESRB records, distinguish nudity from sexual behavior and references, and distinguish ordinary violence from intense violence, blood and gore, and sexual violence. On PEGI records, read the consumer-advice text for the particular game rather than importing ESRB definitions. Because neither a category nor a descriptor list promises a complete inventory of scenes, the safest approach is to verify the precise edition and region and apply the information to the player’s own boundaries.
