vd is a terminal-based password manager and one-time password (OTP) authenticator for Linux and macOS. It combines an interactive text interface with command-line operations. Its credentials are encrypted with GPG and stored locally, so the key that encrypted your vault—and your own backup plan—matter as much as the interface.
What vd does
The project describes vd as a TUI (text user interface) password manager and OTP authenticator for Unix systems, specifically Linux and macOS. You can manage credentials interactively in a terminal or use command-line operations, including for scripting. The project documents binary downloads for Linux and macOS, as well as a source-build route using Go. See the vd project documentation for its current instructions and availability.
Documented operations include adding, viewing, deleting, and changing passwords; listing entries; copying passwords and OTP codes; adding OTP secrets; generating random passwords; exporting to CSV; and importing OTP secrets from a Google Authenticator export QR image. These are documented capabilities, not a claim that every workflow has been independently tested.

How GPG encryption affects your vault
vd uses GPG to encrypt and decrypt credentials stored on disk rather than describing a custom encryption algorithm. At registration, it can create a GPG key or use an existing one. The configured key identity is recorded in ~/.local/share/vd/gpg_email.txt.

The key is essential for recovery: credentials encrypted with one key can only be decrypted with that same key. Changing the configured email does not re-encrypt existing data. Preserve access to the key that encrypted your vault, and test that you can decrypt a backup before depending on it. Do not assume that changing a setting or creating a new key will make older entries accessible.
Where vd stores data—and what backup means
The README places encrypted password files in ~/.local/share/vd/passwords/. It says backups are not provided by default. Local encryption protects stored files in the documented design; it is not a backup, sync, or recovery service.

If you choose to back up the vault, include a recovery plan for the GPG key that can decrypt it. A copy of encrypted files without that key may not be useful. The project documentation does not establish automatic cloud synchronization, multi-device recovery, or a built-in backup feature.

A TOTP authenticator generates a changing code for sign-in. GitHub explains: “A time-based one-time password (TOTP) application automatically generates an authentication code that changes after a certain period of time.” GitHub’s two-factor authentication setup guidance describes configuring an authenticator from a QR code or setup key and recommends authenticator apps or security keys as alternatives to SMS.

vd documents adding OTP secrets, copying OTP codes, and importing secrets from a Google Authenticator export QR image. That import feature should not be confused with a general account-recovery feature: the documentation reviewed does not establish that vd creates or stores a service’s recovery codes. Save recovery codes separately in a secure location, as GitHub advises.
Is a terminal password manager a good fit?
vd may suit someone who prefers terminal workflows and wants password and OTP handling alongside command-line operations. Its documented GPG dependence and local file storage also mean you need to be comfortable managing the decryption key and arranging backups yourself. The available project documentation does not establish sync behavior or provide an independent security audit, so do not assume either from the fact that the vault is encrypted.
