A vapor chamber is a sealed, flat heat-spreading device that moves heat by boiling and condensing a small amount of internal fluid. Heat from a chip enters an evaporator area, vapor carries that energy through the chamber, and condensation releases it over a larger, cooler area. A wick then returns the liquid to the hot region by capillary action. The result is lateral heat spreading, not heat removal by itself: a heat sink, airflow path, liquid loop or other system still has to reject the energy to the surroundings.

What a vapor chamber is

A vapor chamber is a passive, sealed, two-phase thermal transport device. It is often described as a flat heat pipe because the operating principle is similar, but its broad, thin shape is optimized to spread heat across a plane. Instead of forcing heat through a narrow metal path, the chamber distributes energy from a concentrated source over a larger surface that can be coupled to a heat sink or another cooling structure.

The enclosure contains a working fluid, a vapor space and a porous wick. The chamber is evacuated and sealed during manufacture, so the fluid can change phase at the intended operating temperatures. There is no pump, motor or external power connection. Pressure differences created by evaporation and condensation drive vapor movement, while capillary forces in the wick provide the liquid-return path.

That distinction matters when evaluating a design. A chamber improves the thermal path between a hotspot and the rest of the cooling assembly; it does not make heat disappear or guarantee a lower device temperature without an adequate heat-rejection system and low-resistance interfaces.

How the heat-transfer cycle works

The cycle is continuous while the source is hot and a cooler condenser region is available.

  1. Heat enters the evaporator. A chip, package, power component or other source conducts heat through its contact material into the chamber’s evaporator region.
  2. Liquid evaporates in the wick. Working fluid held in the wick absorbs heat and changes from liquid to vapor. The phase change takes in latent heat without requiring the entire chamber to reach the vapor’s temperature.
  3. Vapor spreads through the chamber. The vapor moves through the internal vapor space from the high-temperature evaporator toward cooler portions of the chamber. Because the vapor space extends across the plate, energy can spread laterally rather than remaining concentrated under the source.
  4. Vapor condenses at cooler surfaces. At the condenser region, vapor releases latent heat as it returns to liquid. That heat passes through the chamber wall and into a heat sink, fin stack, cold plate or other thermal structure.
  5. The wick returns liquid. Capillary pressure draws the condensate through the wick back toward the evaporator. The liquid is available for another evaporation cycle, so the process repeats without a mechanical pump.

In plain language, the chamber moves heat by boiling and condensing a small amount of sealed-in fluid while a wick brings the liquid back to the hot spot.

What is inside a vapor chamber?

Construction varies with the required thickness, heat load, orientation and manufacturing process. A representative design described by Electronics Cooling uses two copper plates, a wick formed from copper mesh and powder, and water as the working fluid. The chamber is evacuated before sealing. Other material/fluid combinations named in the technical literature include titanium with water and aluminum with acetone; these are examples, not a universal recipe.

Internal or external element Role in cooling
Top and bottom plates Contain the vacuum and fluid, conduct heat into and out of the chamber, and provide mounting surfaces.
Working fluid Evaporates at the hot region and condenses at cooler regions, carrying latent heat.
Wick Holds liquid and generates capillary pressure that returns condensate to the evaporator.
Vapor space Allows vapor to travel across the chamber from hot to cool areas with relatively little flow resistance when properly designed.
Pillars or internal supports Can maintain plate spacing and structural integrity; their arrangement depends on the chamber design.
Sealing structure Keeps the working fluid contained and preserves the internal vacuum over the product’s service life.

Boyd’s two-phase thermal guide illustrates a similar set of elements—sealing substrate, back-plane, wick, pillars, liquid and vapor—while noting that exact geometry changes between products. A thin chamber may use a different wick pattern or support layout from a thicker, higher-capacity unit.

Why spreading heat helps an electronics cooler

A small semiconductor die can place a high heat flux under only a fraction of the area available to a heat sink. If a solid base conducts that heat poorly or must be made very thick to spread it, the fins above the hotspot are underused while the rest of the sink remains relatively cool. A vapor chamber redistributes energy across its plane so more of the downstream sink can participate.

The chamber is commonly installed directly beneath a source and integrated with a fin stack. Heat enters at one or more evaporator zones, travels through the chamber, and leaves through a broad condenser area. This arrangement is especially useful when the product is thin, when several sources must share one sink, or when the source and the best available sink area do not line up.

Spreading performance is controlled by the complete assembly. Source-to-chamber contact, chamber-to-sink contact, the sink’s own conduction, convection or liquid cooling, and the final path to ambient all contribute to temperature. A chamber with excellent internal transport can still perform poorly if a thick or uneven interface layer blocks heat flow, if the condenser area is too small, or if airflow cannot carry heat away.

What limits vapor-chamber performance?

Capillary pumping and dry-out

The wick must return enough liquid to the evaporator to replace what is boiling away. At higher loads, the required flow increases and pressure losses rise. If the wick cannot supply the evaporator, part of the hot region can dry out; heat transfer then degrades sharply and local temperature rises. Wick pore size, permeability, thickness and pattern are selected together with the working fluid and expected load.

Vapor and liquid transport limits

Vapor flow can become restricted at high rates, while counter-flowing liquid and vapor can interfere with one another. These transport limits depend on chamber dimensions, fluid properties, wick structure and operating temperature. A capacity number quoted for one tested assembly should not be treated as a universal rating for every shape or orientation.

Orientation and gravity

Capillary action is what allows a chamber to operate against gravity, but the available margin is finite. Orientation can help or oppose liquid return depending on the wick and the location of the evaporator and condenser. A design that works horizontally may have less headroom with the heat source above the condenser, so orientation must be included in qualification testing.

Anisotropic behavior

A vapor chamber is not a solid plate with one fixed thermal conductivity. Its effective conductance is usually much greater in the designed spreading plane than through its thickness, and it changes with heat load, temperature, geometry and proximity to transport limits. Simulation models therefore often represent it as an anisotropic heat spreader rather than assigning a single isotropic conductivity.

Interface and packaging resistance

Every interface adds resistance: source to chamber, chamber to sink and, where applicable, sink to a cold plate or airflow path. Flatness, contact pressure, thermal-interface material thickness and mounting structure can matter as much as the chamber itself. A mechanically constrained package may also limit the chamber’s available area or require openings and supports that interrupt spreading.

Vapor chamber, heat pipe or solid spreader?

These technologies solve related but different geometry problems. Select according to the source footprint, distance to the heat-rejection area, thickness budget and operating orientation.

Characteristic Vapor chamber Heat pipe Solid copper or aluminum spreader
Primary geometry Broad, thin planar spreader for distributing heat over an area. Longer, usually tubular path for transporting heat between separated locations. Continuous solid conduction path; spreading depends on material conductivity and thickness.
Best fit Localized or multiple hotspots that must feed a broad sink in a compact package. Heat sources and sinks separated by a meaningful distance or connected along a routed path. Simple, low-cost interfaces where the required area and thickness provide enough conduction.
Heat-transfer mechanism Evaporation, vapor transport, condensation and capillary liquid return. The same two-phase cycle in a narrower, elongated envelope. Conduction through a solid; no phase change or internal fluid circulation.
Orientation sensitivity Depends on wick design and liquid-return margin; gravity can help or oppose the cycle. Depends strongly on wick and orientation, especially for long runs. Not affected by liquid return because there is no fluid.
Packaging trade-off Very thin designs are possible, but internal supports, seals and interfaces consume space. Requires routing space and bend-radius allowance. Simple to integrate, but achieving broad spreading may require more thickness or mass.
Capacity basis Application-specific transport limits and tested assembly; no universal capacity. Application-specific transport limits and tested assembly. Set by material, dimensions, temperature gradient and interface conditions.

The practical question is not whether one technology is always “better.” It is whether the chosen device can move the required heat across the required geometry while maintaining acceptable source and sink temperatures.

How to size and integrate a chamber

  1. Define the source. Record steady and peak power, hotspot dimensions, allowable source temperature and whether there are multiple sources. Use the actual package footprint rather than the size of the circuit board around it.
  2. Map the heat-rejection area. Identify where fins, a cold plate or another sink can accept heat. Check the chamber’s available evaporator and condenser areas, thickness envelope, mounting holes and keep-out zones.
  3. Choose the spreading geometry. A planar chamber is valuable when the source is much smaller than the available sink area or when a solid base would need excessive bulk. A heat pipe may be more suitable when the main challenge is distance rather than area.
  4. Check orientation. Evaluate the installed orientations, including worst-case tilt and any transient movement. Confirm that the wick can return liquid against the expected gravitational head.
  5. Control interfaces. Specify flatness, clamping force and thermal-interface material. Keep the layer between source and evaporator thin and uniform, and do the same at the condenser-to-sink joint.
  6. Allow design margin. A June 2021 Electronics Cooling implementation discussion gives two rules of thumb: a heat-sink-to-source area ratio of 20:1 and 25% thermal headroom. Those figures are that discussion’s guidance, not universal specifications; validate them against the actual chamber, sink and operating conditions.
  7. Test the assembled system. Measure source temperature, sink temperature, ambient conditions, orientation and power at steady state and during transients. Test the complete interface stack, because chamber-only data cannot reveal contact resistance or inadequate airflow.

Common integration problems and fixes

Observed symptom Likely cause Checks and corrective action
Hotspot remains concentrated directly over the source Insufficient condenser area, poor contact, or chamber operating beyond its spreading capability. Inspect contact imprint and interface thickness, verify sink coverage, and compare the load with the chamber’s tested design point.
Temperature rises sharply after a power increase Capillary limit or evaporator dry-out. Reduce load to confirm the transition, test orientation, and select a wick/chamber design with more liquid-return margin.
Good results in one orientation but not another Gravity is reducing liquid-return headroom. Characterize the installed tilt range and use a wick designed for the worst orientation.
Chamber is cool but the device is still too hot Resistance at the source interface or inadequate heat rejection downstream. Measure temperatures on both sides of each interface, improve clamping or interface material, and verify airflow or coolant capacity.
Performance varies between assemblies Uneven mounting pressure, surface flatness variation or inconsistent interface material. Control torque sequence, inspect flatness and standardize the interface application process.
Mechanical interference or panel bulging Chamber thickness, supports or seals conflict with the enclosure. Check the complete mechanical stack-up, keep-out zones and required compression before finalizing the chamber outline.

When a vapor chamber is the right choice

  • Use one when a compact or low-profile product has a localized high-power source and a larger heat sink that is not being used uniformly.
  • Use one when several nearby sources need to share one fin stack or cold plate, provided the chamber has enough evaporator and condenser area.
  • Consider a solid spreader first when loads are modest, the path is short and the required area can be achieved without excessive thickness or mass.
  • Consider a heat pipe when the dominant requirement is to move heat over a longer routed distance rather than spread it broadly beneath one sink.
  • Do not treat a chamber as a complete cooler. It must be paired with a system that rejects heat to air, liquid or another environment.

The most reliable selection combines measured source power, hotspot size, available chamber and sink area, orientation, thickness, interface resistance and the tested transport margin of the specific design. Supplier comparisons can be useful, but performance claims need the conditions and assembly details attached to them.

What the technical references establish

The May 30, 2023 Electronics Cooling guide by Purdue authors explains vapor chambers as passive phase-change devices, discusses capillary liquid return and recommends anisotropic treatment in simulation. An October 2024 Electronics Cooling article describes representative plates, wick, fluid and vacuum construction and the evaporation/condensation cycle. Electronics Cooling’s April 30, 2010 integration article covers direct source contact, spreading and heat-sink integration. Its June 2021 implementation discussion addresses wick tuning, orientation, capillary limits and the application-specific 20:1 area and 25% headroom guidance. Boyd Corporation’s March 2021 two-phase thermal guide illustrates common internal elements and the same basic cycle. These references support the operating principles and design considerations above; they do not create one universal performance rating for all vapor chambers.
