DisplayPort Alt Mode is a capability that lets a compatible USB-C port carry DisplayPort audio and video to a monitor. The USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output: the source device, cable, and any adapter or dock must all support the intended setup.
What is DisplayPort Alt Mode?
DisplayPort Alt Mode is a USB-C Alternate Mode: a compatible device configures selected signals in its USB-C connection to carry DisplayPort audio and video. It can connect a USB-C source to a USB-C monitor directly, or to a display with a DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, or VGA input through a suitable adapter. VESA first published the standard on September 22, 2014. VESA’s announcement of the standard describes the original specification.
Keep three things separate when checking compatibility: the USB-C connector, the device’s support for DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the DisplayPort generation and lane configuration. A port can have the USB-C shape without supporting video. VESA says its DisplayPort logo on a USB-C device indicates VESA-certified Alt Mode support; otherwise, check the device’s technical specifications. VESA’s compliance-test announcement explains the certification context.

USB-C Alternate Mode repurposes some or all of the connector’s four high-speed lanes for DisplayPort. Other signals in the connector support DisplayPort’s AUX channel and hot-plug detection. Using all four lanes gives the video link more bandwidth; assigning fewer lanes to video can leave high-speed lanes available for SuperSpeed USB data, but affects the bandwidth available to the display. The exact behavior depends on the devices and connection. VESA’s Alt Mode 2.0 announcement describes the lane and bandwidth options.

In its April 29, 2020 announcement of DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, VESA said the mode can carry up to 80 Gbps of DisplayPort video using all four high-speed lanes, or up to 40 Gbps while delivering SuperSpeed USB data simultaneously. These are standard-level figures for that announcement, not the guaranteed speed of every USB-C port, cable, or dock.
What determines whether a USB-C setup will work?
- Source device: The laptop, tablet, or other host must support DisplayPort Alt Mode on the specific USB-C port you plan to use.
- Display input: A USB-C monitor can connect directly if it supports USB-C video. A monitor with DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, or VGA input needs an adapter suited to that input.
- Cable or adapter: Confirm that it supports video and the performance your display needs. A connector match alone does not establish video capability.
- Display requirements: Check resolution, refresh rate, color and HDR needs, and whether Display Stream Compression (DSC) is involved.
- Lane allocation and USB data: The setup’s video bandwidth can depend on whether the connection also carries SuperSpeed USB data.
- Dock and multiple monitors: Check the host and dock specifications, including support for Multi-Stream Transport (MST) when relevant. Display count and performance depend on the complete setup.
How do I connect a USB-C laptop to an HDMI monitor?
- Look up the laptop’s specifications for the USB-C port and confirm that it supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. Do not infer video support from the port’s shape.
- Check that the monitor has an HDMI input and note the resolution and refresh rate you want to use.
- Choose a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable that supports video and the display’s requirements. The adapter changes the connection to HDMI; it cannot add video output if the laptop’s port lacks Alt Mode.
- Connect the adapter or cable to the laptop and monitor, select the HDMI input on the monitor, and set the display arrangement and output mode in the laptop’s display settings.
- If the screen stays blank, confirm the source port’s video support, try a video-capable cable or adapter, and check that the monitor is set to the connected HDMI input.
What do bandwidth and power figures actually promise?
Published limits describe standard capabilities, not a universal result for a particular setup. The host, cable, dock, monitor, DisplayPort generation, lane allocation, and compression support all affect achievable resolution, refresh rate, data, and power.

VESA’s 2016 compliance-test announcement described a USB-C cable carrying DisplayPort audio and video, SuperSpeed USB data, and up to 100 watts of power. That is a dated description of the standard’s capabilities, not a promise that an arbitrary host, cable, or display supplies or accepts 100 watts. VESA’s announcement provides that context.

How is Alt Mode different from USB4 or Thunderbolt display output?
DisplayPort Alt Mode carries DisplayPort signals through USB-C Alternate Mode. USB4 or Thunderbolt can also deliver display output by tunneling DisplayPort, which is a separate path. A product may support one path without that fact establishing support for the other, so check its specifications for the exact feature you need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I verify a cable or device?
Check the host’s technical specifications for DisplayPort Alt Mode on the relevant port, then confirm the cable, adapter, dock, and display each support the required connection and performance. VESA’s certified-components listing includes USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode cables; certification of a cable does not establish that the host or display supports the rest of the setup.
