V Rising multiplayer is organized around servers. You and your friends must join the same server world, then form a clan to share a castle-building and progression run. A private co-op session is quickest for a small group; a dedicated server is better when the world should remain available after one player leaves. Official and community servers can use different PvE, PvP, reset, loot and clan rules, and your vampire’s progression stays tied to the server where it was created.
The basic multiplayer model
Stunlock Studios describes V Rising as a game you can play solo or online, including the option to “Build, Hunt and Rise together in clans of up to four fellow Vampires.” In practice, the server is the foundation of every multiplayer session. It stores the world, applies its rules, and determines where your character’s castle, gear, abilities and other progression exist.

To play together, one player selects or creates a server, creates or loads a vampire there, and has the other players join that same world. Once everyone is present, the group can use the clan system to share a base and coordinate progression. Players can also remain outside a clan and interact in the same world, which is useful for looser alliances or competitive play.
Which type of server should you use?
V Rising offers several practical server arrangements. The important differences are who operates the server, whether a particular player’s game client must be running, how persistent the world is, and which rules apply.

There is no universal “best” choice. A temporary private session minimizes setup. A dedicated server solves the host-availability problem. An official server removes most administration from your group, while a private community server gives the administrator control over rules, resets and moderation.
How to start a private co-op game
A private session is the shortest path when everyone expects to play together. The exact menu wording can change between game versions and platforms, but the sequence is consistent:

- Create or load a vampire on that world. The host’s character and the world are associated with that server session.
- Have friends join the same session. Friends use the game’s join or invite flow and must select the host’s world rather than creating separate characters elsewhere.
- Form a clan. After joining, invite the other vampires to the clan so the group can coordinate a shared castle and progression run. The official product page advertises clans of up to four fellow vampires.
- Check the session rules before investing time. PvE/PvP behavior, loot, resets and other settings are determined by the world configuration. If the group wants a different ruleset, create or join the appropriate server before building a long-term base.
The trade-off is availability. A private co-op world is convenient when the host and friends play together, but it is not the right arrangement if members expect to log in at different times and find the world running without the host.
When a dedicated server is the better choice
A dedicated server is a separate V Rising Dedicated Server application rather than a world hosted inside one player’s normal game session. It is designed for a server process that can continue independently of the game client, making it suitable for groups with different schedules.
Self-hosting with the official dedicated-server application
- Open Steam’s Tools library. Stunlock’s dedicated-server guide directs players to obtain the V Rising Dedicated Server application from Steam’s Tools section.
- Install and launch the server application. The server process, not the regular game client, becomes the service that maintains the world.
- Give the server a custom name. Use a name your group can identify in its server list and invitations.
- Set the rules and access details. Configure the gameplay options your group wants, including the PvE or PvP style and any available progression, reset, loot or clan settings.
- Share the server with your players. Give friends the connection information and any password or access requirement configured for the server.
- Keep the process available. The world is reachable only while the dedicated-server process and the host machine or service are running. Plan restarts and updates so players know when the world will be unavailable.
Self-hosting avoids a recurring hosting bill, but the group is responsible for the computer, network reachability, updates, backups and moderation. A machine that is shut down or disconnected takes the world offline.
Using a rented private server
A rented service moves the operating work to a provider. Stunlock’s PS5 FAQ, published December 1, 2025, names PocketHost and GPortal as providers supporting private PS5 hosting. Stunlock’s hosting guidance describes management features such as server status, settings, logs, configuration files, restarts, updates and permissions for PocketHost.

Provider availability, pricing, regions, platform support and service terms can change. Confirm those details for your platform and location before paying. Renting is attractive when nobody in the group wants to leave a home computer running or troubleshoot network access, but it adds an ongoing service cost and makes the provider’s uptime and controls part of the experience.

Clans: the normal co-op team structure
Clans are V Rising’s built-in co-op unit. The official site advertises a maximum of four fellow vampires, so a four-player group can organize one shared run around a clan castle, resource gathering and boss progression.
That advertised limit is not necessarily the limit on every server. Server administrators can expose different clan settings, and a listing may advertise a modified limit. Treat the rules shown for the specific server as the final authority before planning a larger group.
Clan membership is separate from simply being present in the same world. On a PvP server, players can encounter one another, trade or fight without belonging to the same clan. On a community server, administrators may also impose additional teaming restrictions.
PvE, PvP and informal alliances
Server listings commonly distinguish PvE from PvP, but that label is only the starting point. Read the complete listing for reset schedules, difficulty, loot rates, clan limits and any special rules.
Stunlock’s official guidance says there are no rules against informal alliances between vampire clans, sometimes called “teaming,” on official servers. That means separate clans can coordinate even when they are not one clan. A private server may ban or restrict such cooperation through its own rule set, so groups that want tightly controlled PvP should choose a community whose written rules match their expectations.
Moderation also differs. Official servers are hosted and moderated by Stunlock Studios. Private and dedicated servers are administered by the owner or community, which means enforcement quality, reset decisions and responses to disputes depend on that administrator.
Character progression does not move between servers
Server choice is a long-term decision because V Rising characters are server-bound. Stunlock’s transfer guidance, updated July 3, 2025, states: “At this time, character transfers between servers are not supported in V Rising.” Your progression, gear, castle and unlocked abilities remain attached to the server where the character was created.

Joining a different server normally means creating a new vampire there. Your original character remains on the first server, but the new world does not inherit that character’s equipment, castle or abilities.
Do not plan a campaign around copying private save files between servers. Stunlock describes manual save copying on private infrastructure as unsupported and potentially unstable. Keep the group on the intended server from the beginning, and verify its rules and reset policy before investing in a permanent castle.
PS5, PC chat and hosting differences
Stunlock’s PS5 FAQ documents three text-chat channels: Global, Local and Clan. It also says proximity chat is not currently supported on PS5 at the time of that FAQ’s publication. Groups playing on PS5 should therefore plan communication around those text channels or an external voice service.

The available channels and voice features can therefore differ by platform and server arrangement; do not assume that a PS5 player has every chat option documented for PC.
The PS5 FAQ identifies PocketHost and GPortal as private-hosting providers supporting PS5. Their current plans, regions and terms are service details rather than permanent game rules, so check the provider and Stunlock’s latest platform guidance when setting up a new server.

The official material confirms V Rising availability on Steam and PS5, but it does not clearly state a current Steam-to-PS5 crossplay policy. Do not promise that a Steam player can join a PS5 player’s server, or the reverse, without a newer explicit statement from Stunlock.
For a mixed-platform group, verify crossplay in the current platform documentation or in the server’s own listing before buying a hosting plan or creating characters. If crossplay is not explicitly supported for the versions you own, plan separate platform-specific servers; character progression would remain separate as well.

How to choose a server before creating your vampire
- Match schedules: Choose a private session only if the host can be present whenever the group plays. Choose a dedicated or rented server when players need independent access times.
- Decide who should administer it: Official servers place moderation and rules with Stunlock; private servers place those decisions with the owner or community.
- Read the complete rules: Check PvE/PvP mode, clan limit, reset schedule, difficulty, loot settings and teaming policy rather than relying on the server name alone.
- Confirm platform support: Steam and PS5 availability are established, but Steam-to-PS5 crossplay is not clearly established by the cited official material.
- Plan for persistence: A dedicated process or rented service is appropriate when the world should remain available without one player’s game client.
- Accept server-bound progression: Once the group starts, moving to another server means starting a new vampire rather than transferring the existing one.
Common multiplayer problems and practical fixes
Friends cannot see the same world
Confirm that every player selected the same server and platform-compatible version. A character created on another server will not appear in the new world. For a private session, the host must start the world before friends can join. For a dedicated server, check that the server process is running and that the shared connection and access details are correct.
The world is unavailable when the host leaves
This is expected for a host-dependent private session. Move the world to a dedicated server or a rented private host if the group needs independent login times.
The clan cannot include everyone
Check the server’s advertised clan limit. The official site advertises up to four fellow vampires, but server settings can differ. A larger community may need multiple clans and should review the server’s teaming rules before coordinating.
Players disagree about PvP or teaming
Read the server’s written rules and moderation policy. Official servers allow informal alliances between clans, while private communities can prohibit or restrict teaming. If the rules do not match the group’s expectations, choose another server before building a long-term base.
A player expects to keep progress on another server
That expectation is unsupported. Official character transfers are not available, and manual save copying on private infrastructure can be unstable. Create the vampire on the server the group intends to use for the campaign.
Bottom line for a new group
Start a private co-op session when four or fewer friends want a quick, shared play session and can coordinate around the host. Use a self-hosted or rented dedicated server when the castle and world must remain available between play sessions. Before anyone creates a vampire, agree on the server’s PvE/PvP rules, clan limit, reset policy, platform support and moderation standards. That decision matters because V Rising keeps progression on the original server, with no officially supported character transfers.
