A video link can point to a finished media file, or it can lead to a player that assembles a stream from a playlist and many smaller pieces. That difference explains why some videos download with one request while others need stream-aware software, the original session context, or a step to combine separate audio and video. Use a service’s own download or offline-viewing feature when available, and save media only when you have permission.
What happens when you click a video link?
The browser follows the link and makes an HTTP request, but the response is not necessarily a video file. Depending on how the site serves the content, the link may point directly to a media resource, open a webpage containing a player, or lead the player to a streaming manifest. The player then requests the media needed for playback. Apple’s HLS deployment documentation describes using an M3U8 playlist as a video source; MDN’s adaptive-streaming guide explains how HLS and MPEG-DASH manifests identify media segments and playback information.
Direct media file
A direct-file link points to a media resource that can be requested as a file. If the browser or download tool supports the resource and the server permits the request, saving it may be as straightforward as downloading that response. The file may contain both audio and video, though a link alone does not guarantee a particular format or that the server will provide it as a conventional download.

Player and manifest
A webpage link may instead load a player, which obtains a manifest describing available media and how it is divided. In HLS, the playlist can serve as a source for video delivered over HTTP. The player requests media files in sequence, selecting appropriate pieces for playback; it is not necessarily downloading one preassembled file. Apple’s overview describes HLS as a method for delivering audio and video over HTTP: HTTP Live Streaming.

Why some playable videos do not download as one file
Playback and downloading a single finished file are different tasks. With adaptive streaming, the player can retrieve segments listed by a manifest and use them as a continuous presentation. The browser may be able to play that stream without exposing a single, stable file URL that a basic download command can save. The stream may also offer multiple quality or format choices, which the player handles during playback. MDN’s guide describes manifests and segments in adaptive streaming, while its HTML video element reference covers video playback in web pages.
A dedicated downloader can help when it recognizes the streaming protocol and can retrieve the component media. That does not mean every stream can or should be saved: access controls, service rules, and permissions still apply, and some protocols are not supported by browsers as direct downloads. The yt-dlp FAQ notes that browser support for download protocols varies.

Why a downloader may need the original session context
A media URL extracted from a page may not work when opened elsewhere. Depending on the service, requests can be tied to the same IP address, cookies, or HTTP headers used when the page was accessed. A downloader may therefore need the same request context as the browser session. This is service-dependent, not a universal requirement. The yt-dlp FAQ explains that video requests in many cases must come from the same IP address and use the same cookies and/or HTTP headers.
If a link fails outside the page where you found it, that failure does not by itself mean the video is gone. The URL may be temporary or dependent on session context; use the site’s own download option or an authorized method that preserves the required access context rather than trying to bypass restrictions.

Why the downloaded file may have no sound
Some services provide video-only and audio-only streams separately. A player can present them together during playback, but a downloader that saves only the video stream may produce a silent file. In that case, compatible audio and video streams need to be retrieved and combined. The yt-dlp documentation describes selecting formats and merging them with FFmpeg. Whether merging is needed depends on the formats the service provides.

How to choose an authorized way to save a video
- Look for the service’s download or offline-viewing feature. This is the clearest option when the site or creator provides one.
- Identify what the link opens. A direct media resource behaves differently from a webpage whose player loads a manifest and segments.
- Use a compatible method only where permitted. A browser may play a stream without being able to save it as one file; a stream-aware downloader may support more protocols, but it cannot make an unauthorized download appropriate.
- Check the result. If the saved file has no sound, the service may have supplied audio and video separately and may require a supported merge step.
Technical behavior does not establish what copyright law, a service’s terms, or circumvention rules allow in every country or for every site. Follow the creator’s permissions and the service’s stated download options.
