USB-C chargers do not have a universal rule that divides their advertised wattage evenly. USB Power Delivery (USB PD) negotiates the power each connected device requests, while the charger’s internal design decides whether ports have independent capacity or share a limited pool. The exact output is therefore model-specific: a charger may give one port priority, reserve a fixed amount for each port, or redistribute a documented budget when several ports are occupied.

To know what your devices will receive, identify the exact charger model and read its simultaneous-output table. A port rated for 100W by itself may provide considerably less when another port is in use.

Does a USB-C charger split power evenly?

No. Equal splitting is only one possible policy, and it is not the default for all multiport chargers. USB PD provides the communication framework: the charger advertises power capabilities and each device (the sink) negotiates an appropriate level. The charger’s power architecture then applies its own limits across the occupied ports.

The USB Implementers Forum describes USB PD as a way to “optimize power management across multiple peripherals by allowing each device to take only the power it requires, and to get more power when required for a given application.” That arrangement is still constrained by the source’s design and the capabilities of the devices and cables. The USB-IF overview is available at USB Charger (USB Power Delivery).

Consequently, “100W charger” is not a statement that every connected port can deliver 100W, nor that two devices will receive 50W each. It normally describes a maximum under a particular one-port condition. The simultaneous values in the manufacturer’s table are the figures that matter.

How USB PD and the charger’s hardware work together

Negotiation sets a device-appropriate request

When you connect a USB-C device, the source and sink exchange their supported power profiles. A laptop might request a higher-power profile than a phone, while a watch or earbud case may need only a small amount. The charger can accept a request only if that profile is available on the selected port and within the remaining budget for its port group.

That negotiation does not dictate how a manufacturer must divide a multiport charger’s total capacity. Two products using the same USB PD standard can publish very different output combinations.

The power-management design sets the available budget

Inside the charger, ports may have separate conversion hardware, or several ports may draw from a common power stage. Firmware can also change the available profile when another port becomes active. The official output table exposes the result to the user; the headline total alone does not.

Assured-capacity and shared-capacity ports

USB-IF training material distinguishes two useful categories in its USB Type-C Multi-Port Chargers – Port Identification guidance:

Port type What it means What to expect when another port is used
Assured Capacity Port The port can provide its rated or labeled capacity independently of the other ports. Its stated capacity remains available, subject to the device, cable and negotiated profile.
Shared Capacity Port The port can provide up to its rating only from the capacity remaining in a defined group; the group’s limit is indicated to the user. Output can be reduced when another member of the group draws power.

A charger can combine both approaches. For example, one USB-C port may have an assured higher-power path while two lower-power ports share a pool. Some models use a fixed priority order; others publish several combinations. There is no safe way to infer the policy from the number of ports or from the charger’s total wattage.

Why an uneven split can be intentional

Power is not always divided equally because connected devices have different requirements. Giving a laptop most of the available capacity while reserving a small amount for a watch can be more useful than forcing both devices to receive the same number of watts. A manufacturer may also protect a high-power port by assigning it a fixed ceiling whenever a second port is occupied.

USB PD’s job is to negotiate a valid operating point, not to promise a particular fairness algorithm. The same pair of devices can therefore receive different outputs from two chargers, even when both chargers advertise the same total wattage.

Published example: Apple’s 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter

Apple states that its 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter automatically distributes power between two connected devices according to their power requirements. Its support instructions at How to use the 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter give these examples:

Connected devices in Apple’s example Maximum shown for device 1 Maximum shown for device 2
Mac laptop and iPhone or iPad 17.5W 17.5W
iPhone and iPad 17.5W 17.5W
Mac laptop or iPhone and Apple Watch or AirPods 27.5W 7.5W

These are Apple’s stated examples for this 35W adapter, not a rule for other chargers. They show why “two ports” does not automatically mean a 50/50 split: the adapter assigns 27.5W and 7.5W in the Mac-or-iPhone-plus-wearable examples because the smaller device generally needs far less power.

Published example: a 100W charger with a 60W/40W dual-port mode

Anker’s 736 Charger (Nano II 100W) illustrates a different policy. Its specification page, 736 Charger (Nano II 100W) product description, lists either USB-C port at up to 100W when that port is used alone. When both USB-C ports are occupied, the table lists up to 60W on USB-C1 and 40W on USB-C2.

Port condition USB-C1 USB-C2
Only one USB-C port used Up to 100W Up to 100W
Both USB-C ports used Up to 60W Up to 40W

The two-port figures add to the charger’s 100W headline, but they are not equal. The same product documentation also lists combinations involving USB-A, so plugging a third device can select another mode. Always use the complete table for the exact model and occupied-port combination rather than extrapolating from the two USB-C figures.

How to find the output your charger will provide

  1. Read the exact model number. Look at the label, packaging or the charger’s regulatory marking. Product families often contain versions with different port layouts and output tables.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s specification or support page. Search for “output,” “power distribution,” “simultaneous output” or “port identification.” A page that lists only a headline wattage is incomplete for multi-device planning.
  3. Map the ports in use. Note whether the table distinguishes USB-C1 from USB-C2, a USB-A port, or a particular priority order. Port names and physical positions matter.
  4. Match the exact combination. Find the row for one USB-C port, both USB-C ports, USB-C plus USB-A, or all ports, as applicable. Use that row instead of adding each port’s single-device maximum.
  5. Check the device and cable limits. The charger can deliver no more than the device accepts, and a cable must support the negotiated mode. A lower-power cable or device can make an apparently generous charger look underpowered.
  6. Compare behavior with the documented mode. If a laptop slows after a phone is connected, check whether the table reduces the laptop port under that combination before treating the result as a fault.

What “100W,” “140W” or “240W” really tells you

A headline number is usually a maximum under specified conditions, often with a single port in use. It does not identify the simultaneous allocation, the voltage profile, or whether a second port causes a reduction. A product can legitimately advertise 100W and still specify 60W plus 40W in dual-port operation.

USB PD specifications support power levels up to 240W in relevant updated profiles. The USB-IF overview explains that 28V, 36V and 48V fixed-voltage options can support up to 140W, 180W and 240W respectively under those specifications. Those are capabilities of the standard, not a guarantee that a particular charger, cable or computer supports them. The source, sink and cable all need compatible ratings; see the USB-IF USB PD overview.

For source-side compliance terminology and test context, USB-IF publishes the USB Type-C and Power Delivery Source Power Requirements Test Specification. Compliance testing does not replace reading the consumer product’s own distribution table.

Why does my laptop charge slower when I plug in my phone?

The most common explanation is a documented shared-capacity mode. If the laptop’s port receives the charger’s highest output when used alone, connecting a phone may cause the charger to select a lower profile for the laptop and allocate the remainder to the phone. This is expected behavior when the manufacturer’s table describes that combination.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Check three things in order:

  • Whether the laptop’s USB-C port is the charger’s high-power port or a shared member of a group.
  • Whether the exact laptop-plus-phone combination has a lower listed output.
  • Whether the laptop, phone and cable can accept the profile you expect.

If the table promises the original output for that combination and the laptop still charges unusually slowly, then inspect the cable, connectors, heat, device settings and the charger for damage. Do not conclude that the charger is defective solely because its single-port maximum is not maintained with another device attached.

What if charging stops or restarts when I connect another device?

Some chargers may renegotiate when the port set changes, but the general behavior is not established for every model. Official specifications reviewed for this topic do not support a universal claim that the first device will always keep charging, always pause, or always switch ports when a second cable is inserted.

For a specific charger, look for manufacturer notes about power reallocation, port priority or a brief interruption. If no such note exists, test the exact combination with the manufacturer’s table beside you. A short change in charging status can be a power-profile transition; repeated dropouts under a documented supported load are more reason to inspect the cable, outlet, temperature and charger condition.

Buying or replacing a multiport USB-C charger

Question to answer Why it matters
What is the maximum from each port when used alone? It establishes the best-case ceiling, not the multi-device result.
What are the outputs for the combinations I will actually use? A laptop-plus-phone or laptop-plus-tablet row may be lower than the single-port figure.
Are the ports assured or shared capacity? Shared groups can reduce a port when another member draws power; assured ports are designed to retain their stated capacity.
Is there a stated priority order? Some chargers reserve more power for a particular port or change the allocation when USB-A is occupied.
Do the cable and devices support the required profile? The weakest component limits usable power, regardless of the charger’s headline number.
Does the documentation cover regional or hardware variants? Port layouts and output modes can differ between versions sold under a similar product name.

For a laptop that must maintain high charging speed while a phone or tablet is connected, choose a model whose official simultaneous-output row explicitly reserves enough power for the laptop. If your second device is a watch or earbud case, an uneven allocation may be entirely adequate and can leave more capacity for the computer.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

  • Record the charger’s exact model and the port labels.
  • Write down every connected device and cable type.
  • Find the manufacturer’s row for that precise port combination.
  • Compare the listed maximum with the device’s own input requirement.
  • Try a known-good cable rated for the required USB PD level.
  • Check whether removing one device restores the expected charging rate.
  • If behavior conflicts with a documented supported mode, test another outlet and inspect for heat, dirt or physical damage before replacing the charger.

This process separates normal shared-capacity behavior from a genuine fault. It also avoids a common mistake: treating the sum of single-port maxima as a promise that the charger can deliver that sum simultaneously.

The key rule to remember

USB PD negotiates what each device can use, but the charger model determines how much power is available to negotiate on each port at the same time. Read the exact simultaneous-output table, identify shared versus assured capacity, and verify the device and cable ratings. Once those three pieces match, a slower laptop or an unequal split is usually an explained operating mode rather than a mystery.
