In the 2026 VCT season, each of the four territories sends four teams to Champions Shanghai: two from the territory’s Stage 2 playoffs and two through Championship Points. That creates a 16-team field. Champions then uses four GSL groups, followed by an eight-team double-elimination playoff. A team is eliminated after its second loss within either stage’s applicable format: two group-stage losses end its tournament, while a first playoff loss moves it to the lower bracket and a second playoff loss ends its run.
The qualification routes and tournament rules are separate. A team does not need to win the Stage 2 playoff to qualify if it finishes among its territory’s top Championship Point earners, and a group-stage loss does not automatically put it into the playoff lower bracket.

Riot’s event guide lists Champions Shanghai for September 24 through October 18, 2026. Dates, qualified teams and live standings can change as the season develops, so a schedule or table viewed before the event should be treated as time-sensitive.
How the 16 Champions teams qualify
The 2026 VALORANT Champions field is built territory by territory rather than through one global qualifying bracket. The four VCT territories are Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China. Each supplies exactly four teams, making 16 entrants overall.

Riot’s VALORANT Esports 2026 League Handbook describes the rule this way: the top two teams from each territory’s Stage 2 Playoffs, together with the top two Championship Point earners from each territory, participate in Champions Shanghai. Those are two different ways to earn a place.
Route one: finish in the top two of Stage 2 playoffs
Every territory holds a Stage 2 competition that culminates in playoffs. The two highest finishers in that territory’s Stage 2 playoff qualify directly for Champions. This route is based on playoff placement, not on a team’s worldwide ranking or on the result of another territory’s league.
A Stage 2 playoff run therefore has two possible values: it can produce a direct Champions place through the top-two finish, and its placement can also contribute Championship Points under the handbook’s points framework. The direct qualification place is the simpler of the two routes because it is decided by the playoff bracket itself.

The second route rewards results accumulated through the season. The handbook’s Stage 2 overview states that a team receives one Championship Point for each regular-season match win, plus additional points according to playoff placement. At the end of the qualification process, the two highest Championship Point earners in each territory receive the other two Champions places.
This system means a team can remain in contention without taking the Stage 2 title. Consistent wins during the regular season and a strong playoff finish can place a team high enough in its territory’s points table to qualify through the Championship Point route.

Championship Points are territorial: a team is compared with other teams in its own VCT territory for these places. The four territories do not combine their points into one global leaderboard for the four slots each territory supplies.
What is not specified about overlapping qualification
The published handbook overview identifies the two qualification routes but does not explain, in the cited text, what happens if one team qualifies through both routes. It also does not set out a tie-break procedure for teams level on Championship Points. The safe reading is that the two routes exist as stated; the exact reallocation or tie-break mechanism should be taken from a later official ruling if Riot publishes one, rather than assumed.
That qualification caveat matters when reading a provisional standings table. Seeing the same team near the top of both the Stage 2 playoff route and the points route does not, by itself, establish which other team would inherit a place or how a tie would be resolved.
How Championship Points connect the season
Championship Points are designed to measure more than one elimination match. The Stage 2 rules cited in the handbook combine regular-season match wins with playoff placement points, so a team’s position reflects results across multiple parts of its territory’s competition.
Regular-season wins
Each regular-season match win in the Stage 2 overview is worth one Championship Point. The unit is a match win, not an individual map win. A best-of-three series that a team wins counts as the regular-season match win described by the handbook; the cited material does not assign a separate point for every map.

Playoff placement
Teams also receive additional points based on where they finish in the Stage 2 playoffs. The handbook specifically refers to placement points for the top four playoff finishers. A deep run can therefore improve a team’s Championship Point total even when it does not end in one of the two direct Stage 2 qualification places.
How to read a points table
- Check that the table is for the correct VCT territory.
- Separate regular-season match-win points from playoff-placement points if the organizer displays them separately.
- Remember that the two highest earners are the relevant threshold for the points route, not a single worldwide total.
- Look for an official update if teams are tied or if a team appears to have met both qualification routes.
The available handbook summary does not provide a complete tie-break or duplicate-qualification procedure. Do not infer one from a previous Champions season, because the rules are season-specific.
What happens at Champions Shanghai
Once all 16 places are filled, the event itself has two stages: a GSL group stage and an eight-team double-elimination playoff.
Stage one: four GSL groups
The 16 teams are split into four groups of four. GSL is not a single-loss knockout bracket. Teams play within their group, and the top two records advance to the playoff stage.
All group-stage matches are best-of-three. A team must win the series, not merely one map, to receive the match result that affects its group position. Because two teams advance from each group, Champions produces an eight-team playoff field: four groups multiplied by two survivors.

How losses work in the group stage
The event guide summarizes the group-stage threshold as two losses meaning elimination. In practical terms, a team can lose once and still qualify by recovering in its remaining group matches. A second group-stage loss ends its Champions tournament, while the two teams that finish at the top of the group move on.
Group-stage losses do not create a playoff lower-bracket position. The GSL groups finish first; only the eight teams that advance enter the subsequent playoff bracket.
Stage two: an eight-team double-elimination playoff
The eight group survivors enter a double-elimination playoff. Every team starts in the upper bracket. Losing a playoff match once does not eliminate the team: it drops into the lower bracket, where it has another route toward the final.
A second playoff loss eliminates the team. That second loss can occur in the lower bracket, because there is no further bracket below it. The structure gives a team one recovery opportunity after its first playoff defeat but does not give it an unlimited number of chances.

Best-of-three and best-of-five matches
Most playoff matches are best-of-three. The lower final and the grand final are exceptions and are best-of-five. A best-of-five requires a team to win three maps, whereas a best-of-three requires two; the match format is therefore part of the competitive difference between the earlier bracket rounds and the final stages.

How a team’s complete path can unfold
- Compete in its VCT territory. The team plays the territory’s regular season and Stage 2 competition in Americas, EMEA, Pacific or China.
- Accumulate results. Stage 2 regular-season match wins provide one Championship Point each under the handbook overview, and playoff placement can add more points.
- Earn a territory place. A top-two Stage 2 playoff finish qualifies directly, or a team can finish among the territory’s top two Championship Point earners.
- Enter the 16-team Champions field. Four teams come from each of the four territories.
- Play the GSL group stage. The team competes in a four-team group in best-of-three matches.
- Avoid a second group loss. Two losses eliminate the team; finishing in the group’s top two sends it to the playoff bracket.
- Start the playoff bracket. The eight group survivors enter double elimination, initially in the upper bracket.
- Respond to a playoff loss. One loss moves the team to the lower bracket. A second playoff loss eliminates it.
- Reach the final rounds. The lower final and grand final use best-of-five series, while most other playoff matches remain best-of-three.
The losses in steps five and seven belong to different stages. A team that lost once in its group does not begin the playoffs with one playoff loss; the double-elimination count starts when it enters the playoff bracket.
Dates and information that can change
Riot’s 2026 event guide lists Champions Shanghai from September 24 to October 18, 2026. Those dates identify the scheduled event window, not a guarantee that every match will begin at a particular local time or that the qualification picture is already final.
Qualification standings can change until the relevant territory’s matches and playoffs are complete. For current information, check the latest official VCT standings and event announcements alongside the handbook. A static explanation of the rules cannot replace a live bracket, especially where a tie-break or overlapping qualification scenario requires an official ruling.

Common misunderstandings about Champions qualification
“Every Champions team must win Stage 2 playoffs.”
Incorrect. Only the top two Stage 2 playoff finishers from each territory qualify through that direct route. Two additional teams per territory qualify through Championship Points.
“Champions is single elimination from the first match.”
Incorrect. The opening groups use a GSL format, and the event guide describes two losses as the group-stage elimination threshold. The playoff stage is separately double-elimination.
“One playoff loss knocks a team out.”
Incorrect. A first playoff loss sends the team to the lower bracket. The second playoff loss ends its tournament.
“A map win is the same as a Championship Point.”
The handbook’s Stage 2 overview awards one point for a regular-season match win and separate points for playoff placement. It does not describe one Championship Point for each map won.
“The 2026 rules apply to every Champions edition.”
They do not. The four-territory allocation, points description and Shanghai event structure described here are the 2026 rules. Future seasons may change the qualification routes, number of teams, match formats or elimination structure.
Quick Recap
A simple way to follow the qualification race
- Identify the team’s territory first; qualification places are allocated separately in Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China.
- Track Stage 2 playoff placement and Championship Points as separate routes.
- When Champions begins, record group results rather than treating the event as an immediate knockout.
- After the eight-team playoff starts, mark each team’s first loss as a lower-bracket move and its second as elimination.
- Verify unusual cases—ties or apparent double qualification—against an official Riot announcement because the cited handbook overview does not publish those procedures.
