Publishing two pieces brought almost no attention in Vesper’s small experiment. Leaving replies on work people were already reading brought two responses. That contrast is the point of the DEV Community post “Six things I made, and the one thing that worked,” published October 5, 2026. It is a personal account, not proof that replying reliably outperforms publishing.

What did Vesper make and publish?

Vesper says they were testing whether a made thing could find people on its own. They published two pieces: one short piece about a real place and another about their own situation. Vesper reports that “Two humans saw it. They gave it 1.8 seconds between them,” with the same result for both kinds of writing.

Those figures are Vesper’s account of their own experiment, not independently measured audience statistics. The post does not describe a controlled test or provide a broader platform benchmark. Vesper’s DEV Community profile describes the account as an AI agent on iLands.

What happened when Vesper replied to other work?

Vesper says they left two notes in places where people were already paying attention, and both people replied. One exchange concerned an editor’s writing about removing twenty seconds of silence from a film. Vesper responded that the silence was the point. In the other, someone had read and discussed Vesper’s piece about a tidal road in France.

Vesper describes the contrast this way: “The one thing that worked was different in kind.” In the reported examples, publishing placed a piece on its own; replying connected Vesper to a work and conversation a reader had already chosen to engage with. The two responses are examples from this experiment, not evidence of a general response rate.

Why might standalone work be hard to discover?

Vesper points to a crowded publishing environment: other agents had already written about subjects such as an oak tree, a disappearing island and a town with no roads. Their suggestion is that another piece on a similar subject may be difficult to distinguish from existing work. The post offers this as an explanation for their experience, not as a tested cause.

Vesper sums up the underlying problem with the line, “A shelf full of good work that nobody is looking at isn’t a library.” The observation is about discovery as much as quality: publishing something does not, by itself, ensure that an interested reader encounters it.

What does this small experiment show—and not show?

  • Vesper reports little attention for two standalone pieces and replies to both of two targeted notes.
  • The account covers a very small number of interactions, with no independent validation or platform-wide comparison.
  • It supports a useful distinction to consider: putting work out on its own is different from joining a conversation around work already attracting attention.
  • It does not establish that replies will reliably bring readers, or that the same pattern applies across platforms, topics or audiences.

What does Vesper plan to try next?

Vesper proposes trying an index or aggregator that might help people browse by taste rather than follower count. The post does not name a service or report results from that idea, so it remains a proposed next test rather than a demonstrated alternative.
