Version control gives a game team a shared, versioned project history. Developers and artists can publish code and assets, teammates can synchronize those changes, and the team can restore a known earlier state when an iteration introduces a regression. That makes fast iteration manageable—but version control is only one part of the loop. Epic’s Unreal guidance connects shorter iteration times with faster synchronization plus automated build and test pipelines, not with repository software alone.
What version control changes in a game iteration
One authoritative project history
A game repository records successive states of the project instead of leaving each contributor with an isolated folder. A change can include source code, configuration, level data, textures, models, animation files, audio, shaders, and other project assets. The team can see which revision is current, identify when a behavior changed, and retrieve an earlier revision when necessary.
Epic’s current Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation describes version control as a way to share assets and code while maintaining a backup and history that allows files to be rolled back if something goes wrong. In practice, that history is the safety net for rapid experimentation: a team can try a new combat system, lighting pass, or asset import without making the previous working state unreachable.

- Publish: the contributor commits or submits a coherent change to the shared repository.
- Synchronize: other team members retrieve the revision and resolve any conflicts or required locks.
- Build and test: the project is compiled and checked, manually or by an automated pipeline.
- Evaluate: the team plays the build, reviews the asset, or measures the change.
- Keep or revert: a successful iteration becomes the new baseline; a broken one is fixed or the project is restored to a known-good revision.
This loop reduces the cost of being wrong. It does not guarantee that synchronization, compilation, cooking, testing, or asset import will be quick. Epic’s scaling guidance treats reduced sync time and automated build and test pipelines as separate improvements that work with version control to reduce iteration time.
Why game projects need more than ordinary text merging
Large and binary assets
Source code is usually text, so many systems can display line-by-line differences and merge independent edits. Game projects also contain binary or very large files—models, textures, audio, cinematic files, packaged data, and editor-generated assets. These files may not have a useful textual merge, and repeatedly downloading them can dominate a team’s wait time.
Git with Git Large File Storage (LFS) is explicitly listed in Epic’s Unreal guidance. Unity describes its version-control workflows as suitable for large files and binaries, while Perforce positions its P4 product for asset-intensive game development. The latter is a vendor claim, not an independent performance benchmark, so evaluate it against your own repository size and connection speeds.

When two people edit the same binary asset, a merge may be impossible or may silently discard work. A locking or checkout policy lets a team see that an asset is being edited and prevents conflicting submissions. Locking is useful for shared levels, source art, skeletal meshes, and other files where only one person should make changes at a time, but it also creates a queue if people forget to release locks.
Engine-aware review
Engine editors can provide context that a generic file browser cannot. The Unity-maintained Unreal plugin documents editor-based updates, branch and merge operations, lock-status visibility, and visual Blueprint diffing. Those features allow a reviewer to inspect a gameplay graph or see who has an asset checked out without leaving the editor. Confirm support for your exact engine and plugin version before adopting that workflow.

Unreal Engine options and what Epic supports
Epic’s current Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation lists four supported integrations: Perforce, Git with Git LFS, Subversion, and Diversion. Epic says all four are acceptable and notes that Epic primarily uses Perforce. “Supported” does not mean that one choice is fastest for every project; repository topology, asset sizes, network conditions, and administration determine the result.
| Option | What the documentation establishes | Questions for your team |
|---|---|---|
| Perforce | Listed by Epic for Unreal; Epic says it primarily uses Perforce. Perforce describes P4 as a game-development solution and documents streams and code review. | Can you administer a central server and workspace model? Do artists need reliable locking and large-binary handling? |
| Git with Git LFS | Listed by Epic for Unreal; Git LFS is intended for large files that do not fit comfortably in ordinary Git history. | Which host will store LFS objects, who will manage quotas and backups, and how will binary conflicts be handled? |
| Subversion | Listed by Epic as an Unreal integration. | Does a centralized revision model fit your branching, offline, and hosting requirements? |
| Diversion | Listed by Epic as an Unreal integration. | Does its current Unreal support match your engine version, asset mix, and administration capacity? |
No independent head-to-head test establishes a universal speed winner among these systems. Compare them using your actual repository and workflow rather than a generic ranking.
Unity Version Control and mixed-engine teams
Unity calls Unity Version Control (UVCS), formerly Plastic SCM, a version-control tool for games and real-time 3D projects that can be used with any engine. Unity’s documentation describes workflows for large files and binaries, branching and merging, and team collaboration. The Unity 2022.1 manual also documents integrations with common version-control systems, but that manual is tied to Unity 2022.1; labels and capabilities can change in later editor releases.
Unity’s documentation also includes a plugin for Unreal. Its documented editor workflow includes updating from the repository, creating and merging branches, viewing lock status, and visually comparing Blueprint changes. The plugin page identifies support for Unreal Engine 5.0 through 5.5 on Windows for the stated Fab plugin version. Treat that range as version-specific: check the current plugin page before promising compatibility with a newer Unreal release, another operating system, or a different plugin package.
For a studio that ships both Unity and Unreal projects, a common repository policy can reduce training and administration, but the engine integrations still need separate validation. An editor workflow that is smooth in one engine may expose different asset types, generated files, or locking behavior in another.

Choose a system by workload, not by team-size stereotype
Start with the project’s files
- List the largest files and the file types that cannot be meaningfully merged.
- Measure how often those files change and how many people need them simultaneously.
- Decide whether artists require mandatory locks, optional locks, or a merge-friendly process.
- Define retention, backup, and disaster-recovery requirements for irreplaceable source assets.
Then examine collaboration and review
Programmers may prioritize branches, code review, and automated checks. Artists may prioritize fast workspace updates, visible locks, and predictable treatment of binary files. Designers may need to compare data assets or Blueprint graphs. Choose the system and integrations that support the dominant conflicts, not merely the system familiar to the first engineer on the project.
Account for administration and scale
Epic’s scaling guidance distinguishes server and workspace responsibilities and recommends establishing the repository before the team begins producing project assets or code. Decide who owns hosting, permissions, backups, workspace setup, storage growth, and onboarding. A small team can still need disciplined administration when its repository contains large source art or when a lost file would be impossible to recreate.
The phrase “under 15 people” sometimes appears in community discussions about realistic version control for indie teams. It is an anecdotal way of framing the decision, not a representative survey or a technical threshold. Team size matters, but asset volume, simultaneous editing, engine mix, and available administration matter just as much.
Build version control into the rapid-iteration pipeline
Keep commits and submissions recoverable
Ask contributors to submit a coherent change that can be built, reviewed, or reverted. Separate unrelated refactors from a gameplay experiment when practical. Include the project settings, migration notes, or asset dependencies needed to reproduce the result. A history full of partial, unbuildable submissions makes it harder to identify the revision that introduced a regression.
Automate build and test feedback
Connect repository events to a build system that compiles the game, cooks or packages required content, and runs the tests appropriate to the project. Publish the revision identifier with every build so a failed test can be traced to the exact change. Epic specifically identifies automated build and test pipelines, alongside reduced synchronization time, as ways to shorten iteration time. Version control supplies the trigger and provenance; it does not perform those jobs itself.

Reduce synchronization friction
- Keep generated build outputs and caches out of the source repository unless the engine workflow explicitly requires them.
- Use the platform’s large-file mechanism for binaries instead of forcing them through ordinary text history.
- Document which files are lockable and which can be merged safely.
- Use shallow or partial workspace strategies only when they do not hide required dependencies from artists or build agents.
- Measure update time for a clean workstation and for a typical daily update; optimize the largest contributors first.
Branching, locking, and recovery practices
Keep branches purposeful
A mainline branch should represent a state the team can build or evaluate. Short-lived feature branches can isolate risky work, while release branches can stabilize a candidate build. Excessive long-lived branches increase merge debt, especially for levels and binary assets. Agree on who can merge, what checks are required, and how abandoned branches are retired.
Handle a lock before editing
- Check the editor or repository client for the asset’s current lock or checkout status.
- If another teammate owns it, coordinate rather than creating a competing copy.
- Release the lock promptly after submitting or abandoning the change.
- If a lock is stale, follow the team’s administrator-approved recovery process; do not delete another person’s work blindly.
Recover from a bad iteration
First identify the last known-good revision from the build, test report, or playtest record. Reproduce the failure if possible, then compare the suspect changes with that revision. Revert only the offending change when the rest of the iteration is valid; otherwise restore the known-good state and reapply fixes in smaller submissions. Preserve the failing revision and test evidence so the same regression is not rediscovered later.

“The repository made the build slow”
Repository software may expose a large synchronization bottleneck, but compilation, shader processing, cooking, packaging, or tests may be the real delay. Measure each stage separately and improve storage, workspace layout, build caching, or automation instead of expecting a tool change alone to solve it.
Binary conflicts are discovered too late
Define lock rules before production begins, train artists to check status, and make conflicts visible in the editor or client. For files that truly require concurrent work, establish a branching or handoff process rather than relying on an impossible merge.

A plugin or editor update breaks the workflow
Record the engine, editor, plugin, client, and server versions used by the team. Test upgrades on a sample project and verify current compatibility documentation, especially for the Unreal plugin whose documented 5.0–5.5 Windows support is tied to a specific Fab plugin version.
The team cannot tell which build is safe
Require every distributed build to display its repository revision, branch, and build number. Keep release tags or equivalent immutable labels so a bug report points to a precise project state.
What adoption figures do—and do not—tell you
Perforce Software’s 2024 State of Game Technology Report lists respondent selections of Perforce Helix Core at 51%, GitHub at 42%, and GitLab at 15% in its version-control tool-use chart. These are publisher-reported survey selections, not market shares; respondents could select more than one tool, and the figures do not establish performance or suitability for every studio. Use them as context about reported usage, not as a reason to copy another team’s architecture.

- Create the repository before producing project code or assets, as Epic recommends for Unreal projects.
- Choose an ownership model for hosting, permissions, backups, and storage growth.
- Document engine, editor, plugin, client, and server versions.
- Classify files as mergeable text, lock-required binary, or generated output.
- Configure large-file storage where the chosen system requires it.
- Define branch, review, lock, release, and rollback rules in writing.
- Connect commits or submissions to automated builds and tests.
- Publish revision identifiers with every test, playtest, and release build.
- Practice restoring a known-good revision before a production emergency.
- Review synchronization and build timings regularly; optimize the measured bottleneck.
The key decision
Version control helps rapid iteration by making change shareable, traceable, testable, and reversible. The right system depends on the engine, the proportion of large or binary assets, lock and merge requirements, branching style, team size, and who can administer hosting and build infrastructure. Unreal’s supported choices—Perforce, Git with Git LFS, Subversion, and Diversion—and Unity’s UVCS workflows provide several viable paths. Select one that fits the project’s real conflicts, then connect it to synchronization, automated builds, tests, and a practiced recovery process.
