In Vampire Survivors, a normal weapon evolution usually requires three things: the base weapon at its required maximum level, its matching passive item at the level specified by that recipe, and an eligible treasure chest opened after the run reaches the applicable time threshold. A union is different: it combines two or more weapons into one result, sometimes with an additional passive requirement. The familiar examples are Whip plus Hollow Heart for Bloody Tear, Magic Wand plus Empty Tome for Holy Wand, Peachone plus Ebony Wings for Vandalier, and Phiera Der Tuphello plus Eight The Sparrow plus Tirajisú for Phieraggi.
The difference between an evolution and a union
Both systems improve your build through a treasure chest, but they do not use the same recipe structure. An evolution replaces one base weapon with a stronger evolved form. A union merges multiple weapons into a single weapon. That distinction matters when you are planning weapon slots, passive slots and level-up choices.

The usual pattern is therefore not simply “level any weapon and open any chest.” The weapon identity, passive identity, level requirements, chest eligibility and any special rule all have to line up.

Use this sequence when you are pursuing an ordinary one-weapon evolution. Because individual recipes can set different passive requirements, verify the particular recipe rather than assuming every passive needs the same number of levels.

- Choose the target weapon. Identify the exact base weapon you want to evolve. Similar-looking weapons are not interchangeable: the recipe checks the named item.
- Find the matching passive. Each standard evolution is tied to a particular passive item. Pick up that passive before the relevant chest is opened.
- Meet the weapon level requirement. Level the base weapon to the maximum level required by its recipe. If it is still one level short, the chest may behave like an ordinary reward instead of producing the evolution.
- Meet the passive level requirement. Some recipes use a passive at a required level, while the exact requirement varies. Check the recipe entry in the game’s Collection or another current reference for the item you are using.
- Reach the chest timing requirement. The cited chest rule allows an evolution or union once the run is at least 10 minutes and the other requirements are met. Earlier chests should not be treated as guaranteed evolution chests.
- Open an eligible treasure chest. Defeat the enemy or boss that drops the chest, then collect it. Eligibility depends on the chest and the run’s conditions, so do not assume every chest produces an upgrade.
- Confirm the result. The evolved weapon should replace the base weapon in your build. If the expected item does not appear, use the troubleshooting checks below before abandoning the run.
Why maximum level matters
The level-up screen and the chest serve different purposes. Normal level-ups raise a weapon or passive one step at a time. The evolution check happens when an eligible chest is opened, and the base weapon generally has to be at its maximum level first. Picking up the correct passive is not enough if the weapon itself is still incomplete.
Why passive levels cannot be assumed
A common shortcut says that one level of the passive is always sufficient. That is unsafe. The specific recipe determines the required passive level, and different weapons can use different conditions. Treat the passive’s required level as a recipe field to verify, not as a universal rule.
Chest timing: what the 10-minute rule does and does not mean
The cited treasure-chest reference describes a general threshold of at least 10 minutes into the run for an eligible chest to grant an evolution or union when its requirements are satisfied. This is a timing condition, not a promise that the next chest will always contain the upgrade.

- After the threshold, the weapon, passive and recipe conditions still have to be complete.
- The chest must be one that can grant an evolution or union under that run’s rules.
- Special cases can change normal chest behavior, including situations in which more than one weapon can be upgraded from a chest.
For practical planning, avoid opening a potentially important chest immediately if you know the run has not reached the timing requirement. Once the clock has passed the threshold, open an eligible chest only after checking that all required items are ready. Never interpret a non-evolution chest as proof that the recipe is impossible; chest eligibility and special conditions may be the issue.

How unions work
A union consumes multiple weapons as components and produces one combined weapon. Because several weapon slots can become one result, a successful union can free a slot for another weapon, but the exact recipe still controls what is required.
Vandalier
Vandalier is the clearest example of a union. It combines Peachone and Ebony Wings. You must have both named weapons in the run and bring them to the levels required for the union before opening an eligible chest. The result is one combined weapon rather than two separate bird weapons.
Phieraggi
Phieraggi combines Phiera Der Tuphello and Eight The Sparrow. The cited weapon reference also lists Tirajisú as required. This illustrates why unions need their own checklist: having both weapon components is not, by itself, the complete recipe when an additional passive is part of the condition.

Unions may have different passive rules
Some unions do not require a passive item, while others do. Tirajisú’s inclusion in the Phieraggi recipe shows that a union can include a passive requirement even though the defining action is the merger of weapons. Check every component and every listed passive rather than applying the standard evolution formula automatically.

Worked standard-evolution examples
Whip plus Hollow Heart produces Bloody Tear
To pursue Bloody Tear, select Whip, acquire Hollow Heart, and raise Whip to the required maximum level. Raise Hollow Heart to the level specified by the current recipe, then wait for an eligible chest after the run reaches the applicable time condition. The chest is the trigger that converts the completed setup into Bloody Tear.
Magic Wand plus Empty Tome produces Holy Wand
For Holy Wand, the component pair is Magic Wand and Empty Tome. Level Magic Wand fully, satisfy Empty Tome’s recipe-specific level requirement, and open an eligible chest after the timing condition is met. A chest opened with an under-leveled component cannot be assumed to produce Holy Wand.
Worked union examples
Peachone plus Ebony Wings produces Vandalier
- Acquire Peachone.
- Acquire Ebony Wings.
- Level both weapons to the levels required by the union.
- Reach the chest timing threshold and locate an eligible chest.
- Open the chest with both components ready.
The important planning difference is that two weapon slots must be developed before the union can happen. Taking only one bird and hoping a passive will substitute for the other does not satisfy this recipe.
Phiera Der Tuphello plus Eight The Sparrow produces Phieraggi
- Acquire Phiera Der Tuphello and Eight The Sparrow.
- Acquire Tirajisú, which the cited reference lists as an additional requirement.
- Raise both weapon components to the required levels and meet any stated Tirajisú level condition.
- Use an eligible chest after the run reaches the applicable time threshold.
This recipe demonstrates that a union can have a passive condition even though two weapons are being merged. Keep the passive in the build until the union has been awarded.

How to plan a run around an evolution or union
Reserve the needed slots early
Decide whether your target needs one weapon or several before filling every weapon slot. A standard evolution needs one base weapon; a union such as Vandalier needs two. If you take unrelated weapons first, you may delay one of the required components or run out of room for the recipe.
Use level-ups deliberately
The official game listing’s starting tips advise leveling weapons one at a time. That approach is useful for an evolution target because it gets one base weapon to its required maximum sooner. For a union, the same principle can be applied sequentially: finish one component, then concentrate on the other, while keeping the required passive in the build.
Do not discard a required passive too soon
A passive can look less attractive than a damage or survival item, but removing it before the chest is opened breaks the recipe. Keep the required passive until the upgrade has appeared. This is especially important for unions with an extra passive requirement, such as Phieraggi.

Mark the 10-minute threshold mentally, but also identify whether the chest you are approaching is eligible under the stage’s rules. The threshold and the chest type work together; time alone does not guarantee a result.

Troubleshooting when the upgrade does not appear
The chest opens but gives an ordinary item
- Check that the run had reached at least 10 minutes.
- Confirm that the chest was eligible to grant evolutions or unions.
- Verify that the base weapon was at its required maximum level.
- Verify the matching passive and its recipe-specific level.
- For a union, confirm every weapon component and any additional passive.
- Check whether the recipe has a weapon-specific exception.
One component is missing from a union
A union cannot be completed from a single component. For Vandalier, both Peachone and Ebony Wings are required. For Phieraggi, both named projectile weapons and Tirajisú are listed. If one item was never acquired, the chest cannot manufacture it from the other component.
The passive is present but the result still fails
Presence alone may not satisfy the recipe. Recheck its required level, because passive requirements are not universal. Also confirm that the weapon itself is fully leveled; a maxed passive cannot compensate for an under-leveled base weapon.
A chest appears to upgrade more than one weapon
Do not assume this is a bug. The chest reference describes exceptions in which more than one weapon can be upgraded from a chest. Treat multi-upgrade behavior as a special case rather than the normal expectation, and verify the stage or recipe conditions if the outcome differs from a standard single evolution.

Recipe coverage and version caution
The examples above are supported recipes, not a complete chart of every weapon in the base game and downloadable content. Weapon lists and special conditions can change with updates or differ by content set. For a recipe not listed here, use the in-game Collection entry or a current weapon reference and confirm all of the following before committing a run:
- Whether the target is an evolution or a union.
- The exact weapon names and number of components.
- The maximum level required for each component.
- The passive item, if any, and its required level.
- The chest timing and eligibility rule.
- Any exception that allows multiple upgrades or changes the normal chest behavior.
That verification step is more reliable than copying a universal “one passive level plus a 10-minute chest” formula, because the general rule has recipe-specific exceptions and the cited references do not establish a complete, permanently current DLC database.
A compact pre-chest checklist
- Target identified: evolution or union?
- Components complete: every named weapon acquired?
- Weapon levels complete: each component at its required maximum?
- Passive ready: matching passive acquired at the required level?
- Clock ready: run has reached the applicable 10-minute threshold?
- Chest eligible: this chest can grant the desired upgrade?
- Exceptions checked: any special weapon or multi-upgrade condition accounted for?
When all seven checks pass, open the eligible chest. If the reward still differs, revisit the recipe-specific condition rather than repeatedly opening unrelated chests.
